Today I'm comparing a gadget that creates potato chips in the microwave vs a recipe found online that doesn't need any special device. The gadget took about 6 minutes total, while the recipe took about 10 minutes (prep and cook time).

Perhaps they should market this device as the “weight loss” version. The portions are tiny and you work so hard for them that it’s probably calorie neutral.

I think a standard kitchen mandolin and the recipe sounds like the way to go.

I think even if you use the microwave (I’m not all the way through the video yet), a standard mandolin is the way to go - even a box grater with a slicing side might suffice. Edit: it would also cut down on the cutting time even though the recipe involved additional steps.
@checkedcabbage2462

My first thought too. If the main issue with the gatget was the super jank slicer then just use a mandolin.
@prebenkul

I mean, the homemade chips would take you up to 15 minutes to play around with before their done. And let's face it, you will only get about 10 slices or so at a time. But if you get a few of the gadgets, you can prob get up to 5-10 times the amount you'd get from the normal way. Really, just use the recipe AND the device. Gives you better chips and cuts the time from 10-15 to 3-5.
@Bearded_Toy_Guy
@Bearded_Toy_Guy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah try a mandolin both ways and then see what's better. I think the crappy slicer is why you didn't like the fast version.
@ayekantspeylgud
@ayekantspeylgud 3 жыл бұрын
Sp3cial1st i agree with this too, except then it becomes a question of if you want to spend - $5? $10? $15 (I missed how much he said it cost) for a handful or two of homemade potato chips. I think for the number of times you’d actually want to put in the effort to make them, a mandolin and a DIY version of the device along with the recipe (which is just rinsing + oil & salt right?) would be best. Maybe take a cheapo plastic storage container for $2 (or whatever else) and cut a bunch of holes in it to allow the airflow to the slices and proceed as per the instructions.

Hey James first of all my family loves the reviews we always learn something keep it up! I wanted to add something to your recent review that you did on the Joie 44000 Healthy Microwave Potato Chip Maker. The name of it is precisely what I want to highlight which is HEALTHY! We own this and the whole point of it for us, was we could make potato chips without adding any oil to the potato. You did not discuss this on your review your focus was rather on the consistency of the potato slices which granted is not always even. I would not say were lazy for using ours the point was to make potato chips without using any oil/Fat. To make potato chips healthier! Thanks again for your work, just felt like we needed to share.

A tip for using any mandoline slicer. When they say to cut a flat and attach the guard, you're supposed to attach the guard to the cut end. For some reason, lots of people get that backwards, and thus stop using the guard and cut the tips of their fingers off.

Thanks for this friggin review because it inspired me to try my gadget that I already had. What a money saver too. I mean, 10-20 cents per potato vs $3.99+ for a bag of chips. BTW my gadget has no name markings except for the following: Patent #4,933,528 Manufactured under license by Emson UPDATE: My product is apparently called the Emson Bacon Wave. It actually cooks bacon well too. We just don't eat that much bacon to remember to pull it out and use it.

I bought the joie a few years back and used it maybe twice. I burned the chips both times (which is why I haven’t really used it again since), but it seems that’s just the nature of making them in the microwave. I actually prefer thinner chips, so the mandolin cutting them super thinly didn’t bother me. The worst parts are the safety guard (like you, I found it difficult to hold on to and at one point nearly cut my finger trying to hold on to it), the bowl not having any non-slip grips on the bottom, and the lid not locking on. And, as useless as it was, I misplaced the safety grip because there was no way to attach or store it.

You could technically stand up the chips by folding the paper towels in a way to compress the chips together with some gap in them, when doing the recipe to fit a lot more chips. Maybe something akin to paper origami (in a FAN shape) can be used to sit the chips on it.

Seems about par for the course for a Joie product. They're local to the part of Canada where I was born and raised. They make a whole lot of different kitchen gadgets that you can find at Walmart and most grocery stores. Some of them are amazing, and some of them are just okay. You could have an absolute field day testing a _bunch_ of their products if you felt like it. I like their Roundy Egg Ring. It's just a simple silicone ring that helps you make more uniformly shaped fried eggs.

I have made microwave chips many times. I use a mandolin slicer and lay the potatoes out flat on parchment paper. I do not use any oil and it works fine. I have never tried to wash the starch not sure if that helps. Cooking time depends on how much moisture is on the potatoes some are as short as 3 mins others up to about 6. Another video on this I watched said adding the oil increases cook time as well. Season to taste I like a garlic salt and pepper blend myself.

I was hoping you'd try cutting some thicker(by hand) and putting them in the gadget to see if that works better.

I've done this in a superior lazier way . I just used a potato peeler to slice the potatoes, drenched them in oil and microwaved on a ceramic plate. I wonder how it would work with one of those microwave ready baking potatoes or fried up in that red microwave grill plate thing.

We make the recipe chips all the time. Love them. If you have a good mandoline it's not too bad.

I think the value of this seems to be in the cooking rack.I'd be interested in seeing if I could make a cheap version of that somehow. Regarding the slicer, they're hard to really get the hang of sometimes, and when they come out as they did for you, it's because you're lifting slightly at the end of your pass. Not by much, but when the slices are that thin, not that much makes the difference!

Get an old fashon grater that have the slicing side, prepare like the recipe but use the gadget to let them stand up in the microwave
