Honestly, I think being an Idol isn’t what it is all hyped up to be and I can tell Michi can see that too. You can still be a talented singer and not be an idol. From what I’ve seen of the communities, I think it’s better to have a smaller fan community that sees you as a human being and respects you as such than having a big Idol community that might have a few bad eggs that can ruin the dream for you. I think Michi’s got a good thing going where she is now. 😄

idols imo are more culturally niche than people might realize, the trend these days (at least in the West online) is towards influencers who are more open about their "imperfections" in a relatable way. In recent history, idol culture has had a lot of success in Japan, but not everyone has the kind of social expectations that make idols so suited to that culture so in a broader marketplace it's not necessarily the best strategy anyway
@joshthefunkdoc7 ай бұрын
@@sugarqbs There's actually an interesting conversation in recent years on how even in Japan idols may not QUITE have been what we thought they were in terms of cultural dominance. To be more specific, Japan was much slower than other countries to use streaming numbers for their music charts...because the big idol groups mainly relied on CD sales, so the industry was biased in their favor. Once they finally took streaming into account, AKB48 instantly fell off HARD on those charts while you suddenly started seeing a whole lot more K-Pop.

That stuff about people figuring out your location is really creepy, and you'd be surprised how little info people need to do that stuff. One guy I follow on KZbin mentioned that one time he posted a photo out of his window. He said there was just a tree there, nothing that really stood out. But within a day or two, people had pinpointed his EXACT location, with just a photo of a tree. Pretty scary if you ask me. So yeah, I totally get why Michi and many others try to keep things secret. People can figure out a lot of very specific details from the smallest amount of info, and if weirdos get that information, things can get scary.

a bit political take here but- FYI there`s a shitty govt rule revision going on where possibly our cencorship department will go to digital which means everything might need to go through them first. This is the same department who make tv station blur Sandy bikini from spongebob and Blur cow`s titty. It`s not happening yet, not in 9 days at least but if this happens and the worst happens i fear it`ll be hard for Michi being Michi. it might a bit exaggerated for me to say this but remembering this govt just hard for me to not worrying

She seems to have a very narrow view of what a vtuber idol has to be. It's fine if she doesn't want to be part of the culture but it's super easy to contradict her definitions just looking at Hololive.
@joshthefunkdoc7 ай бұрын
@@somedudewatchintv5297 tbf i think another part of it is, "vtuber idols" (even the ones who don't want this) tend to attract a significant incel audience that will absolutely try to cancel them if they have any actual opinions or collab with men. Remember how much shit Mori got from the community for being buddies with Trash Taste, or Kronii for putting her foot down re: streaming with Holostars? Sure, you can say they survived that just fine in the long run, but can you blame anyone for not wanting to go through with that? Look at the clip of Buffpup talking about how many people she's slept with, then look at all the comments of people calling her a whore and/or treating her as damaged goods because of that; those are the folks you WILL attract as your fans if you conduct yourself as an "idol" in this space.
@somedudewatchintv52977 ай бұрын
@joshthefunkdoc maybe I just haven't seen enough, but HoloID fans seem to be fine with male interactions, so it's not impossible. I think if she set clear boundaries, the incels would fall away, leaving the people she actually wants around.

She wants to be seperate from idols because doxxing/stalking an idol is normalized. When a person doxxes a streamer it's fucked up, but there's a disturbing number of people repeatedly doxxing/stalking their oshi just to make sure they're still "pure".

To add to my other comments, there's also this pressure not to talk about your problems if you're an "idol". Look at Korone's most recent original song where she straight up says she doesn't do that in the lyrics; that's very much at odds with where Western culture has gone in recent years, i.e. being more open about mental health issues. Perhaps Michi is closer to Enna in spirit here.
