Google say that they are hoping to support small developers with chromium but I'd say it has much more to do with avoiding anti-trust lawsuits. There has been a lot of talk about breaking up Google's near-monopoly on search and about their anti-competitive practices. Google making chromium open source makes it far harder for this conviction to get through given they are actively supporting their competition while also making that competition reliant on google for updates.

Open source has its upsides, but also pitfalls. It might seem scummy to throw out a competing browser standard and use your competitors' free of charge. But open source was how Google was able to surpass Windows and challenge iOS in the mobile phone race, but now the empire strikes back for the desktop. This is good for competition in the end, which will help us consumers!

I used to be a dev using Visual Studio to churn out embedded programs, and while I've moved on to a non-IT career, I've maintained and upgraded my Windows/Cloud knowledge to help my non-IT clients as a competitive advantage. During this time, I've bet on (and feedback on) all Microsoft products like TabletPC, Surface, Windows Phone, Office 365, Windows 3.1 to 11, IE, Edge (original & Chromium) and even Hololens. I still miss Live Tiles so I held on to my Windows Phone until Microsoft killed the platform. My main gaming PC is Windows 10 but with DirectStorage on Windows 10 in limbo, I may have to finally give up on Live Tiles. If Windows 11 (2H23) comes with AI built-in, that's when I may finally give in. I'm generally familiar with Linux but as a desktop replacement, it's a hot mess. And Windows 8 was great on tablets. Just saying.

I’ve been amazed with XBOX Game Pass as well. The first time I started using it, I immediately noticed the “Friends”-interface, interactivity and connectivity that I really enjoyed back in the days. Adding cross platform availability and great games (which don’t play them very long- but if I do, they offer in-game purchases as well. This is perfect). Also, Teams has played a huge part a while ago. Recently I came back and they implemented a lot more features but kept the interface and ease of use the same. Overall, I feel like Microsoft is sticking to certain features and design which consumers do appreciate. Even if these may be small and unnoticeable for a few. Yet, it feels refreshing. I’d love to see Microsoft is embracing new technologies as they are and trying to support them rather than taking them over. Also, my compliments for this video. I think it is intersting that both Microsoft and Intel both were digin those heights but then got decimated. Microsoft is a little ahead on the curve of crash and then rebound. In both situations they got a new guy to say "leave the ego behind and lets get back to our roots and focus on our core functions. Make those good and get people to like us again...then we will grow." Microsoft started the plummet and rebound much earlier but Intel looks to be heading in the same direction in the next several years, Hardware probably also just takes longer than software to make the turn around take affect. Both looked at IBM being a giant that fell and are attempting to learn from that. Very interesting to watch.

Edge is actually pretty good. The only thing keeping me from giving it a real go as a daily driver is debug capabilities. Which is an issue most people don't have. And even within debug, I already found a couple of things edge is better. Edge is actually good, but the reputation of IE keeps haunting it.

For Microsoft to promote Chrome and Google within their OS is a brilliant move. I have been a Windows fan and use PC's with the Microsoft operating system for years in a corporate networked environment, but after trying Edge and Bing I went back to Chrome and Google pretty quickly. In my opinion that's a great combination. Good work, MS!

Good take. But I do have to mention, that I still sorely miss windows phone. Sure, it was doomed to fail, asking every company to develop a third version of each app when the market was already divided between two established platforms was just unrealistic. But I remember buying this "throwaway" windows smart phone for less than a 100 e, that ran absolutely smoothly, had great battery management and looked much more interesting than the two competitors - which basically have been the same for all of their existence. I would've absolutely found uses for seamless computer/ phone integration. Apple would be in a perfect place for that, but for some damn reason insist having two operating systems. Not that I'd get on board with apple ecosystem, but still.

Microsoft under Nadella has become more like Oracle, Nadella realised how much of a juggernaut Microsoft already is, and consolidated the company's focus and primary market to the commercial sector rather than the consumer sector. Like he said in the video, even if they drop the consumer business Microsoft will still be worth more or less the same.

The only thing I wish they would stop is this rental software nonsense. I tend to use a Linux desktop because I know that I can configure it and even change aspects of how it works pretty fundamentally if I so wish. The thing about the rental element to products from Microsoft like windows, office, (and from Adobe, like their creative suite), is that it is still very proprietary and restrictive in how much about it one can change. Every time I use one of those types of product I get the unpleasant impression that I no longer OWN my own computer, and/or digital content. What I can do, whether I can even use it properly, and how it works or is configured, is restricted and locked down by the real "owner," namely the company to whom I must pay my monthly dues to enjoy the privilege of continuing to access my work - which is naturally often also stored and safely locked away from me in some proprietary file format. So personally, while I have nothing against Microsoft products, I wish they would similarly adopt the linux desktop operating system space, and stop with this nanny state attitude that windows so often exhibits, instead adopting the more flexible and relaxed approaches to standards found in unix based systems.

Xbox is a relatively small part of Microsoft but I've noticed how they've kinda evolved alongside the "new" Microsoft. Xbox basically doesn't do exclusives anymore. Virtually all Xbox games get a PC port & Microsoft generally is happy for those PC ports to release on Steam rather than trying to force you into the Windows Store. Minecraft continues to come out on competitors platforms & it seems likely future COD games will too. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if, in the future, Microsoft offered to make some of their other franchises cross platform in exchange for making Game Pass available on PlayStation & whatever the successor to the Switch ends up being. I could genuinely see Sony & Nintendo agreeing to such a deal if they got a cut of the royalties if it kept Diablo, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Doom, COD, Overwatch, Minecraft, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot & The Outer Worlds on their platform. I doubt we'd ever see Halo, Gears or Sea of Thieves titles getting ports but you never know.

Edge, which got released in 2015, was not based on Chromium up to 2020. Only then Microsoft gave on having an own HTML render engine, as any engine they ever created was a total mess, full of render and security flaws, not truly standard conform and slow on top of that. Instead they wanted to use Blink for HTML rendering and V8 for JavaScript... but then they realized, that when they do this, why not directly take Chromium and just wrap a customized UI on top, as that's even less work?
