We shouldn't abandon endorsement for veganism in favor of baby steps. We're running out of time. The amount of humans on this planet is only growing, our negative impact on the planet is only increasing. There's no more time for baby steps.

I agree we need to act quickly, but the meat and dairy industry are doing a good job of making veganism seem dangerous for your health and the planet. I encourage my friends to do baby steps so that they'll at least give it a shot...

I agree!! Maybe we need to focus less on the ethical argument and focus heavily on the environmental argument. Being compassionate toward animals doesn't seem to be enough for most people unfortunately. :( But if everyone only knew that they are endangering their own futures and the lives of their children...This planet is a ticking time bomb and without a LARGE population shift toward veganism I don't think any of the tiny recycling and clean energy changes we are being encouraged to make will do anything to turn our fate.

KTKaBOOM there's no environmental reason to be vegan, perhaps plant based dietarily. the only reason to be vegan is ethics. logical consistency and intellectual honesty are what veganism is predicated upon.

I am sick and tired of hearing about "mean vegans". I have been vegan for well over 20 years and am in my mid-70s and I have not yet met a single mean vegan, neither while I was a meat eater nor since I became vegan. On the other hand, I've had people respond very defensively when they found out I was a vegan (not something I advertise most of the time). The mean vegan is completely made-up meme (at least in part a product of meat eater guilt) and it needs to die. It's way past time we stopped apologizing even for "some mean vegans" because I think they are rarer than hen's teeth.

Ok but there's a comment on this video with 300+ likes - I think the 2nd top comment - and it's literally just calling meat eaters retarded. Mean vegans exist and they are not too hard to find. Of course, there are a lot of sensible, calm ones, but believe me - "mean" ones are there too

Some of you may have noticed that I took down the original version quite quickly. Despite the video file being 10:15 long, KZbin uploaded it as 9:15 so the last minute was missing. This has never happened before so if anyone knows why this happened, please share. Anyway, I hope you guys like it! NOW I CAN SLEEP. Technical note: I restarted my computer and re-exported it 2 seconds shorter to differentiate it. It worked. Corrupt file?

Mic, I'd like to bring up a very important topic; The guy making all these claims is possibly "Controlled Opposition". Basically, the best way to win a 'war' is to lead it yourself. I have little doubt this Vox guy was paid to say this to help promote the Beef/meat industry in a sneaky way. This isn't uncommon, and is very deceptive. Hopefully people will see through this.

What makes me kind of sad is how people say "angry vegans don't work". I disagree. If it wasn't for an angry vegan putting videos out on KZbin I never would have thought twice about what I was doing. I remember feeling so annoyed that these people felt like they had any right to critique me until I really opened my eyes. Then I remember saying "so that's why they're angry". I'm not saying you should be an angry vegan, but they definitely do help some people and they help quite a bit.

Why the Hell would he start promoting eating beef..... just as the Vegan movement is gaining serious traction in many places around the world? Yes, there were a lot of decades of very little success in converting Omnivores to Veganism, but the last decade has been seeing an explosion in the rise of new Vegans and a dramatic increase in the variety and quality of Vegan food items coming on the market. Terrible timing and bad logic. Send him back to the 70s.

I don't know Mike... The reduction of suffering is absolutely immense when you stop eating all animal except cows. Some still insist on eating some sort of meat even when they're aware it's not necessary. Plus it gets people thinking about animal suffering whereas a fully plant-based diet may be started in self-interest.
@jeenjeanjeen
@jeenjeanjeen 7 жыл бұрын
People who are inclined to go vegan for ethical (animal exploitation/cruelty) reasons are the easiest people to convert. They just need to be exposed to the information that's already out there (i.e. factory farm/slaughter/animal abuse footage, Gary yourofsky's speech, etc). But for most people, even those who profess that they're animal lovers, ethical reasons will not be convincing or motivating enough to stop eating animal products. U need to appeal to their selfish motivations, which is the health/weight loss/vanity reasons. But that is still a tall order because most people are so addicted to animal products or have bought into the propaganda that carbs are evil and the only "safe" food (or macronutrient) is protein. There is no amount of activism that will reach these people. The only hope for those is that they'll eventually hit the lowest tolerable low in their health and they're willing to try something that they've never tried before, even if it conflicts with their "carbs are evil" ideology. But then again, most of those people will choose death by chronic disease before that low point comes.

I did a response to this video too... I looked onto this guy Matt Ball, and I found out that the started "Vegan Outreach" in the early 90's with Jack Norris... That is right, that guy Jack Norris who gained some fame a year or so ago when he said this, "People say, I'd go vegan but I can't give up cheese. Then go vegan except for cheese" - Jack Norris of Vegan Outreach. Also, I have come to believe that the best angle to take is the one that affects ones ego, play on the ego and show people how THEY will benefit personally/themselves when they give up animal products. Let's be real, people care more about themselves more than most other things in this world, including animals. The key is to show people how they have been mislead and how they will live longer, feel better, and have clearer mental processes, then people will change. It will take time but it is the most effective route. Best Wishes to all!
@DivergentDroid

I have to agree with Jack Norris in a way - Those people will still be helping the animals by not eating them and no cow has to die for cheese. It will be an improvement in their health too so only positive things can come from it.

Matt never said to replace chicken with beef. Vox made that title. His point is to stop eating chicken. If people don't eat chicken, they will drastically reduce the number of animals they consume. Currently ( and the trend keeps increasing) large numbers of people are not eating red meat and eating birds (and fish )instead. This has caused a huge increase in both the number of animals eaten and especially in suffering, as chickens are the most abused and forgotten beings on the planet. Like Matt I have been vegan for a long time time and an activist for a long time. I stopped eating meat 41 years ago. I cannot tell you how many ex veg*ans I have encountered over the years and how many people who for health, environmental or even out of compassion for mammals over birds, think eating chicken is the better choice. Chicken consumption keeps increasing. The suffering of chickens is heart breaking. It is exactly because of advice like replace beef with chicken which is heard a lot, that we need a don't eat chicken message. Chickens make up more than 95% of land animals slaughtered. At the least, activists should tell people to eat less of the animal products they are eating and not to replace one kind of meat with another. We need to make sure that we don't inadvertently encourage people to switch from eating larger animals to smaller animals. Even when we encourage people to go vegan, most think that going vegan is too difficult. So they replace beef (and pork) with chicken and think it's the next best thing. So they end up eating 200 times more animals! This is a step in the wrong direction not the right direction. This comment will probably be misunderstood like Matt Ball's message has been.

No, he just showed pictures of cows and pigs and stated that it would take "200 chickens to equal the same number of meals" that could be gleaned from a cow." He kept himself morally grey enough to call himself a vegan while Vox took the logical step of entitling the video "Want to save animal lives without going veg? Eat beef instead of chicken." I don't think we need to praise Ball for committing a sin of omission.

I just generally find it more useful to critique the strongest version of somebody's argument rather than the weakest. The idea of replacing chicken with beef seems to only come from the video's title-it's not the position taken on the One Step for Animals website. Yet the gist of most of the criticism I've seen focuses on explaining why more beef is a bad thing and so therefore Ball is wrong.
@Modvegan
@Modvegan 7 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But no pragmatic vegan (except abolitionists, who would object that it is speciesist to focus on one species) disagrees with the idea of asking people to eat less chicken. We aren't trying to critique the idea of veganism, we are concerned that the way he presents his argument will hurt other animals. My first jab in this comment was at the climate change consequences of increasing beef even marginally. Since Ball is making no recommendation to eat less meat (he asks people to give up chicken and leaves it up to them to decide what they want to do, even going so far as to claim that if they make up the difference with other meats, it is still better than eating chicken), he must be cognizant of the fact that his comments would increase demand for beef if taken to heart (especially following his little chicken/pork/beef animation).

No, the average person could not afford to replace all their chicken consumption with an equal amount of beef. The price disparity is far too large. If a person stops eating chickens, they are far more likely to consume much less meat overall. So "stop eating chickens" does not necessarily mean "eat more beef".

Hey Mic, i've been binge watching your videos because I think having a scientific understanding on veganism helps in debating with people who are AGAINST all forms of not eating animals. A question I've received a lot from my family is what will happen to all the cows and the chickens once everyone becomes vegan? Most meat-eaters in my family say that cows will go extinct. I haven't been able to find any reliable sources on it yet. Is that possible to answer?
@luxconcept
@luxconcept 7 жыл бұрын
The world will not go vegan overnight, meaning, slowly as people stop eating animal products, the industries will stop mass-breeding of these animals. It's all about supply and demand. It's not as if cows and chickens will go extinct over night. And besides, like I said, these animals are being mass-bred, trillions of animals are slaughtered every year to keep up with the demand for meat. Another argument is, if these animals population numbers ever get low, they would probably be placed on the endangered species list and we would have conservation efforts for them. Another argument is, these animals would rather not be born than suffer a horrific life and untimely, painful death. Most of the animals bred for food are killed between 6 mos - 1 year old, that's a baby in every respect.
@mshailbop
@mshailbop 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the reply. I feel like these are common sense answers but it is hard to convey that there are solutions to these issues that meat eaters feel would be unsolvable problems in the "very near future" (Like you said, not everyone is going vegan overnight) but these are the questions I get asked.
@MictheVegan
@MictheVegan 7 жыл бұрын
There is no reliable source for an alternate future. I do know that if the world was run by animal lovers (real ones, not ones that eat them too), then animals wouldn't have anything to worry about in terms of going extinct. Perhaps the only ones that would are animals that are bred so extremely that they suffer by default. But honestly vegans love sanctuaries and I am sure there would be hundreds of them. We don't eat dogs in the US and they aren't extinct here.

Just think if restaurants still served the human killing dead cow but made you sit outside to eat it people would still do it, because they like it knowing it is killing them yes others would give it up. When you are trying to reeducate a society it takes approximately two generations.

I'm a plant-based vegetarian. When I'm in a group of people having a meal together, I've actually successfully prevented people from eating meat. They ate cheese pizza with vegetables on it, but at least its not meat.

The best strategy for saving animal lives is every day activism. It does require not just social media but psychological touch. What is the best way to get the message across to that person or that group? We have to be intelligent and collected activists.

The number one thing we need to do when talking to people about veganism is teach them how to replace their calories. Most people think we just eat kale and salads. I always point them towards all the vegan meats, ice creams, plant milks, etc. Then I really focus on talking about starches because when they are out at a restaurant socially, that is when they could slip up. It's easy to get rice and beans, pasta, noodles and tofu, potatoes, etc at almost any type of ethnicity restaurant.

I make videos so people I know in real life can hear me talk about this without having an actual face-to-face discussion (where they may feel defensive). They watch because it's me giving the information, a presenter they know, and because they're curious. It also gives a chance for the information to digest and then they can ask me questions in real life after the info has had time to simmer. Also making videos is a good outlet for me... it prevents me blowing a fuse in real life haha

I think our message should be very clear: going vegan is the solution. Going vegan is too difficult for you? Think again. Still think going vegan is too difficult? Fine, then reduce your meat and dairy consumption while we will do anything in our power to make going vegan easier. Not everyone will go vegan now. but as it gets easier and more attractive more people will try and eventually some day the world will be vegan. It just might not happen in our lifetimes. The most important thing is to make progress.

I live in Michigan and there was a Veg bash here at a farmers' market with vegan food trucks and stands from restaurants. They were scheduled to go from 6pm to 10 but they were ALL totally sold out of food in a half hour because so many more people came then they were expecting. It all went so well that they scheduled two more for later in the year. So yeah, vegans may have an image problem, but we're growing everyday. I think what we really need is the right information out there to help people who go vegan stay vegan. There are so many youtubers and younger people who go vegan for a few months or a couple years, then tell everyone they don't feel good or they were hungry all the time.

I think this guy just sold himself out. The channel wanted to find a vegan who would say these things bc their channel is set up to be informative but not give any real solutions, incase it offends its viewers. I just don't understand vox. It needs to tell its viewers that you can't be an environmentalist and still eat meat. Maybe the production team needs to figure that out also.

In conversation I have found that people generally turn off to the actual word "vegan", so I initially promote a "Plant-based, whole-food diet" for a healthy lifestyle and that the biggest reward is that no animals are harmed and the environment will be able to be healed. I do throw in that it is a vegan lifestyle, but after I am able to speak about the benefits of the Plant-based diet. I am not a millennial, but I also share on Social Media, you didn't address that age group and how they promote veganism (gap is 34-65 which is part of the boomer generation). Think Diet for a Small Planet, Fast Food Nation and other books written on promoting a plant based diet. Thx for doing these videos!

I have a lot of friends who are afraid of failing to be a perfect vegan. I tell them to try to be vegan one day per week to make it seem less scary. A few of my friends have moved up to being full vegan! The trick is to make it seem less radical and to tell them the little steps you took to aid in your own transition.

Katie Byrne, It is clear that you are trying to help, but being clear about the situation with your friends is also very important. It would mean a lot if you could more deeply consider what is shared in this post.; facebook.com/notes/keith-berger/message-to-my-fellow-vegans-baby-steps-are-for-babies-were-all-adults-here/1027853170578115/ Please understand I mean this in the nicest possible way***, but I kind of feel you are selling your friends short. I also say this considering that when I was vegetarian alone, I really wish I had a vegan make this more clear to me. Veganism is not* extreme or scary, and I hope so much that you don't describe it this way to those who are not. There is no such thing as a perfect vegan. Either a person is vegan or they are not. (Sorry to state the obvious, and definitely not meaning to personally insult you!) Anyone who has access to plant based food can go fully vegan, at really anytime they choose. Words alone can have a more powerful impact than you may think. I point this out to you to try to encourage you to be more mindful of the words you use. I am sure you already know this, but baby steps still involve technically unnecessarily paying someone to abuse animals. I am sure you wouldn't want to give the impression that this is "asking too much"... I am leaving this comment because I feel you may be giving this impression, and by doing this, you are not having the positive effect you truly hope to have. I am not attempting to personally disrespect you in any way, please know this.* If you might like a resource to share with your friends, feel free to check out here as well.; earth-species-love-awakening.tumblr.com/

From the perspective of what's best for the individual animals it might not be such a bad thing if the size of rainforests are reduced, all things considered. Comparing life qualities is complex, but I don't know what I would choose if I had the choice between being born as a random factory farm animal and a random rainforest animal.

Can you make a video talking about the pros/cons of choosing to only eat "white meat" as a non-vegan or non-vegetarian alternative? Many people that feel it is impossible to go vegan or vegetarian choose to cut out "red meat" instead, as the health risks appear to be more well known for beef, hot dogs, pork, and sausage compared to chicken and turkey. Basically, your videos are freakin' awesome and I would love to hear your opinion on poultry!

Best strategies for saving animal lives is to always to listen to people and find the angle by which they can be more receptive: health, animal suffering or environment. My personal trainer at the gym made jokes to me about eating animals. "if God did not want us to eat animals, he would not have made them out of meat". He knew also to a certain extent about animal cruelty. But that did nothing to him. Yet when he came to the gym one day with an inflated knee because of arthritis and I told him he could experiment for 3 days how he would feel on a raw vegan diet because a lot of raw foods combat inflammation and I gave him a list (with some cooked food also) he agreed to it and then became very excited at the idea of doing it with his wife. That's a start I think.

My fiancé and i have recently stopped being a part of the harming of animals. So in my opinion, vegans are not failing. Its just a slow battle. But what The Health, and learning all the real cruelty invalved in consuming animal products, plus the negative effects it has on the planet, was all more than needed to give us motivation to go from vegetarianism to veganism. The only real reason we weren't vegan was because we believed that we needed animal products in our diets but we both feel so happy now with our new diets.

I have yelled at him( using caps) to quit putting himself in the hands of the US medical system to give him radiation, chemo and he is thinking of allowing them to do survery. He himself is a trained medical doctor ( he isnt practicing) and ive begged him to use his research powers to get alternative means to rid his cancer. He has not said a word and continues to get chemo. what would u suggest?

I think the best strategy would be on a governmental level, of course. Advertise studies showing land meat is cancerogenic --> increase production of veg meat -- > ban production of all land meat, and leave instead "lab meat". Then the same strategy for milk, eggs and sea animals.

It's a pity Mic , you can't take a wider view of farming. Most of Europe has more than enough water falling out of the sky to grow grass. Average wheat yields are 4 tonnes of grain per acre ( very high by world standards ) , but grassland - which doesn't need ploughing or sowing each year - it can grow well for 20 years or more - gives huge yields of forage. 20 tonnes or more per annum - fixing lots of carbon in the process.

Hi Mic. I'm 15 and been vegetarian for 2 years and I'm going to go vegan. I didn't do it sooner because all my life people have told me that veganism isn't adequate but I've watched a lot of your videos and I now know it is but my mum is still sceptical but I was able to persuade her to let me go vegan. However you often mention veganism is a adequate for all life stages if it's planned well. However you haven't really got a video about it. I was wondering if you could make a video on what a adequate vegan diet is. Thanks.

I think the MOST important thing that can be taken from both videos is that Vegans should try to be better stewards in helping people that eat meat to becoming vegans. If that means in the short term making a dietary change from Chicken to Beef in order to become Vegan than so be it. This will save more animals lives in the long run and be better for the environment, everyone wins. The end goal is the most important thing when becoming Vegan, the different routes that people take to that end goal should be celebrated not shamed.
