I totally agree. Like you, I'm a Buckeye's fan, but regularly follow this podcast/channel. Steve tells it like it is. As for this episode, I agree with Steve and his guests. The Michigan program is in a bad spot. They have lost their elite status and that is hard to get back. I tend to think it is Harbaugh's fault, but I can also say that he has delivered a better winning percentage than Lloyd Carr. It's just that he can't win the big games. Your recruiting classes are usually in the top ten, so I tend to think that it has to be a player development issue. They can't turn raw talent into winners. Don't ask me how to do that unless it is hiring better assistant coaches to make sure players get better honed to play.

Appreciate your input and insight as always, Steve Deace. Kudos and respect for being here when I know it is extremely difficult. I survived the Cooper years. I relish the intensity of football games brought to us by Woody VS. Bo. They were awesome and embodied the meaning of rivalry. As a Freshman at TOSU, the upper classman in our dorm made us learn the Alma Mater and fight songs before going to a game at The Shoe. They had saved them from prior programs. It was fantastic!! Our respective School's traditions matter, the Rivalry matters, and we need to sustain that, like those before us did. If we lose that, what will our excuse be?? Keep up the great work! Asking the tough questions is the hardest part and you do a great job. Other takes on this issue don't go this deep and don't really look at all the variables, but they don't have a stake in it like you do. Even without clear answers, your podcast is thought provoking.

Urban in his first year in Columbus? Undefeated. Jim Tressel's first year? Promised Ohio 364 days before his first game in Michigan that they will be proud of the Buckeyes on the field in Ann Arbor. Your questions logically build to the (painfully obvious) conclusion that Coach Harbaugh should walk away, if he truly loves Michigan University. Both your colleagues gave thoughtful, insightful, clear answers. And look: I spelled this whole post correctly!

Fifth...idk they need to make wholesale changes to beat the buckeyes. I didn’t think there was that much of a talent gap but there is, but the coaching talent gap is bigger and more concerning. Michigan just doesn’t want to win as bad as OSU. Plain and simple.
@jimbeaux895 жыл бұрын
Garett Smith I think it’s player development honestly. Just my opinion. Also defense. I definitely don’t think much of Don Brown. But as steve said, y’all just haven’t been producing talent. Y’all get pretty good talent, but they don’t grow. Have a great week man

Another Buckeye here; I don't "hate" Michigan, but I do root exclusively for the Buckeyes as I live just outside the 270 outer belt and have been a Buckeye fan for decades. Regardless, this is one of the best Podcasts I've ever watched and applaud you for your reviews in this video. Some of the things you talked about I already knew, but several were new, and it was very informative and enlightening at the same time. Many schools, including Ohio State from time to time, look at blaming someone else for their woes instead of fixing the problems. Coach Harbaugh has done a lot to bring the xIchigan team along, but it's painfully obvious they still need to work on the offensive and defensive issues that continue to plague the end scores. Thank you for the first honest review I've seen on anyone's home team in a very long time. Wishing you and yours Happy Holidays!

Steve, your production and content may be second to none. This from a Buckeye fan. My observations from Saturday...1. Untying Dobbins’ shoe is desperate and bush league. Were those 15 yards worth it? 2. McGrone should have been ejected from the game. Late hit out of bounds called, but after Fields reemerged from the tent, McGrone took 3 steps before hitting Fields on the touchdown throw. 3. Watch the film, Young was held and molested. I am not giving the scheme credit for its effectiveness when it should have been penalized. 4. UM’s elite receivers have not been developed...or they are weak. Lastly, as in the Army and Wisconsin games, that team shows no heart when the game gets tough. I lived through the Cooper years and the heartbreak. UM may have been inferior but they didn’t play that way. I want the angst of competition but UM isn’t offering that anymore. Keep up the great work!

(most wins for Div 1 team in college football history) When OSU plays Michigan and prevails, we enjoy it immensely. Shea looked amazing in the first half... i was shocked, but it was short crossing routes and OSU was adjusting slowly and then shut him down completely. 10 yard dinks and dunks Shea can do! but otherwise he was not good all year.

You also need to realize OSU was literally being held every single play. XM Sat night has the college replay on and they were going OFF on it. They agreed that there was ZERO chance in the real-world Young had ZERO stats without something going on. These are by no means OSU guys, and they were playing the tape and reviewing it on air. 10 holding penalties in the 1st half alone, including 2 chop-blocks against Young were not called. Plays that could have ended his NFL career before it began. Totally bush-league bullshit. I watched it again last night, they were totally spot on. They said Day and his staff should send the tape in to the league and basically ask WTF. Lol
@massivefins25975 жыл бұрын
@@bgav8915 Yeah there was holding non stop. I think OSU started pushing it because the refs simply weren't calling holding at all.

Great podcast. As an OSU fan that still feels the pain of those losses to TTUN during the Cooper era, I can appreciate the truth you're speaking about the current state of UM's program right now. Cooper produced some of the most talented teams in OSU history but he failed, and refused, to elevate THE GAME in importance over any other game on the schedule. It took some very honest conversations in the OSU AD to decide beating TTUN and winning the B1G was the priority above all else that sealed Cooper's fate at OSU. Beat TTUN, win the B1G and everything else will take care of itself. I think there are two main reasons why this rivalry has been one-sided since 2004 and it's 1. OSU lives and breathes this rivalry thanks to the Cooper era. We're nearly 20 years removed from Cooper but those losses to TTUN in the 90's still haunt OSU fans to this day. 2. Coaching! Harbaugh's a great coach. I just threw up in my mouth a little typing that but it's true. This game was close for a while until OSU's coaches made some adjustments to their scheme on defense midway through the 2nd quarter and halftime. Sure, some silly penalties and dropped passes in the 2nd half helped sink TTUN's comeback but it was largely coaching making the right adjustments and coaching up 2nd / 3rd string players to perform when called upon to replace Wade and then Arnette. There is a talent gap but great coaching can overcome talent gaps....see the Iowa and Purdue losses the last 2 years for OSU. Dabo is doing great things at Clemson but do not forget he's been able to retain most of his coaching staff during this run, which is the primary reason they've remained elite. Bama and OSU replace key coaching positions almost yearly, yet somehow continue to be elite programs.

Also Michigan is a FIRST RATE academic university thanks to the money the auto industry brought, just because Ohio State isnt as good doesn't mean they don't care about academics. ..theres wayyy more regular students than football players. And UMs issues will never be a talent gap, Ann Arbor is beautiful school with a great tradition and will always land talent...many from OHIO...bastards. Appreciate your practical and heads up way of looking at things.

It’s pretty simple and I think it was covered in this. Harbaugh is a “Michigan Man.” To the powers to be that means he is a cut above the fray of the lowly “football factories” as is the entire University. He does things the “right way”, which means no scandals, no gray areas and certainly no cheating. He takes the “fellows”on lovely trips to Europe and such. This football thing is all well and good, but there is, after all, so much more to life He doesn’t stoop to the lowly level of the media and respond to their insults or silly questions.they are nobodies who for some reason think beating Ohio State and winning championships is somehow important.Instead he shows his disdain by repeating the same answers after every loss. (They still haven’t caught on that he is belittling them). He’s doing exactly what his bosses want and there is absolutely nothing wrong in that. That is unless, the alumni and fan base stop filling the stadium, sending the checks and all that stuff. I’m thinkin’ that ain’t gonna’ happen. It’s not the same era as when Bo or Lloyd were there.

As an OSU fan living through the John Cooper years, I can sympathize with the UM fans recent pain/frustration. I just can’t figure out why Michigan cannot find a quarterback or stud tailback. And how in the world do they not have a defensive tackle that is 300 pounds? It has to be as simple as recruiting/development, which should be fixable. Not sure if it is fixable with Harbaugh. Hang in there, UM fans. Michigan really is a fantastic school..

Steve, wonderful podcast. Thank you. As a Michigan Fan here living in the Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti area; despite the Ohio State misery i do like where the program is going. I think we need to be patient and allow for things to play out. Bringing in Josh Gattis was a huge step. Sure Gattis is a great mind, but we have had i think 3 to 4 different offenses in the Harbuagh era. As far as Don Brown is concerned, good coach and great defensive mind. However, hopefully he learns from this and doesn't play 3 defensive ends against Ohio state on 1st and 2nd down. These guys were getting pushed around. Once he brought in Hinton, there was a clear difference in the interior, but it was to late. Hopefully Mazi Smith and Hinton get their shot at the interior next year with a full year of strength and conditioning with the program. Love this team, i think we are headed in the right direction. Could be wrong though. Thanks again.
