Back in the good ol’ days when it didn’t take the population of a small town 5 years to make one game.
@JeffreyThrash Жыл бұрын
Ikr? That was back when we didn’t have to choose between quantity or quality, we got (mostly) both! Not just with Rockstar, but with other companies like Nintendo, SEGA, Capcom, EA, Activision, Sony etc etc having a healthier balance between safe, big-budget epics and tons of quirky smaller games when we wanted something a little different. At least games are crazy-long now (40+ hours even for typical action games!), so we only have time for a couple of games per year at most, anyway.
@s0nnyburnett Жыл бұрын
@@JeffreyThrash crazy long and not an hour worth remembering. All filler no substance.
@dominikhadlow6348 Жыл бұрын
that was still the case back then, its just the fact that the bar of quality has been stooped down to such a low degree that it has become post and parcel to release under developed titles or remakes of franchises
@JeffreyThrash Жыл бұрын
@@s0nnyburnett I’m just trying to find some reason to not completely hate the present day. That said, it was so much easier to constantly replay and therefore remember games when they were shorter. Like, I know Sonic Adventure 2, Super Mario 64 and the Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask like the back of my hand after playing them on an almost yearly basis, but I have to really clear my schedule just to start a second playthrough of Sonic Frontiers, even though that one is one of the shorter games at “only” 25-30 hours to fully complete.
@DeoMachina Жыл бұрын
Yes, but remember that these smaller teams were working over 50, 60, 70 hour weeks or more. Crunch is still a problem but remember that the 'golden era' came at a significant human cost.
@cursedryona6265 Жыл бұрын
The most overlooked aspect of game design was how, back when our graphical standards were lower, it was a lot easier to make a game with a lot fewer people; meaning developers could make more games faster and experiment more with each one since there was a smaller investment put into each title, with the studio's other games making up for a game's lost profits if it doesn't turn out well.
@John-996 Жыл бұрын
One of the good things about Rockstar making so many games in ps2 and ps3 era was they can build on them in other games.
@javiers5599 Жыл бұрын
A lot of the techniques and mechanics in RDR were integral to GTA 5's design
@Kacpa211 ай бұрын
This is why i despise modern triple A games and those "standards" We dont need more detail than peak ps2 era/ps3 era games. Spend a bit more time on animation and use gtaiv's euphoria/rage and pull up the detail of day GTA SA a bit more towards GTA IV or Bully scholarship edition and it's all you ever need. Spend rest of efforts on content and then other games using same baseline. Instead we get nothing for years, but somw half assed GTA Online dlcs. We still got a few ganes from rockstar in late 2000s early 2010s, GTA IV, Midnight club LA, Red dead redemption, Max Payne 3 and GTA 5, but then whole lot of nothing until RDR2(which was great but we hardly need such detail in games) followed by whole lot of nothing until GTA 6, then followed by even more of nothing for years to come.
@foreverpure195011 ай бұрын
They weren't. I used to be on EA's team around 2004-20. The graphical standards were just as high. In fact it was a top priority to push all you can from the system you were currently on. The only noticeable difference I saw was that now its MUCH easier to have good graphics in games than it was back then. We have so much more tools and tricks that we know now that would have been so helpful back then. What has changed has been crunch times. Previously we were under alot of stress and pressure to complete our projects but, we still had a reasonable time frame to do it and the resources to do it. Now we see the stress and pressure but with either 0 time to complete or alot of time to complete but your resources will be siphoned for other projects that take priority. It's a tricky situation to be a game developer now and I'm glad I left the industry. (You also have project leads from corporate adding in more and more content last second without notifying you ☠️) Very glad.
