I've thought more than once about writing a fanfic about Maglor son of Feanor. In my mind he wanders the shores of Eriador, still a capable musician, but not often practicing it. Instead he most often dwells with the Druedain of Druwaith Iaur, where he has become a healer, and has great prestige among the Dru-folk. In my plot outline Cirdan sends a team of elves to find him and beg him to return to Valinor. Maglor agrees and journeys with the company to the Grey Havens, where he is part of the Last Ship company, along with Cirdan, Celeborn and the sons of Elrond. Along the way he points out the place where he threw the Silmaril into the sea and, when the ship arrives in Eressea, news of this reaches Ulmo, who sends his servants after the stone...

If you’re taking requests I would really like to hear your theory on how Glamdring and Orcrist were found in a troll hoard. The orcs were so afraid of those swords that they gave them nicknames so I doubt they would’ve taken them after the destruction of Gondolin, so who grabbed them? I also doubt trolls took them and handed them down one age to the next.
@PiraticalBob Жыл бұрын
They were probably taken originally by orcs as war trophies. The fact that they were recognized on sight by all the orcs from generations millennia later indicates that they were hung up for display in an orc-hold somewhere, one of the ones sacked by the dwarves during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. Left behind by the triumphant dwarves, they were looted by Tom, Burt and William, who were simply scavenging the orc-hold afterward.

I can think of eleven right now. Two are well known and could probably be skipped over; the Blue Wizards. The twin sons of Elrond. We know they remained in Rivendell after Elrond left, but not their ultimate fate. Legolas mother. We know she married, but don't hear anything more of her. The sixth is potentially much more interesting. Arvedui had two sons and we know what happens to Aranarth, the elder, but nothing about his younger brother. I personally believe he went North with his father and died in the shipwreck. There is also Amandil, father of Elendil, and his three companions who sailed to Valinor in 3316 S.A. We don't even have any beliefs from the Dunedain on what happened to them! Theee is also the child of Morwen, the parent of the Steward Egalmoth of Gondor. We don't know who this person is except that it is their son who becomes Steward of Gondor! The rest of Nimloth's company also disappear! Another person who goes missing, but reappears, is Erkinbrand of Rohan.

Tolkien decided in his last writings that the Blue Wizards had come to Middle Earth in the Second Age, succeeded in their task of turning large numbers of the peoples of Rhun and Harad against Sauron, and therefore greatly reduced the forces available to Sauron in both the War of the Last Alliance and the wars of the Third Age.

There's a letter from 1964 that recently came to light that included 9 pages of text including the following paragraph: "The other two Silmarils were also taken by the Valar from the crown of Morgoth. But the last surviving sons of Feänor (Maedros and Maglor), in a despairing attempt to carry out the Oath, stole them again. But they were tormented by them, and at last they perished each with a jewel: one in a fiery cleft in the earth, and one in the sea. So the three Silmarils were lost for ever “until the remaking of the world”: in air, earth, and sea. Thus ended the First Age." It's titled Concerning... My view is that by far the most convincing argument about Maglor is that he is in Eryn Vorn in Minhiriath. That is because: 1) He must have started his exile in the general vicinity of Lindon, as with all elves surviving the sinking of Beleriand. 2) He clearly could not stay in Lindon proper as he would not be welcome by Cirdan in particular, given his involvement in the sack of Sirion, so he will not be in that land. 3) It is very unlikely that he would have travelled to any of the surviving islands of Beleriand for the same reason, as he could only obtain ships from Lindon. 4) He is very unlikely to leave the seashore, having thrown the Silmaril into the sea and his ban from Valinor, so he is very unlikely to travel further than absolutely necessary. That leaves the coastal regions of Eriador as a possibility. Any further south, and you're into heavily populated lands. 5) That leaves three coastal regions of Eriador (excluding Lindon, if it counts)- Enedwaith, Minhiriath, and Forochel. 6) I think that Forochel is unlikely- he's going to have heard stories about what happened in the Helcaraxe in his youth, and isn't going to think much of the subarctic. So one of the two southern regions. 7) Eryn Vorn is the only patch of woodland left on the coast of Enedwaith or Minhiriath. Elves, clearly, have a habit of seeking refuge in woodlands in times of danger, and come to think of it, so did Maglor in Ossiriand after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. It's also (almost) uninhabited and was never really under anyone's control, except nominally Arnor/Cardolan

Ah, rhe Blue Wizards. When even the author slips into character mode, and just says "I never learned what happened to them." Some characters really do just "go missing", and it's weird, sometimes, when otherwise Tolkien could be SO detail-oriented. There are blades of grass, from flying seed, to sprouting shoot, to the horse, and back to the earth, that get more details than some of Tolkien's characters. I still wonder about some of the "missing dragons". Several of the great Dwarf strongholds were sacked by dragons, and while none were necessarily as mighty as Smaug, no tale ever tells of their fate; of Dwarves recapturing these halls, or Men killing them, and scattering the look. Oh well.

Things like in the video where you talk about bereg who takes 1000 men with him into eriador, i've never heard of these stories and didn't know where to find, thats why an summerize on all those things that happend there would be awesome. Thanks for the wunderful content and keep it up.
@ciaranirvine Жыл бұрын
There are only fragments on what was going on outside of Beleriand, unfortunately. But it's likely that Bereg's band were the ancestors of the Men of Bree. From Unfinished Tales, on the return of the Numenoreans to Middle Earth in 600 SA: "The news spread swiftly and Men in Eriador were filled with wonder. Although in the First Age they had dwelt in the East, rumours of the terrible war 'beyond the Western Mountains' [i.e. Ered Luin] had reached them; but their traditions preserved no clear account of it, and they believed that all the Men who dwelt in the lands beyond had been destroyed or drowned in great tumults of fire and inrushing seas. But since it was still said among them that those Men had in years beyond memory been kinsmen of their own, they sent messages to Gil-galad asking leave to meet the shipmen 'who had returned from death in the deeps of the Sea.' Thus it came about that there was a meeting between them on the Tower Hills; and to that meeting with the Númenóreans came twelve Men only out of Eriador, Men of high heart and courage, for most of their people feared that the newcomers were perilous spirits of the Dead. But when they looked on the shipmen fear left them, though for a while they stood silent in awe; for mighty as they were themselves accounted among their kin, the shipmen resembled rather Elvish lords than mortal Men in bearing and apparel. Nonetheless they felt no doubt of their ancient kinship; and likewise the shipmen looked with glad surprise upon the Men of Middle-earth, for it had been believed in Númenor that the Men left behind were descended from the evil Men who in the last days of the war against Morgoth had been summoned by him out of the East. But now they looked upon faces free from the Shadow and Men who could have walked in Númenor and not been thought aliens save in their clothes and their arms."

Somehow I always thought it was also about a certain world-weariness... about losing yourself. I've got a What If suggestion: What if Saruman survived into the 4th Age? And honestly: he DID reveal to Gandalf that he made a Ring of his own. Saruman was a Maia, in fact a peer to Sauron in the service of Aule. He had the requisite background to craft such things. We never learn what his Ring does, but we do know Saruman had been the preeminent scholar and researcher of all things Sauron, as acknowledged by Gandalf and the rest of the Wise. He would be aware that Sauron's Ring was the repository of his power and essence, and that Sauron had reformed (returned from "death") at least twice- the drowning of Numenor, and then the Last Alliance. In both cases, since Sauron's Ring wasn't destroyed, he was able to come back. Fast after Numenor, because he returned and reclaimed the Ring. Millennia after the Last Alliance, since the Ring wasn't destroyed but he never got it back. If Saruman made his own Ring for the same purpose, he should be able to return from being stabbed by Wormtongue. Same principle. I don't think we ever resolved what happened to his Ring, so it's fairly likely to have survived, and thus held the bulk of his power and essence. Saruman was known for advanced weaponry, the "fire of Orthanc" that breached the walls of Helm's Deep, and the other "devices of Saruman" used to drive off Sauron at Dol Guldur. He was also known to be both charismatic and manipulating. Tolkien's in-universe conception was that Middle Earth IS our Earth, the Red Book a real historical document and history of ancient events. The advancement of civilization (of Men) in reality has always been tied to technological advances- the culture with the newer tech wins those wars. Going from bronze to iron, to steel, machinery, gunpowder, etc- "evidence" of Saruman at work behind the scenes?
@Vehk_of_Vehk10 ай бұрын
I could be completely wrong but I believe as far as the ring lore stuff, since saruman used the same techniques basically that Sauron used in his crafting of tue ring, Saruman's ring would be innately tied to the one, as the elven rings are tied to the one, despite Celebrimbor making them himself, so with the one's destruction, Saruman's ring would also lose its power.
@scoobysnacker199910 ай бұрын
@@Vehk_of_Vehk Not necessarily... Celebrimbor would not have known what to look out for at deeper levels, as he didn't understand it was Sauron, and also perhaps he didn't fully understand what exactly was happening with the Rings. Let's say they are all computers, with wifi to connect to the network that runs Ea. Now, let's say that Sauron slipped in some code somewhere, perhaps in the boot sequence, that directs all the Rings to connect to the One first, and only access that single pathway. And once it does, it must always do so, and if that pathway is lost, you lose any further connection. Celebrimbor might not have the 'coding' knowledge to even know it's there, and just knows he needed that to start his build. But Saruman might- have the knowledge and coding skills, from Aule. What he took from Sauron was concept, to build a device to tap into that network. He could work out the steps without taking Sauron's actual coding; he could connect to the overall network, but not the LAN that the One and the other Rings were on. It wouldn't be tied to the Rings of Power, one way or the other. Thus, it wouldn't take from them, and it wouldn't collapse when they go down. But if someone copied HIS work, then maybe they'd be tied to HIS ring.... if he put that into the coding.

I seem to remember that Mirkwood was attacked by Mordor during the War of the Ring. After that mess was sorted, he and Celeborn went to work and cleared the forest from everything Sauron related with Galadriel pretty much flattening Dol Guldur into nothing. After that, they divide the forest between themselves and the local humans and pretty much live in peace. I'm guessing he eventually leaves for the undying lands. Either on his own, or with Legolas and Gimli, or even Celeborn as he hangs around with his grandsons after Galadriel leaves and eventually leaves himself.

Tolkien had a habit of explaining _too much_ about his world. However, his world was so vast that there are still mysteries in it, thank god. It's always good to leave some things unexplained, unintentionally. (Tom Bombadil does not count, lol.)

All vids like do is convince me that the deeper you look into Tolkein the worse the stories appear and the poorer a writer he actually was. Maybe just enjoy what we have or we'll cease to enjoy them at all

I mean, there's an argument to be made that once you delve far enough in, it does lose some of the magic.
