Met a retired GM technician and he told me Japanese products always tended to be superior but if I were to ever get a GM product always go for the highest trim as they get significantly more quality control and attention to detail when they’re built and inspected. Like a night and day difference.

I feel like Japanese quality has gone down while American makers have gone up. The reality is most people can't even fix anything on their own these days even though information is easier to get now than ever.

I think people have to understand that the only way these US trucks compete is by "fooling us" with initial quality. You will have a few guys who say anecdotally that they had "tons" of issues with the Tacoma, or the guys who never had issues with their Colorado, but at the end of the day when you work with dealerships and mechanics, and you see hundreds or thousands of them at different stages of their wear cycle. The Tacoma has continued to annihilate these other trucks, with actual real world reliability by age and mileage, and the resale value absolutely shows that, so it's relevant even if you don't plan on keeping them. I can't type it enough, but I see these trucks every day, for 6 years at my current position, and I can't tell you how many times we've got our hands on or sold Ford/GM/Dodge trucks that were taken excellent care of, that seem confidence inspiring, and end up losing their engine or transmission on us, or our guests, in regards to the Tacomas during that same time period, I know of literally 1 that we had an engine issue with, my mechanics were not permitted to diagnose the truck, as it wasn't ours, and it was heavily modified, so I'm unsure if that was the trucks fault. If I keep even 1 of you from being won over by the flashy lights, and "premium" quality of the domestic cars, then I'll feel this whole rant was worth it. A paint job isn't enough to win me over past the transmissions that hard shift from the factory and fail just outside of warranty, the engines that shred themselves apart and have to be rebuilt from metal shavings, and replacing electrical components over and over again because they're just "kind of known for having electrical gremlins". Google the website called dashboard light, they have real long term data on reliability, not the first 3 months like JD powers "initial quality".

It's refreshing to see a Toyota fan recommend a Chevy. I don't think you should take reliability into consideration on a brand new vehicle (especially since it already has reliability and quality issues), so it looks like the Chevy is the best truck for your money again. (The last Colorado was also more reliable according to repairpal and had less than half the recalls since 2016 according to NHTSA. It's time for us all to admit the Colorado is a good truck

David, completely agree with your review and assessment of these midsize trucks. After buying and driving a base model, then switching to the Denali, it was a complete change. The appearance, handling, steering, feel of the road, comfort of the cabin and seats made for a much better daily driving experience.

I wanted a midsized truck and wanted a Tacoma. I drove a 2020 and it was a disappointment. I decided I would wait for a new model to come. Aftet waiting and waiting I bought a 2023 Colorado TB as a gap solution until my 2024 Toyota Hybrid off-road would arrive. 15k miles later I canceld my Tacoma order and am debating on upgrading to a 2024 Canyon AT4. The new Tacoma is a good truck but didnt reset the midtruck bar like I thought it would.

The Canyon AT4 is what you should have tested instead of the Denali. The AT4 is a closer model to the Tacoma TRD OR. The AT4 blends off road capabilities of the Colorado Trail Boss & the interior upgrades of the Z71 but better.

Great review as usual, David. And I agree, I'd prefer the GMC Canyon over the Chevrolet Colorado regardless of trim level, as GMC decided about a decade ago to play to Amercan's notions that it was "always more upscale," by actually being more upscale. But now, I hope you make the comparison with the equally new Ford Ranger! Also, most of us don't care what most dealers, product specialists and former automotive executives think; as their mission is to sell, sell, sell. I think the real measure of how good a truck, SUV, van, or car can be, is how good the lowest priced, base trim models make a customer feel; to drive and to own. A strong foundation is what truly matters! 🐰

Bought my son a new 2017 Texas built Tacoma TRD Sport that now has 140k miles with only routine maintenance. My daughter wants a truck too, but does not like the Taco, so I have an order in for a black Canyon so hopefully the delays are minimal. We have had good success with my wife's Traverse (needed a vehicle in early 2023 and Toyota literally had ZERO available without a substantial wait) so I decided to try the GMC truck instead of another Tacoma. For me I have a 2015 4Runner LTD with 190k miles. it's not without its quirks (crap doorlock actuators and non working parking sonar), but overall has been as advertised. I'm a Toyota fanboy first, but man that Canyon is a good looking truck. Time will tell....

According to the GM Engineers, the 2.7 was designed to be a turbo that was engineered as a diesel engine that runs on gasoline for strenth and durability. Also, the cooling systems on the 2.7 don't necessarily run off the engine crank, instead they cool by electric pumps and motors so the turbo is never starved of adequate cooling if the engine is off or at low idle like most turbos. This engine is quite amazing and durable and there is nothing like it out there that compares to it in durability and performance, and its been, being tested since 2018 in other GM trucks and has been doing quite well. Also the newly up graded 8 speed is light years better than the 8 speed that had all those issues. I have a 2023 Canyon and the transmission is smooth as silk so far after 11k miles and i can easily say that because i also have a 2017 Cadillac ATS with the older 8 speed and traded in a 2019 Sierra last year with an 8 speed, although i was lucky because those two vehicles, transmissions weren't so bad that i had to service them at any time that i owned them.

Due to garage space, i need to go for a mid-size truck. Only towing I do is my 16ft aluminum fishing boat. I can’t decide between the tacoma and the colorado. I really like the new design of the tacoma and also the 6ft bed, however I am 6’2 and 250 pounds so I have a bit more space in the colorado and its a bit cheaper. Which one should I choose? If you read my comment, feel free to share your experiences! Thanks in advance 👍

My issue with the tacoma comparisons is that a TRD off-road premium or TRD sport premium is 54-55k. That's without a mark up or dealer installed extras. Which a lot seem to have. A ZR2 is around 52-54k. That's way more truck for less. Not to mention the increase coming when the hybrid arrives.

I think Colorado has been very reliable since its outgoing generation and this new generation is just a perfection of the last generation so we have a platform that was excellent since 2015 and now it has been perfected then the 2.7 engine has already been on the market for several years and has very good results so in terms of reliability I think Chevrolet is better than Toyota since Tacoma starts with a new platform leaving behind its old platform that was working since 2003 with some updates over the years this 2024 Tacoma is already having reliability problems seriously, its front axle has broken, it has had electrical failures, the 4x4 is delicate but this is completely normal because it is a totally new platform, Toyota's reliability formula is to preserve and perfect its models over the years without modifying much, but in this case Tacoma is in an area that it does not control, it is just beginning with the platform the worst stage of a Toyota

AT4 Canyon, save the 7k and keep the more classic interior. I drove the taco sport would have bought it had they had it in stock. But not having the truck available it allowed me to shop around more and I did buy the AT4. It’s far cheaper and a much better quality interior. The torque is plenty, tows more and also has a much higher payload than the taco. My kid also thanked me as she fits easily in the back and not squeezed into that awful back seat on the taco…
