Erm no, their both in ambient styles, in a major key and using stringed and synth instruments. You'll find music along these lines everywhere from sigur ros albums to persil adverts. Plus the ps3 sample has an orchestra tune-up mixed in within it which the vista one does not.

that piece of orchestra that plays on PS3s start up is not Sony 's original. If you have Sim City 3000, build a Sydney's Opera House landmark and examine that sound.

@JoeA320Pilot if you want to be technical, ps3 could also be considered an OS, since you don't have to install another OS to use it, and you can replace it with linux if you want to. also, it's "you're", not "your".

Well, the PS3 startup is based on an OPERA. Whenever an orchestra begins, they play that sound. It is extremely common. Sorry.

Microsoft has gained a habit of copying other companies. They take Apple's ideas and "change" them, they copied the iPod and created the Zune, they copied Sony's controller, and they've done much, much more. I'm not very fond of Microsoft. The worst thing about Microsoft is the lame Xbox 360.

@durin106 This song didn't come with Vista, so don't start when it first got out, it came for Vista Ultimate as an update after Playstation 3 was already out. So basically, your claim fails. Also, just because you own both consoles doesn't make you unable of being a fanboy for being biased for the other. Hopefully you're not one as you're claiming of not being. Also, PS3 got first released in November 2006, however March 2007 in Europe. But as said; Microsoft ripped off once again.
