This was about the Blue Sky Mine which was forced to close because of asbestosis affrecting nearly every mine worker and them dying in droves

not only that, but they also dumped large amounts of asbestos dust on the town itself

It is actually about the town of Wittenoom and the gorge where the mine was at. It affected not only the miners but the people in Wittenoom. The blue asbestos fibers were everywhere. The mine was closed because the company CLR was losing money but people were still dying from the asbestos. They wound up closing the town and destroyed the homes and buildings. The intent is to bury the asbestos tailings but yes the asbestos is actually all over what was the town. It really needs to be cleaned up.

My father Dave Roberts was a deputy shire president for the shire of Ashburton and late premier Ernie Bridge declared the old mining town of Wittenoom gorge mines and townsite closed down from late 1980.s till now and now its biggest contiminated zone in the southern hemisphere

Midnight Oil's albums always sound a little different from one another as they progress, but especially from 10-1 onwards they all still have a unique Midnight Oil sounds that's consistent throughout all of them. Many fans said they went soft in the 90s, I personally disagree (especially since their live acts didn't go soft at all), but I think they still kept their edge in their albums most of the time, and I think "Earth and Sun and Moon" is definitely their most underrated album. I'm glad to see you enjoying your journey through their discography, and can't wait to see more!

My maternal grandparents were both born in Northern Ireland. I hope you're staying in the South. From my experience folks from NI are not as welcoming of strangers. Even the rural areas. It's like they're still constantly on high alert. But last time i went was still during "the troubles". Outside Omagh in the mid 90s. Might be different now. Best of luck. Tim in Texas

@@WhatTheHellEverything I have not been back in 30 years so much has changed. Smaller towns though... They're friendly to tourists. I was in that murky state of being kinda belonging but also not. And I was there for almost a month. You'll definitely have a good time there.

If you watch the original video, you would see that the song talks about Wittenoom and the blue asbestos mine. The town is no more because the asbestos caused the town to become toxic with the dust that causes cancer. To this day blue asbestos tailings are spread throughout the area and the government has not figured out how to clean it up. People are still dying from asbestosis and other diseases. This song talks about Wittenoom and how it should not be forgotten.
