Wow! I’ve been to 2 podiatrists the first one thanked me for wasting his time. (I did tell him surgery wasn’t an option). He made me feel like a freak when I wasn’t aware of what Cavus was and made me feel deformed. Got up and left. The second one told me absolutely no way he would do surgery on me. Thank you for the share

I had no idea CMF is genetic! My sister who passed away last year, unfortunately, had severe Type 2 Diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. She had very high arches (didn’t know that was a characteristic) and was diagnosed with CMF. I assumed it was a comorbidity of Type 2 Diabetes. Thankfully, she had no pain whatsoever in her feet and ankles…completely numb (maybe not totally a good thing). As for other family members…we have a large extended family on my mother’s side…seven aunts and uncles snd 20 first cousins, but my sister is the only relative I’m aware of with CMT. Thank you for your invaluable educational videos!

For sure this is something that is probably much more common than the official diagnosis, but most people never get a true diagnosis with a neurologist as it does not get severe enough in my opinion.

Phenomenal video! I'm 31 years old and I was in a pedestrian hit and run a year ago, since that accident I've noticed a significant rapid progression in muscle loss in both my hands and feet. To the point that I can barely move either of my pinky and ring fingers. I've seen several Drs and can't get answers to why things have been progressing so fast all of a sudden. Is there anything I can do to stop it's rapid progression? Can a car accident that hit to my back cause such rapid progression?
@OverSizedSweaterFTWАй бұрын
Did you already have CMT before the accident? Cause from my personal experience and understanding, it’s not something you can contract from an accident or something like that. CMT is something we’re born with because of an abnormality in our genes.

Oh this is exciting! This is the next thing that i was going to talk to my rheumatologist and neurologist in my next appointment. I was just diagnosed with caveous foot and i have neuropathy and I am currently doing PT for both being able to lift my feet and for my legs and back. I went out on short term disability because i was not able to sit out before i started PT. Because i have Sjogrens this wasn't really checked. And i never had anyone mention the caveus foot until now. The EMG never showed much but my biopsy did. I say it's exciting because you said there may be treatments. Any kind of treatment is good because my sjogrens is progressing and that's hard. (I just got the don joy otc orthotic and it works great because i was falling CONSTANTLY)

@@DrTomBiernacki I appreciate seeing these videos. Even though I live in an area with great doctors sometimes this information takes a while to get around! And I promise I'm not trying to self diagnose, it's something I noticed after the orthopedic specialist I went to because I kept spraining my ankle a couple months ago diagnosed me with caveus foot. Sometimes you and your doctors get so focused on one thing and you don't think about other things

Does anyone know if this disease could be exasperated through outside conditions? I've been told by one Doctor that it can and that my Military Service is a factor in it. Any information would be a great help! I was diagnosed with CMT1A one year after my Military Service through a genetic test and an EMG.

SPECIFIC CONDITION REQUEST: I have had two hammertoe surgeries on my left second toe. Now, my toe “leans” too far to the left and is overlapping my third toe. It is in worse condition than before. The orthopedic surgeon simply wants to remove a wedge of bone from the upper segment so the upper section will be more straight. However, that will do nothing to correct the discomfort and strain at the base of my toe. My physical therapist friend said there are now PT techniques that can release a hammertoe. Any suggestions for re-straightening my toe?

Usually the referral for this would be with a neurologist for initial evaluation. You can ask your primary care doctor or specialist for a referral and nerve conduction studies can be done in the neurologists office.

Very interesting! Curious, and wonder if CMT disease can be a cause for bi-lateral carpal tunnel syndrome in some people?
@DrTomBiernacki7 ай бұрын
Usually it would probably not cause carpal tunnel which is more of a compression due to ergonomics, stress or even stiffness issues such as inflammation or high blood sugar.

CMT is specifically a genetic deterioration where the nerves cannot function properly.

The favorites I see now are Brooks ghost max or Hoka shoes for this foot type. The rockerbottom design can really help. I would recommend going to one of the shoe stores and try walking around in these and see if they help. Also a laceup ankle brace can make a big difference for ankle stability!
