I'll never understand how any adult over the age of 25 would willfully use this and be surprised to find out years later that Microsoft was in fact harvesting data from it.

No way is this enough. Because we all know that eventually this feature will become required. It'll link to the cloud someday. Microsoft will say it's just for 'analytics' and you'll stay anonymous, but that won't last either. They're going to drip drip drip changes to it until it's possible to watch your PC live.

Kevin Beaumont has already created tools that ANY person with access to your machine could use to exfiltrate your entire Recall timeline. So, you download the wrong thing or view the wrong email and everything that you've done for the last few months is now available to a hacker. No need to install a keylogger and exfiltration tool and wait... No Microsoft has already done that part for the hacker. It's a good thing that this will now be off by default. Regardless, I am sure lots of people will turn it on and I'm sure some of them will suffer for this once their system is compromised.

Awesome, thank you Shane - just knowing I have to turn it on (which I wouldn't bother doing) makes a huge difference to an older user, lol. Have a great weekend.

Excellent update. Thank you. These new PC's look interesting!

It would be awesome if you were given one of these laptops to review so that you could test and demonstrate this feature.

This update is enough for me now. Because at the end of the day it's all about having that perfect mix of convenience, security, and privacy. And with this latest update I think they achieve that.

Apple just announced their version. Will be interesting to see the reception on socials from team Apple.

To me, this feels like a feature no one was asking for. Don't get me wrong I see the potential usefulness of this but, we've all gone this long without it and have been just fine. Personally, the few instances this may come in handy in no way make up for the potential security/privacy impact this could have (now, or in the future when they decide it should be a default option).

Most features or changes MS make in new Windows are not wanted/needed by users. The mere fact that most of these issues could be found out before release or while in development means they don't care about designing an OS for users. How many years we beg for a native classic xp/7 menu? It didn't even have to be a default just a option to enable. Instead we have to risk 3rd party one. W11 doesn't allow double row taskbar like W10 does. Why?

Wait, people with sense still use windows?

To me it still sounds like fancy system restore
@shanecraigtech6 ай бұрын
It's really not anything like system restore. It's more like your web browsers history, but for everything you do on your computer.

The change to make it an opt in feature also speaks to their confidence that people will eventually opt in once the scare mongering hype dies down.

Recall is a enhanced AI version of Windows Timeline. I'm glad it's coming back and not be forgotten.
@planofattack20796 ай бұрын
The encryption is less important than being off by default and using windows hello. The encryption will be defeated for the same reason as bit locker. Someone will get access to the PC remotely and open recall as the user. The safe way to use this feature is to have it turned off or only use it on computers that aren't used with critical information like passwords and bank account numbers etc. But I'm sure like other Microsoft security and privacy features it would have a habit of turning on magically without the user knowing. However, if it requires a specific login that should be prevented.

No bio metric for me thank you. Besides I don't want to turn my computer into a full blown bloat machine . If microsoft wants to impress me give me full control without having to hack everything.

This is an important change and should be well received. However most companies just talk about security. Security does not equal privacy. They can still profile and track without uploading any data. Linux is the only trustworthy OS.

It bothers me when ppl don't let companies innovate. Microsoft is always ahead of the curve and ppl slow them down just because they don't want change
@shanecraigtech6 ай бұрын
I get where you're coming from, but this was a place where Microsoft absolutely needed to slow down and fix some things before moving forward.
@mikldude93766 ай бұрын
Because they have come up with a new allegedly innovative feature does not mean it should not have scrutiny bud , lots of alleged cool innovations made by man over the years where later deemed to be a bad idea, some got canned , some it was impossible to put the genie back in the bottle and we still live with them today . Making sure an idea does not have holes in it is never bad.

I'm not dealing with Microsoft anymore, I have installed Linux Mint an all my computers and removed windows, they have burned us more than once. And that's enough. Doesn't matter if they turn it on or off. Sure no hackers, ya right, the biggest hacker in Microsoft !

Think it takes them every few seconds. I don't like where they are headed with this. I can only imagine what else is baked in we won't know about.

I mean.... "if a hacker has your computer and password" you are screwed anyway... your "recall" data is probably the last thing you should be worried about.
