I just realized upon rewatching this film Skipper must have been a horrible teacher in the Navy as in his back story he says that he trained all of his rookies personally and that they were all "Razor sharp" yet the ship they looked at and called "Easy pickings" and decided to attack was either a Musashi or Yamato class battleship... Skipper's personally trained squad looked at the largest battleships built in WW2 and called it "EaSy pIcKiNgS".

I went to watch this movie when it first came out. I was younger, and while walking to the theater's entrance with my family, I tripped and got a huge scrape that covered effectively my entire knee and I freaked out hard. I have a theory as to why this movie was made. So people were very unhappy with Cars 2 being focused on Mater’s fucking spy mission instead of Lightning having to learn how to race on different tracks he’s not used to being on against completely different types of cars. My guess is they realized they missed a potentially good story, it would be weird to just redo Cars 2 but they wanted to keep the general idea. Instead, they went with Planes. Just think about it, an international tournament with drivers (or pilots) coming from all across the world from completely different types of racing series. One of the opponents are a cocky asshole and quickly becomes the main character’s rival. Lightning, an oval racer, is way out of his comfort zone as he has to learn how to race on street and rally cross tracks. Nascar at the time only had 2 road course races a year, they hadn’t raced on a street course yet and they haven’t raced on a dirt track since the 60’s before they added a dirt race to the schedule almost 10 years after Cars 2 released. He wasn’t entirely out of his comfort zone with the rally cross tracks, Doc taught him what he learned during his time racing which was mostly at dirt tracks with Daytona’s beach races that eventually caused his career ending crash. This has gone on long enough, I think you get the point. Long story short, they realized people were upset so they tried recreating the story but still missed the mark

I never expected I'd defend planes of all things but it's likely Dusty got a replacement antenna when he was on the aircraft carrier. Would explain how he could find his way back, how he was found and why he had it in later scenes.
