Thanks to all the eagle eyed viewers that spotted it wasn’t the localiser that was wonky but the aircraft's ability to accurately follow the localiser! Note how at 14:23 you can see LOC engage on the FMA shortly after selecting APP and making a turn to intercept the localiser, from then on in it didn’t do such a great job following it! The issue seems to be with the aircraft automation not wanting to follow the localiser. Notice from 17:09 how LOC and GP are both engaged and how the Autopilot and Magenta Flight Director are locked onto it despite the guidance on the localiser deviation scale fully deflected to the right. I have since learnt It’s a known issue and will be fixed in a patch. Unfortunately I failed to notice whilst recording and editing (I was too busy trying to take external shots on the approach for you to enjoy!) Cheers! FD2S

The plane needs to be kept in NAV mode along with APP mode the entire time. HDG and APP will not be enough to remain aligned. NAV mode will keep the alignment (as long as NAV is selected in the autopilot vs GPS) and APP will keep the glide slope.
@flightdeck2sim4 жыл бұрын
Oh really? Every aircraft I’ve ever flown where you use APP mode ensures both vertical (glide path) and lateral (localiser) are followed by the automation. At 14:23 you can see LOC engage (FMA LOC) after selecting APP and the aircraft turned to intercept the LOC and as the approach progresses the aircraft whilst still in LOC does not follow the localiser FD2S

Having played it back I’ve noticed it wasn’t so much the localiser that was wonky but the aircrafts ability to accurately follow the localiser! (At 24:23 you can see LOC engage after selecting APP but it didn’t do such a great job following it!) Having tested it by flying it manually the glide path and localiser information seems to all work well, the issue seems to be with the aircrafts automation struggling to follow the course deviation and stay on the localiser. Regrettably I was too busy trying to take external shots on the approach for you to enjoy and failed to notice! Cheers! FD2S

What's most amazing thing in this video to me? In almost every racing/flying/driving game, anything that has wheels on the ground (at least at some point) they almost never look like the tire is actually sitting on the ground supporting weight. There's either space between the wheel and ground or the bottom of the tire is below ground level. This, in contrast, actually looks like the tires are on the ground. Granted, it would be even better if there was water spray or at least some effect of the tire on the water, but I'm really pleased just to see what we have here!

Always found your flight sim videos enjoyable, professional and very informative. Great voice that even someone with poor English can understand (but speaking a little slower would help). You really helped me and many of my international friends around the world to fly the 737 zibo in x-plane. Now with FS2020 and its amazing graphics your videos will certainly always also be a true pleasure to watch. Thanks from me, and from my many flight simmers friends who want to switch to FS2020 for showing that this sim is not 'just a game' (as some blind x-plane fanboys claim) but a real flight simulator (with amazing graphics out-of-the-box) Showing that more often might even put a stop to the toxic, racist and sexist behaviour shown to foreigners by the devs who run the sim forum at x-plane.org since the announcement of this flight sim. Please make many more and concentrate on FS2020, your audience will then not only be potentially 1000+ times larger but also give you the opportunity of reaching viewers around the world. Perhaps you could work together with other content creator to have sub-title in different languages. Lastly, what about a video showing the caching of the downloaded graphics data. Can it be saved? e.g. for the same flight again on a later day?

I usually do the localizer capture by hand then let the autopilot maintain it, just because in my experience sim autopilots always struggle with that bit. Too many experiences with doing ILS approaches well below minimums (it's a sim, who cares) and having the autopilot put me down on a taxiway or neighboring highway lol. At least now that synthetic vision is included in vanilla it'll be really easy to tell when something's gone wrong.

Awesome video - very informative. First one I have found that really talks us all the way through some good turns, approach concepts, and joining the localizer. Have now recreated / flown this route a few times successfully thanks to you. Great stuff. Follow-up question: I *think* those are Jeppson charts you are using? They seem very clean yet full of great info. Looking for charts like this on airnav, flightsim, skyvector, etc and not finding anything as good. Conceptual question - the "approach" from 128° radial to TFS VOR over BAMEL, then the 10 mi arc to the localizer. I think you called (and showed) it KONBA 4G (I see that in the trip kit PDF along with KONBA 4H from the other direction). What is that concept of that route vs other routes on the way into an airport? I want to figure out how to find the same "routes" into other airports, for example KLAX. What would I search for? Approach procedures? Something else? Thanks again. Subscribed and anxiously awaiting future videos.

Lovely video as usual :) Just to make sure, did you mean that it was the localizer that was off center, or the automation onboard (ap) that had trouble staying on localizer? To me it looked like the localizer signal was spot on, and it was, in fact, centered up when you came over the threshold after making that correcting turn. The localizer needle was correctly showing a deflection off center because the ap wasn't following it.

Navigraph Charts. It is a monthly subscription service though

You had your course set to 073 but the runway course per the approach plate should have been 074. Your AP was working correctly; it was just following the course you had incorrectly entered, which resulted in you being left of the runway.

Interesting. Very different to how a 737 behaves. At 14:23 you can see LOC engage (FMA LOC) after selecting APP and the aircraft turned to intercept the localiser which only had a fixed course in one direction unlike a VOR. A degree should make no difference, the CDI deviation indicator will still show the deviation from the LOC . Microsoft have confirmed its a known bug with the automation systems on all their aircraft too. FD2S

Cap there is FLC (flight level change) on the right over there, now instead of throttle it will use pitch to keep speed so you still have to manage throttle but it does help especially in the climb so you don’t stall

Almost a Harrison Ford moment there boss 😂, sims visuals are great but the g1000 is a little off in terms of colours.. no biggie. Aircraft wise YD on when above 400ft ( it’s to the right of the AP button ) and instead of VS for climb if you press FLC you will maintain the indicated climb out speed and pitch will change to maintain this. Other than that 70knts over the numbers is a good figure. Nice flying though cap

Thanks Stuart! I still prefers a 1980’s Seneca II with steam gauges!

flightdeck2sim no school like the old school boss lol... the G1000 is something all my GA aircraft in the sim have so I’m more comfortable with that. However I do like using the airfoil labs c172 for keeping up with IFR cross country nav. The workload is higher but far more rewarding

Nice review. Very much looking forward to the release in the next weeks. I guess it will most likely take some time for fs2020 to be fully operational with the commercial jet flight systems.

Thank you Christer. I’ve tried the default Airbus and 747 and they’re fine for default but just a bit of fun! We’ll need to wait for someone like ZIBO or a good payware plane maker to come along 😊 FD2S

I was told by someone within the beta team that the AIRAC currently in use by the sim is not up to date. Is that true? I thought the airacs would be current in MSFS2020.

How the flight dynamics feels? From what I’ve seen so far it looks sensitive as hell, like most general aviation aircrafts in XP11 🤔

Not sure if it's just me but I like shooting approaches when I can't see the runway or any marking on the display unit. I think that adrenaline and the rush it lost when you see the runway in front of you. At least on the flight sim. In the real life world I would want all the visual cues I can have. lol

Haha, while I'm absolutely with you in terms of challenges and the adrenaline rush in the simulator, sometimes it can be a bit too much: The other day I took the trusty old B738 over the pond from Europe and had to make a fuel stop in Gander in the middle of the night. Sadly there was no ATIS, so I went uninformed, and for a regular Cat I ILS approach... 1000ft - stabilized, but not visual, grey wall... 500ft - not visual, grey wall - umm, getting nervous... 200ft/minimums - not visual, grey wall - should definitely be going around now. But darn, I'm sure there must be a runway here somewhere - continue... 100ft - not visual, grey wall - OMG... please no crash after 5 hours flying. Please... 50ft - not visual!! - anciety reaching peak: F**, f**, f**, f**... 40ft - boom: runway lights, just past the threshold, dead on centerline - 30.. 20... butter landing... Can i have a beer now, please :) Not very professional, I know ...and a little too much exitement for my taste :))) But very good fun in the end!

Handling is shocking eh? How much wobbling was there during your flare!?

Im not a real certified pilot but Ive been told by many who are that the number one rule is to fly the airplane and not let the airplane fly you no matter if your in AP mode or not.

very strange but the GP1000 in same plane in Xplane 11 has the same issue with the approach being misaligned with the runway. I believe it has to do with the fact that the Autopilot is still linked to the HDG Bug while it is set to APP. You can test this buy setting the APP then once you are on the glideslope change the HDG bug, if the plane changes direction when you move the HDG bug. You have to make sure your HDG bug matches the RWY heading when using the autopilot to fly a ILS glideslope. If the HDG is pointing slightly off it will be misaligned with the ILS by the number of degrees the HDG bug is off of the runway HDG.
@flightdeck2sim4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vinyl! That shouldn’t matter if you’re in APP/LOC. Check out my pinned comment, I quickly found out it’s a known issue 👍🏼
@olasek79724 жыл бұрын
Vinyl Rabbit nothing is “misaligned” here, it is autopilot being unable to hold the localized course. And NO, you don’t match aircraft heading to runway heading, this is not the way it is done in real life and would actually result in poor approach with any kind of crosswind.
@vinylrabbit72954 жыл бұрын
I am not that familiar with the GP1000 either, I just wanted to point out that in Xplane 11 I have the same exact issue with flying the app using the GP1000. So it would be strange that in two completely different sims simulating the GP1000 using the procedures you have there would be the exact same bug. I would guess that more then likely it's pilot error
@olasek79724 жыл бұрын
Vinyl Rabbit i don’t have XPlane but if you are flying this approach using HDG matching with the runway this is a BIG pilot error right from the start. The author here is an experienced pilot, he knows what he is doing. Please read some tutorial how to properly fly ILS approach.
@vinylrabbit72954 жыл бұрын
@@olasek7972 I was referring to the HDG alignment because if you change the HDG the AP will move with your changes, not that I was flying using HDG for the APP. Sorry that wasn't clear. The author admitted he has never used the GP1000 you shouldnt assume he is flying the app properly with it. Perhaps the author should take a few tutorials before he assumes its a bug.
