As a firefighter I'll say this. Yes the training is unbelievably hard. Yes the actual job is incredibly hard. But we dont get much recognition for it especially the volunteers they litterally do what these guys do but they do it with a normal job and sacrifice their free time to do this. The mental part of this is the real difficult part. Seeing dead mutilated children, losing a cpr patient, dragging people out of a burning building and so many other things. So everytime you see a firetruck or even hear a siren just say a prayer.

@@faithmauga3675 I'm in the middle of Fire academy right now. I went in with no previous experience in Fire or EMS and I will say right off the bat that it will be a lot easier if you try to get some experience first. Either as a volunteer FF or by getting your EMT card. It also can't hurt to buy some books and start reading in preparation. Academy is a very academic intensive environment and you're going to be hit with A LOT of information very quickly. If you go in having even just a little experience it will make it easier to adapt because you will have seen some of it before. If you're out of shape then you definitely need to work on that before applying. You're going to be tired as Hell just from doing the skills training, plus lack of sleep, and then adding daily PT on top of it. But most importantly, have a good attitude. Take responsibility if you fuck up, because instructors hate hearing recruits making excuses. Accept that you're going to get yelled at even if you technically didn't do anything wrong (this is especially true in the earliest stages of academy). If you get in you're going to be working with a lot of different characters, personality types, and people from different backgrounds. Just don't be "that guy" who pisses everyone off. I'm still in academy, so I'm not a full fledged firefighter yet, but if you have any other questions specific to the academy or anything then I'd be glad to answer them.

It is the worst, when working bad cases you try to dissociate the humanity from the biological organism. The mothers scream binds the humanity to the organism and can be/is very painful. The STEM shooting didn't have as many causalities as expected specifically because of those that responded to the scene. My little brother texted my dad at the time the first bullet was shot, and my dad was there in 5 minutes. He said by the time he got there, there were already cops and firefighters at the scene and in the school. They saved my little brother along with so many others in that school.

watching michelle be so torn about not being able to save the victim at the end, not being able to breathe, everything being so heavy, so hot, so tiring, and so mentally taxing; it brought me to tears. her question, "why do you do this?" and the answer "we're helping people", hearing that was so emotional for me, as i'm sure it was for her too. she killed this. and giving the public insight to everything that goes on behind the scenes, it's invaluable.

I've always said the three careers that I'll always have immense respect for are (of no particular order) firefighter, EMT and garbage/sewer cleaner one trained themselves to go against their survival instinct just so they'd willingly brace fire that can reaches up to a thousand degrees to save people one trained to save and preserve people while also having the burden of transportation, time and distance from any care facility, making due with whatever they have on hand one that do the dirty and often thankless jobs that no one else would so our living space wouldn't be filled with filth

It was a mistake on the trainers part, they should have given her the save. First responders become callus to death, death is the reality they face daily. She has not built up a immunity to death. The training mirrors reality and can trick your senses, she was physically and emotionally vested into saving the person. A save would have released her vested interest and allowed her to progress. I am afraid she may carry this subconsciously to the negative. They need to call her back for a save. Hopefully they debriefed her with a licensed professional. B. Schroedel Ret. Battalion Chief

I went a 10 day training as a fire responder and that word is the most heartbreaking you could actually hear, especially when we have a mock where the person is unconscious and we have to get him or her out and our instructors said 'that person you may be carrying is dead' shock is an understatement...

Aria Galvez some of us don’t even do it for money. We do it because we think our communities and society is worth saving. It’s almost our calling. It’s in our blood. We love helping people and we love the adrenaline rush as well. Not ever about the money. In my department, nobody is paid for being a member there. We all know the struggles. Those of us who have stuck to it know it’s our destiny. We also depend on the community as well. We have all sorts of fundraisers during the year. We just had our pancake breakfast 2 weeks ago. We have a fair as well. Our head chief is a retired firefighter from Ithaca NY. He had prostate cancer and beat it. If we die in the line of duty, we know we did it in an effort to save lives. We put others before ourselves. There’s a unique calling we all know and that’s what drives us to help people.

In Nova Scotia, Canada our rural area communities (which is the majority of the province) are protected by all VOLUNTEER firefighters! Each member is required to take the adequate training on their own time, without payment. My husband has been a firefighter & medical first responder for over 20 years!!! He is dedicated to helping his community, my hero!! ❤️

I am the mother of a firefighter . I was almost finished watching this and I heard the sirens coming.....3 fire trucks speeding by my house. One of them blew the horn as it passed by, my sons way of saying hi mom ❤️. I felt my eyes tear up and I whispered be careful son. Until your video I had no idea of the amount of training they go through because they don’t always share . They don’t share with their families what they see , how bad they hurt etc. I have always been proud of him , he is one in a team of firefighters that put it on the line everyday......❤️

My mom was actually an emt and there was one point she went to a call for ems rescue and a baby had been playing with a bouncy ball and she did everything she could to save her (The baby) but the parents were so panicked that in the rescue truck the dad kept sticking his hands in the mouth of the baby and unfortunately the ball was too far down into the throat that the baby couldn't be saved and the day after the incident I heard from my teacher that the babies sister was in my grade and in my class that the baby head to be let go there was nothing my mom could do to save the baby and my mom felt terribly sorry for the family of the baby she also saved my sister from many allergic reaction where my sister could easily have died I thank her so much everyday for everything she does even the smallest things

I work EMS in a volunteer fire department right now. I'm too young to start fire 1 training yet but I literally can't wait. Fire fighting, EMS, and rescue operations is so fun and it's such a tight community to be a part of, it's almost like you're family. This video was so great to see, it gets the excitement and adrenaline up so high, I love it. The fire station you got to work in was actually really nice too, the ladder truck was super cool, they call those quints because it also has the ability to pump as well as have a ladder on top. My company has been talking about getting a new quint in the near future, I can't wait for that. This was a great video, God bless all of our fire fighter brothers and sisters out there. WOOOOOOO.

I did the job for 27 years. At 60 years old when I retired I injured myself in recruit class never said anything. I needed total joint replacement in a shoulder. Went thru my whole career with pain had the surgery after retirement. I was electrocuted 2 times in my career. Loved the job.

Roo32 you just have to be able to control it. It’s okay to react how she does from stories, and it’s a good thing. But you can’t do the job if it affects you during the job. Some people can be very empathetic while also turning it off and focusing on the job in the right circumstances. That said, a very empathetic person might have more difficulty with emotional and mental consequences from a job like this, but that is just my speculation

I have been a Volly for almost 9 years and I remember hearing about that burnover the same day and getting the details of those young men that were lost and the one survivor that was critically burned. Storytime from someone you don't know: Me. When I was around 3 years old, my grandparents bought a children's playset for my cousins and I. A year or so later, I stood up on the slide, lost my balance, and fell backward. My neck broke my fall. My grandparents and dad were freaking out, calling 911, telling me to stay still for fear that I could cause more damage if I moved. No one knew what happened when I fell. Spoiler alert: nothing serious came of it, and I count myself lucky every day for that, amongst many other things. Anyway, the first people to arrive were firefighters. They managed to keep my grandparents and dad calm in their moment of terror, and they also kept *me* calm. There was one firefighter in particular, a man who was easily 20 years older than my dad at that point, who knelt beside me and talked to me like I was his daughter. I can't remember what they did or how they took care of me. My dad tells me that I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance, but I can't even remember that. All I can remember from that day was falling and that firefighter who made me feel safe when no one else could. After that incident, my life moved on, but I had a new dream: I wanted to be a firefighter. Firetrucks became a beacon of hope in my life because it was suddenly the steed that my hero rode in on to rescue me when I fell. I saw firefighters as heroes who changed into their "costumes" in firehouses instead of phone booths. On fire safety day in elementary school, I woke up excited and begged to go to school, even if I wasn't feeling well. As I grew up, I lost touch with my dream of becoming a firefighter. I still admired them, but I deemed myself too cowardly in the face of danger. Every "what if?" turned into a certainty in my mind, even though I had overcome many of my fears throughout my life. I let my fears and insecurities dictate my future, but I found another path that lined up with my desire to help and give back. Today, while watching this, I'm brought back to that childhood dream of becoming a firefighter, of helping people, of earning the kindness that was shown to me after I fell. There are days when I still ask myself: is this a life my firefighter would be proud of? Maybe it sounds ridiculous, and maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, but he felt like my guardian angel that day. I'm so happy this video was made because I felt my inner-child burst to life once more, and she still wants to be a firefighter. I have such a deep appreciation for firefighters, especially, and this video can educate people that firefighters are so much more than heroes who fight fires. I thank them all for their selflessness and service to their communities, and that gratefulness extends to every firefighter and first responder.

Jessi D. Never be afraid to go for your dreams. When there’s fear in you and your in a burning building, run right towards it. That’s what we have to do. It sucks when we have to pull out dead bodies but sadly we have to. I have a story in particular. This wasn’t a call I was on, but it was a call my department ran. September 3rd 2016. Main Street Homer NY. 3 story building with an elderly man on the 2nd floor. The owners were making meth on the first floor and it blew up and killed the elderly man. It was so powerful it shattered the windows of the bank. A ton of firefighters took the call. Took 5 departments including mine to put it out and it took 4 ladder trucks to put it out. Once we had it out we had to use our ladder to pull the body of the elderly man out. It was a big fire. Struck 2 alarms and that’s all we needed to knock it out. When I was 10, I wanted to be a writer, and when I was 16, I felt the spark to become a teacher; I've been pursuing that since, even though some of schooling has come at a slow and steady pace. We all have our own calling, and as long as that calling makes you happy and feel fulfilled-and doesn't hurt anyone-then it's the right one for you. I don't think everyone needs to feel it early in their life-maybe they find it at 10, maybe they find it much further down the line. Everyone's inner child is still within them, you just have to listen closely because the world can be loud. Thanks for making it through that rant :)

I’m a firefighter with a big anxiety problem. I knew it was what I was meant to do when I went into a burning building for the first time and a wave washed over me, i was as calm as if I was falling asleep. It’s an experience like no other.
