Dan the problem is not your receiver it is your radios. The MXT100 does not put out as much as the MXT115. The Mxt100 only puts out 5 watts were the Mxt 115 puts out 15 watts, other than that they are the same radio.

Vicky, it was most definitely the Radios, I worked directly with Midland engineers to get it repaired so the 2nd gen radios wouldn't have this issue. It had to do with the weather band circuitry in the MXT115's, 2nd I've had my GMRS license a long time. I've built solar powered GMRS repeaters and did retrans for the ARMY. I've been a HAM radio operator for 18 years. KD7RBW. I'm quite familiar with my radios, rules and antenna theory, and last time I read the Part 95 rules, you could not have a 40 watt base, only a 40 watt mobile. So I will re-read to see if it has changed. Thank you for your unsolicited diagnosis and expertise.

@@danalbert5877 the change is 50 watt mobile and 15 watt base under the new part 95 E I have my ticket too. kb1fvr

I have 2 MXT100s-one as a base, one in my car. Base antenna is an Ed Fong J-pole. Car antenna was stock when I tested. I got comms up to 10 miles away over varied heavily forested terrain. My base anteena is only about 20' up now. Big hills do cut off the signal though. I am think of going with MXT400 after your review.

If you have room for it, absolutely. It would be nice if the new Part 95 rules would allow a 50 watt base, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

@@danalbert5877 Part 95 E rules allow 2-5 watts license free channel 1-22. channels 15-22 are for repeaters and need a license. You are allowed a 50 watt base. License is 75 dollars renewable every 5 years effective January 1, 2018.

Adjusting the squelch to "00" in ctcss and or dcs mode is best for receiving sensitivity.

am an electronic engineer in croatia and i do a communication repeater at base stations ... this is an example of poor processing in sdr transiver .rda chip 1845.6 are the original patented sdr transiver. they are modified by a copy of the AT 1845.6 sdr chip which is a piece of shit

I agree these "low parts count" radios are based on a chip that has severe limitations. 1) The deviation is narrow band +/- 2.5 KHz (11k0F3E or lower) while the GMRS service permits +/- 5.0 KHz (16K0F3E) so right off the bat the deviation is compressed. Secondly, I think the receiver SDR implementation is poor and there is no FM limiting to reduce multipath noise which is a common complaint on some radios using this chip set. Save your money and but a decent 50 watt LMR type radio that meets EIA/TIA 603D.

Nikola Gnječ so what would be a better affordable radio. I think the most I have to spend is $250 which would buy a midland mxt400. What do you think, does it have better parts, I know it’s 40watts
