Hi there, it’s refreshing to see a female talking about lenses. I’m in Film School and I’m using micro 4/3 for my own projects. Most of these channels are all men... nothing wrong with that! 😊 But it’s nice to see another point of view.

Great photographs explaining all the focal lengths . i'm a retired photographer using the epl6 as a try out and i am converted no more heavy gear , my first camera was an OM 1 . I am finding the 60 mm macro lens great and the 45 mm very sharp....... Leica like . I suppose the main thing is to buy equipment that makes money ... no point a lens hiding away in the camera bag !!! Camera wise the Haselblad SWC was a really marvelous camera back in the old film days . I enjoy most of your videos thank's for taking the time

You asked for lens suggestions, how about buying "the legend", known as the Panasonic 20mm f1.7. In English that is 40mm, almost spot on normal field of view, very sharp and a fast maximum f1.7. I hope that no one says a 50mm is. normal vision ! I also have the Panasonic 42.5mm f1.7, tiny and sharp enough to cut sheet metal ! Allowing for crop factor that is 85mm but I have sinned and switched the G7 digital zoom on at x4, that gives in effect 340mm, great results, but we are not meant to admit using digital in camera zooming !

Nice video, and great channel title! I'm an events photographer and use the f/2.8 zooms most, but my two best recommendations are the sigma 30mm f/1.4 as a tight normal or wide portrait, and my current fave is an adapted Minolta 57mm f/1.4 with a Zhongyi lens turbo ii. That combo works out as a 83mm f1.0 lens. Hubba.

I like the Olympus 25mm f1.8, but I've been running the 12-40mm f2.8 most often (I have an OMD EM1). I have also had a lot of fun with the 75-300mm at a zoo. Was great to zoom in on the animals

I have a bunch of m43 lenses, I have the lumix g x vario 12-35 f2.8 you have and used to have the 35-100 f2.8 but sold it after I bought the olympus 40-150mm. I don't have any ultrawide lenses so you are convincing me to get that oly 9-18mm because of it's size, also like that it has a filter thread. My suggestions for you would be the olympus 40-150 pro zoom, fantastic lens but it's big and you already have the panny 35-100 but honestly I prefer the olympus pro model. The extra reach is great plus you can focus so much closer than the panasonic so in my use it's more usable, you just have to get over the size but again it's fantastic! I'd also suggest you get the Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4, another fantastic lens. I have three panny leica lenses, that one, the 15mm and the 45mm macro.

I have been trying out vintage m42 lenses and can recommend the Helios 44 f2 (any version) (approx £30 - 60) and super takuma 55 f1.8 (approx £30- 60). The Helios can give beautiful arty swirly bokeh while the takuma has dreamy bokeh. To get the best in micro 4/3 you need a focal reducer. For that I recommend the pixco version. Reasonable price and can be shared between lenses

Hi! I have a question for you but first I would like to thank you so much for your wonderful, informative content and your delightfully fun personality that shines through in all of your videos. I've been binge watching your channel for the last several weeks. Ok my question is: In your opinion, should I buy the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 or the Olympus 25mm f1.8? I currently only have the original kit lens (14-42 f/crap) which I hate and don't use any more, and the Olympus 45mm f/1 8 which I LOVE. I've been using the 45mm walking about on vacation to get portraits, night shots of things farther away, and some other cool shots, including some narrower field landscape day shots even. Since I don't have a wider lens I like, I just shoot with my phone (pixel) if I need wider. I was quite happy with that setup on my last trip to Spain and Portugal. I purchased the 45mm on that trip and never went back to the kit lens after that. I love that 45mm! I'm torn between the cheaper and smaller Olympus 25mm f1.8 which I can get used for around $200 to $300 or spending about $500 used on the Lumix 12-35. I think the 25mm would be better for night street scenes but the zoom lens would be super versatile for walking around during the day, plus it's stabilized so maybe night shots wouldn't be too bad on it. What would be your recommendation? Thanks.

Hi! This is a good question, my favourite focal length is 25mm, especially for video, and I use my 25mm prime a lot. But I have to say the 12-35mm is just a great all rounder. Super versatile and at 2.8 it is fast-ish and very sharp. Possibly prioritise the stock lens first then you won't use your phone so much? Phone photography is great and surprisingly high quality but I'm sure your m43 would be a step up in quality, especially with the 2.8 stock 😊

@@MicroFourNerds Thank you. I think by prioririze stock lens, you mean you favor the 12-35mm? Or by stock lens, do you mean I should try to like my 14-42 kit lense that came with my camera?

If you can find one for a reasonable price the 45mm PanaLeica macro is fantastic. I've heard they're hit and miss tho so make sure you have the ability to return or get your money back if you get a bad one. I love it and it's relatively small. I enjoy macro so I keep it in my kit always.

Those lenses all look great! I'm making the switch to M4/3 from APS-C DSLRs soon and I'm edging towards the Olympus f/2.8 zooms. Don't seem very different to the Panasonic ones at medium and tele but they offer a brilliant 7-14 f/2.8 wide zoom that means it's similar to the full frame holy trinity in field of view and should match better as a set.

I would suggest the Super-Takumar 135mm f3.5 witch is so sharp and lovely boka. and the Rokkor 58mm f1.4. They are so nice and work so well with Panasonic IBIS. And they are very small and adorable.

Hi there - nice work with the channel & keep up the good work! I moved from Nikon to MFT when the first OM-D came out, and I took the opportunity to move away from zooms to an all-prime kit. Like you, I have (and enjoy using) the Oly 45mm f/1.8. But for portraiture, my go-to lens is the Oly 75mm f/1.8 which is one of the best lenses I've ever owned. You simply have to buy one. On the wider end, I have the first-gen Pany 20mm f/1.7, the Oly 12mm f2.0 and the Samyang/Rokinon 7.5mm f/3.5 fisheye. I own just one adapted lens, the Contax Zeiss Sonnar 135mm f/2.8, which works really well. All of the above I would recommend to you without hesitation but the Oly 75mm is stand-out and *must* be purchased!

Me again! I can totally recommend the Sigma 60mm f/2.8 in M43 fit. It's insanely sharp across the image from f/2.8 to f/8.0, and is a useful addition to the kit. I DID have the 19mm Sigma, but didn't really use it, so sold it, and have regretted it ever since. It's not a focal length you would have much use for, because your 12-35 zoom is probably close, performance wise. I have an old Nikon 50mm f/1.4 which I use with a zhongi speed booster, which gives me an effective 75mm f/1.0 in full frame terms. OK, the vignetting is pretty awful that wide open, and the corners could never be termed as sharp, but the effect can be unbelievable under the right conditions.

I have been playing with a Rokkor 250mm f5.6 adapted to M4/3. it works really well with both my GX80 and G80 and gives me 500mm in a really small package. The only thing it is an expensive lens at about 1200-1700usd for a 40 year old lens. I am considering selling it because I can't justify keeping it. But it is a fun lens with the donut bokeh that everyone else seems to hate but personally I love.

I've been back and forth about what lens to get next. I have the Lumix 25mm f1.7 (in for repair 😭) which is amazing and well worth the price, but like you I have the old 50mm olympus with adapter. Since the Lumix has gone off to Panasonic for repair I've given it another throw of the dice. I'm absolutely loving it, and have no issue with a bit of manual focusing. Which has made me think about Voigtlander lenses, as manual focus isn't such an issue (in fact it's quite fun). And having f0.95 I bet you is amazing. If anything I'd have a nose at them as they'll be totally different to anything else you've got!

Micro Four Nerds I just feel with any other lens you wouldn't get that much more out of it vs the ones you already have. For my Olympus OM 10, and Panasonic G7, I have the sigma art 19 mm 30mm and 60 mm. The finish on two of them is rather slick so I have to put a rubber band around the barrel to grab hold of it but I think they do an excellent job, fast focus clear results. I also have a rokinin 14 mm and a Meiki 6.5 fisheye. Are use an adapter for the Rokinon because I bought it for my canon SL one so now I can use it on those three cameras....focus peaking comes in handy. The 85 mm for canon with an adapter is also very nice with focus speaking on the Olympus or Panasonic. I also have several film lenses, one is a 50 mm 1.4 MD lens which is pretty cool And a Canon 50 mm film lens. I could not find the 12 to 35 that you mentioned, but I’m quite sure it would be out of my price range anyway. Enjoy your videos...ty

I ended up getting one of the 40-150mm Olympus lenses when they were relatively new for just a bit over $100US. It IS a surprisingly sharp lens. I don't use it much, though, but if I need to 'reach out there', it's great for such an inexpensive lens. For Olympus cameras (I use an OM-D EM-5, and just got an EM-5 mkII), the Panasonic lenses will work but the Olympus lenses are probably more 'appropriate'. The in body image stabilization in the OM-D line is awesome. My "baby" lens, the one I'd grab if the house were on fire, is the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8. I had the Pana 12-35 f/2.8, but traded with a guy for the Oly lens since he had a Pana body and could benefit from the IS in the lens. Phenomenal lens. My camera wears that one 95% of the time, although since I'm getting into video with the EM-5 MkII, that may decrease quite a bit. I'll use a lighter, smaller lens, like the 14-42mm pancake.

I absolutely agree with your sentiments regarding the 12-35mm (and 35-100 which I also own) It's a corker. I bought one early on and the only real downside was that it spoiled my appreciation of some of my other lenses for me. The Oly 9-18 which I used to own suddenly looked a little soft where it had been superior to all the wide-tele kit zooms). After I had the 12-35 2.8 I also sold my wider angle primes (the 12mm and 17mm) because they were no better than the 12-35 and I don't find that an encumbrance to carry. I also sold the 9-18. I replaced it with a Panasonic 7-14 which although more expensive is really no sharper than the 9-18. I've just ordered a new Pana-Leica 8-18, which I hope will be a keeper. In addition, I have a Samyang 7.5mm f3.5 fisheye. Cheap and very very sharp, if of limited use. A Panasonic 25mm 1.4 - killer sharp, ace group portrait lens. The Panasonic Leica 42.5 1.2 - amazing sharp as well as fast. Good for low light concert pics etc. The Oly 75mm 1.8 - similar ultimate quality to the Leica 42.5 and smaller, but no IS is a compromise (I find that lens IS is usually better than body IS over 50mm). I also have the Panasonic 100-300 4-5.6. Not in the same league as the shorter zooms (particularly over 200mm) but small for what it does. the Finally the Panasonic 14-140 f3.5-5.6 which I keep on an old Panasonic G5. I'd take it places (like out on the piss) I wouldn't take my really expensive stuff. It's much better than it should be for it's versatility, and certainly better than the kit Oly zooms I started out with.

Hi ! just discovered your channel, love the passion for photography you have. First, I'd say that with the P25/1.7, you can't really be wrong for the money it costs. It's very consistent across the frame, and it's at its sharpest already at f/2. It's a type of lens with a kind of retro feeling and it reminds me of the 40/1.7 of the Canonet New QL 17 from the 70s. We're not used anymore to that very even kind of sharpness, corner to corner. And it's silent and extremely fast focusing for video, which is a huge plus. On the minus side, the out-of-focus background can sometimes feel harsh. Second, although it's not a concern for you considering the range of lenses you have, I just wanted to add for people who are primarily shooting primes not to dismiss the Olympus 12-50 kit zoom from the E-M1 and E-M5. When you want to be lazy on holidays, or when you want to try something new without buying exotic gear first, consider this : while the lens is not the sharpest by any means, nor the fastest (by far), it starts at 12 mil, it ends at 50, it's got power zoom *and* manual zoom, it's got manual focus (by wire) and a blazingly fast AF, it's all internal so it doesn't trombone and the front lens doesn't rotate, it does a kind of macro, it's weather sealed, and you can get it for the price of a fancy meal, which is still kinda cheap. Top buy, just in case, because it crosses an awful lot of boxes by itself. Drawback, it's a long lens, and it looks ugly.

Have you fallen down the M42 rabbit hole yet? The Pentax Takumar primes are sweeeeeet. The only problem with the Super-Tak fifties is the yellow cast from the thoriated rear element in some of them, but that can be reversed with a UV lamp or compensated in post. When I first bought into 4/3 I got the Olympus E-300 with two kit lenses, the Zuiko 14-45 f3.5-5.6 and the 40-150mm f3.5-5.6. Kit lenses were so sharp that I didn't feel the need to upgrade, ever. It really was outstanding glass for kit lenses. I'm sad to say that the m4/3 are not as good, but still good to use.They are lightweight and very useful. I find my m.Zuiko 40-150mm f4-5.6 is not really good on focusing in dim lighting, quite fast outdoors with bright sunlight, though. Optical quality is acceptable to good. For the money (cost me $80) and range can't really complaint about it. Since you shoot with a GH5. Stick with Panasonic lenses rather than Olympus, If you were shooting Olympus, I would recommend you stick with m.Zuiko glass rather than Lumix. Mounts are compatible, yes, but in camera software (chromatic aberration, distortion adjustments) only work with each brand's lenses. Good video, thanks!

I always look forward to your videos & thoroughly enjoy your presentations. I'm an avid Nikon "collector" (FE, D90, D500, D4) but I also own a M4/3 Oly Mk5 with a few lenses...and the Sony A6500 (lot of tech in this little body) and A7MkII (love this camera) a few Sony Primes & wonderful Rokinon/Samyang lenses. I've decided to thin my inventory--make room for more stuff...probably sell the M4/3 and Nikon D500/D4. If my house was afire and I had to grab one Camera/Lens... it would be the D4, D500, Sony, Oly and all the supporting lenses (smiles)! Aloha

I just got a sigma 30mm f1.4, super hyped about it! It's probably just as good as the PanaLeica 25mm f1.4 if not better, only larger, but much cheaper. You should also get a Lens Turbo for your OM lenses, though you will probably need to get a Canon EF to m4/3 one, then a OM to EF adapter ring. It will make your old lenses much more useful, especially for video. Cheers!

I'm surprised you don't have any pancake lenses. 14mm/f2.5, 17mm/f2.8, 12-32mm/f3.5-5.6. None are stellar but all are fine for walk about shooting. My 12-35 always sits in the drawer because the 12-32 is more than good enough. I bought a leaf cap (automatic) and hood on eBay for it so no faffing about with a lens cap. I would say the 12-32 on a Pen-F would be a nice combo. I use mine mainly as a 12mm/f3.5 and a 17mm/f4.1.

Nice selection of lenses and good examples, might do a video like this myself. My current lens selection is Samyang 7.5mm fisheye, Panasonic 12-60, Olympus 14-150, Olympus 17/1.8, Sigma 30/2.8, Panasonic 42.5/1.7, Sigma 60/2.8, Olympus 75/1.8 and Panasonic 100-300 Mk II. I've also got a very nice Olympus 50/1.4 from my film days and a Super Cosina 100-500mm which are great fun to use :). I'm thinking of selling a few lenses though like the Panasonic 12-60 and both Sigmas as they are to similar to my other lenses. We'll see though :) My favourite lens is definitely the 75/1.8 but don't use it as much as I should.

@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 6 жыл бұрын
Virtubella hi! I would suggest the wider lens for real estate. Usually those photos can be done on tripods so it won't matter if the lens is a little slower. I've used my Olympus 9-18 for venue/corporate shots and that focal length shows of the interior spaces really well! For a general lens the 12-35 is perfect 😊

Hi Emily, Firstly let me say how much I love your vlogs. They re so easy to watch and very informative. My Camera gear is G9 & Gx80 matched with Pana 25mm f1.4 Summilux and Pana 45mm f2.8 Macro. Having watched this vlog. I used to have a Sony a200 fitted with the Tamron 90mm Macro and loved the lens, I had contacted Tamron to see if I could use on m4/3 and they said no..... can you let me know what you have to do to adapt it and what I need. Keep up the good work. Andy
@MicroFourNerds
@MicroFourNerds 6 жыл бұрын
Andy Taylor hi! Yes there are two ways, a cheap way and an expensive way. You can buy a Sony a mount to m43 passive adapter on ebay or amazon. They're literally 10 quid. The downside is it effectively doubles the focal length of the lens and is full manual focus. It makes it a bit more unwieldy but you can get some awesome macro from it. The more expensive way is to buy a speedbooster/focal reducer, either a metabones adapter or a third party one like Candiox. This makes the focal length more true to the lens, but it will still be fully manual focus

Im a complete newb when it comes to photography and video. I'm travelling to south east asia december and im in the market for a good starter travel kit. Possibly g7 or g85 with kit lenses and maybe 1 or two extra lenses to start with. I mainly want to take landscape, street and some portraits and decent video of the trip. Which lenses would you reccomend? Also if i purchase the g7 i would have some spare change for extra lenses but i would have to sacrifice in body stabilization. Love your videos!

IAM NEMO hi!! I reckon a nice compact 17mm or 25mm prime for street photography - both are very sharp and relatively cheap. And maybe a standard stock lens, or an extra wide angled lens for landscapes. That would likely be either the 9-18mm Olympus or the Panasonic equivalent. Both are slightly pricy but brilliant. Hope you enjoy your trip and get some amazing photos!!

Tomas Hernandez two reasons: the built in image stabilisation that will work with my Panasonic bodies, and I happened upon an insane bargain! I found the 12-35mm ex display on an old gh3 for £399!! I sold the gh3 body only for £350-ish, so I sort of got the 12-35mm for £50! haha. I'd choose it again though, it really is very sharp, but the same can be said for the Olympus equivalent.

Great video! Never thought the olympus 9-18 was that good... I recently jumped in the m4/3 system with the gx7mark2 and the lenses I have are regular zoom lenses (12-32 f3.5-5.6 and 35-100 f4-5.6) and the 25mm f1.7 lumix prime. As long as there's enough lighting the 2 zoom lenses do actually pretty good! For the 25mm prime, it's a great budget lens. But when it comes to image quality, I guess the 20mm f1.7 is better even though everybody says the AF on that lens is bulls**t. I personally am thinking of selling my 12-32 and getting the 15mm prime lens for simple portraits and wide angle shots. I am not any professional just an amateur but thinking of getting the 12-60 leica one day.
