@@Ethan_Brant Why not Physical Graffiti? To me its just an easy #1. Its not often that double albums wouldnt benefit with a little trimming down (Beatles White album for example). PG doesnt have a weak link and it has such a sprawling array of styles and of course more songs than any other album. Its their high water mark creatively in my opinion too. If I could only ever listen to one ever again it would be PG. Hard to pick number #2 though. Either III, IV or HoTH.

The 1st time I heard Led Zeppelin was in 1969. We had a convenience store in the neighborhood and I believe I was only around 12 years old. They had a wire basket there that was full of 45 rpm records with holes melted through them. I'll never forget it living loving maid was on one side and whole lotta love on the other. They hit my generation of kids like a steamroller. I was already experimenting with the guitar. And what an influence they were. I still play guitar today and I'm 62. Thanks to all the members of Led Zeppelin for doing what they did. I also listen to them to this day. And will till the day I die.

However, it's common knowledge that the Gibson Twin Neck was purchased after the album's production, to perform Stairway to Heaven, live, with just the one guitar. I remember when LZ4 was first released. I was a senior in high school and already a huge Zep fan. Stairway and Misty Mountain blew me away, but it did not take long before the entire album got played over and over and over and over on 8-track tape. I maybe overthought this but i really wanted to say it out loud. In my junior year of highschool i got to make a essay about led zeppelin and when i listened to the fourth album again after listning to the three first a idea came to me. My theory is that the B side of the album is the true fourth album and the first three songs on the album was just the build up to "stairway to heaven", the album true opening track. Basically my idea was that "black dog", "rock n roll" and "the battle of evermore" represents the first 3 three album by two reasons. 1. They all would fit perfectly on the other albums. Black dog for the first album and so on. 2. They basically go through chronologicly all of the bands different sounds over the years til they reach the fourth song "stairway to heaven" representing the fourth album and how it as the video says blend all the different sounds into one song. I may have overthinked it but it just makes the album better in my opinion.

Two or three other songs were recorded at the same time; they are on Physical Graffiti: Night Flight, Boogie With Stu were recorded at Headley grange during the Iv sessions; Down By The Seaside was recorded at Island the same year, where the final mixes (and possibly a few overdubs) of the songs were done (they mixed the songs at The Record Plant in Ca, but rejected all but one of those mixes done and redid them at Island instead). Three songs on Physical Graffiti were recorded during the Houses of the Holy sessions: The Rover, Houses Of The Holy, Black Country Woman. Bron-Yr-Aur was recorded around the time of the III sessions.

Here's the thing, any of Led Zeppelin's albums upto Physical Graffiti can be chosen as the greatest album of all time. Never did any band have an equally tremendous run as Led Zeppelin. They are truly the greatest rock band ever to come on Earth. Their musical prowess is unmatched, their tightness and complexity is virtually impossible to copy. Dazed and confused got me hooked into zep. Couldn't stop listening to it. It was sounds that I'd never heard before, or played before. The introduced me to the blues with the first two albums. Never looked back. The only part of the British Invasion I liked.

John Bonham ordered a new drum set and the guys who delivered it set it up in the stairwell. Jimmy got Gibson to make him a double neck so that he could play stairway Live, not for the recording stages. The solo to stairway was done on his telecaster. There are a few mistakes in this video

"The Sixth Stone," Ian Stewart, also features on the album. When The Rolling Stones mobile recording truck arrived at Headley Grange, "Stewy" came with it; inside the mansion was an old, semi-dilapidated upright piano and no one who tried could get a decent sound out of it. When Ian sat down to make an attempt, however, the instrument instantly came to life because he was hitting the keys just hard enough. Jimmy Page and the guys loved this so much that Mr. Stewart can be heard playing this particular piano on "Rock and Roll" as well as the PHYSICAL GRAFFITI track "Boogie With Stu," which was a holdover from the LED ZEPPELIN IV sessions.

IV takes the hard rock feel of II and the acoustic tunes of III and combines it into one glorious album, for example, Hard rock songs: Black dog, rock and roll, misty mountain hop, four sticks, when the levee breaks Acoustic: going to California and battle of evermore But wait I’m forgetting stairway! No, this song is so good because it blends both the folk stuff with the hard rock stuff and one of the best songs ever written like he said, the perfect combination of those two albums

Even Pages stage setup reminded me of a castle during the '77 tour in Cincinnati. Four Marshall cabinets side by side, with 4 heads, 2 stacked on each end, and 2 Echoplex's side by side in the center. Didn't make the Who concert 2 years later. Was tripping to the Full-album release of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' on WEBN, when they would play an entire album (double in this case) to promote new releases.

Headley Grange has an iconic place in music history. Fleetwood Mac recorded there; Zep did IV and all the 1974 songs for Physical Graffiti there (the other songs on the album are outtakes from Houses of The Holy, IV & III); Genesis wrote the bulk of 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' there. If I'm not mistaken, Gentle Giant wrote there as well. The drums for 'When The Levee Breaks' was (according to Andy Johns) recorded near the stairwell with two Beyer M160 ribbon mics hanging from the balcony, into a Helios console, smashed with Urei 1176 compressors and some Binson Echorec slapback.

One of the most underrated tunes I think, is four sticks.. what happens there at the end of that second interlude part before Plant sings the beginning of the last verse... is pure magic. That's the type of timeless, spine chilling, goose bump making stuff for me. And his voice KILLS in that one.

Led Zeppelin 4 's actually a concept album and the concept is all about stasis and movement - 'Rock And Roll'. For instance, the album begins with, 'Hey, hey mama, said the WAY YOU MOVE.... ', follows with 'Rock And Roll', 'Stairway To Heaven' then ends with the situation of 'to be a rock and not to roll' and the album ends with 'When the levee breaks, mama you've GOT TO MOVE', just four of many instances that point to my suggested underlying theme.

The way they used the house as an effect unit back then was absolutely ingenious and pure magic. They basically used the same concept we use today of send/return but using real rooms, stairs and bathrooms as fx units; the send was sent through amplifiers and played live in the desired room, the return picked up with mics and sent back to the mixing board.

Whenever someone comes across one of the rock mags with the top 500 albums of all time we end up arguing about what the top 5 or 10 albums should be. My personal rule is that these top albums should NOT have one weak track- they should be great from start to finish. That being said, my top 6 albums are: 6) Bruce S- Born To Run. 5) Fleetwood Mac- Rumours. 4) The Beatles- Abbey Road. 3) The Who- Who's Next. 2) Led Zep- IV. 1) Pink Floyd- The Dark Side Of The Moon.

Personally, I would put other albums before this, including Presence and Physical Graffiti. Nice to see somebody giving John Paul Jones credit for that guitar riff in Black Dog. The other parts of the song, such as the reversed time signature to confuse the listener, was also his idea. Physical Graffiti was the first album I jammed along with when I first purchased my Les Paul in 1980. Great memories!

great video! Just a little thing, page's "Zoso" sign was actually not of his own design, but was featured in a couple occult books. Most recently in "Grimoires et Rituels Magique" (published in 1972 and 1998 after LZ IV), and quite a while back in "Le Dragon Rouge" (first published in 1521 and reprinted in 1850).

“Zoso” is a mystery but I always thought most likely a woodcut “Z” from a medieval book chapter heading - the “Z” forming the image of a demons face with the S the nose and O’s the eyes - if so guessing Page found this in his occult research. Black Dog may have been a dog that visited the studio - but the “Black Dog” is also a well known English folk demon.

This was my introduction to Led Zeppelin I was 9 years old when this album came out, I by way of a neighbor heard this and my life changed forever, I stared later at my brothers copy like looking upon a powerful book of occult knowledge, this was no ordinary music album or band, it had no writing, it had no pictures of the musicians, it didn't tell you what it was, the cover didn't seem to make sense, it seemed cold and mysterious, the picture of the old man with the sticks on his back hanging on a broken building, then you opened it and saw the night scene of the hermit on the mountain top holding his lantern looking down the mountain side as someone appears to be attempting to journey to the top, the album sleeve had calligraphy on it telling a story about a lady buying a stairway to heaven. You pulled the album out and there these 4 symbols over the words Led Zeppelin. The music on it was unlike anything I'd known before it. From the haunting echoes of Black Dog to the thundering Levee breaking, it went to California, the Owls cried in the night, the queen of light to her bow and turned to gold, they packed their bags for the Misty Mountain where the spirits go, a lady bought a Stairway To Heaven and the sounds that accompanied those stories was captivating and powerful in a way I'd not yet heard and would never forget. It was like a new religion or something, there was something powerful and mysterious about this Led Zeppelin, it shook me, it moved my soul and captured my imagination with the coolest heavy music, my attraction to the guitar and the powers they possess really took on a whole new meaning. This album had quite an impact on my musical self and was to me truly "The Thunder Of The Gods"

The "ZoSo" symbol is an antique alchemy symbol without apparent meaning. Some say it represented the alchemy itself. It is present in multiple medieval manuscripts, but it's meaning remains unknown.

It's not really unknown though. What it is is elastic in meaning. For example, it's a sigyl of Saturn, and Jimmy is a Capricorn. Saturn rules his astrological house. Given that Saturn is also said to have a baleful influence on those not protected by it's sign, maybe it was also a subtle "bugger off" ro the critics

I remember back in the 80s, I read that Page had said he was idly doodling in a phone book while on the phone (as you do) when the "Zoso" emblem just appeared.
