"Critics who've never read a comic book, ever." It shouldn't freaking matter. Your movie should be able to stand on its own two legs. If you had to have seen the source material in order to enjoy an adaptation, you aren't doing the franchise justice. ...No pun intended...

You've got a good point there, but there's a difference between needing to read the source material and respecting the charachter in the comic. Marvel movies do take liberities from their comics, but it is also in respect to the charachters. Tony stark did'nt build ultron in the comic, but you can understand why he would because it fits with his charachter especially considering what he saw in that wormhole.

FlowingStarlight You're right. Also this "It's made for comic book fans" excuse really holds no water. You cannot cater a movie that needs to make a billion to a niche audience. And yes, I know there's a metric fuckton of comic book fans... But to make a billion you need to appeal to general audiences, it's just a fact.

Aside from being bad, I liked Suicide Squad more than Batman V Superman. Reason why is I think it was Harley Quinn and the Deadshot. It feels like they steal the show and have personality. As for Batman v Superman, i felt like watching two kittens being skinned alive. The two kitten should being Superman and Batman. It's down right disgusting.

Alberto Arras Yeah, I preferred SS too. I think that both movies are extremely DUMB, but at least SS wasn't also *pretentious*, like BvS. BvS was both dumb AND pretentious, at the same time, and that's just unforgiveable. Watching a dumb movie is frustrating, but watching a dumb movie that also thinks that it's brilliant is *unbearable*.

+Michael Carranza That doesn't really make sense. Superman has never worked with any other super powered people in the eye of the public. It's not like Superman was such a stranger to Batman that the latter wouldn't know that. And Batman has already met Wonder Woman, so he KNOWS who she is. Why would he ever think that she would be with Superman? And if she were, wouldn't she have been present during their fight? The line just doesn't work.

+Michael Carranza So Batman, the world's greatest detective, cannot figure out who the woman he met earlier is? Batman has never seen Superman work with anyone else, AND Batman is the one who had a flirtatious conversation with her. Not Superman. Did he just assume "Oh, I guess the woman I talked with at the museum just so happens to be here to help out Superman, whom she presumably has never met, as she lives undercover to prevent anyone from knowing she's over 100 years old"? Why do either of them think she's there "with" someone else? Maybe she's just there to help out against Doomsday? Sorry, the line doesn't make sense. How am I the one who's dumb? The writers couldn't seem to remember they had Batman and Wonder Woman meet earlier in the film, so maybe they're the illogical ones.

A scene idea to show how you make Lois/Clark dynamic better. Lois is in the desert, it all goes down, shes taken hostage, Superman smashes down to confront the terrorist who has a gun to her head. She gives him a knowing look. Superman "lasers" the man's gun to melt it or stop it from firing. With the gun disabled Lois lays a serious smackdown on him (some Krav Maga perhaps, she is the daughter of an Army General after all) and takes him down. In that one seen you show multiple ways in which they work as a couple. They trust each other, they understand each other and they work together as one. It also shows that shes a strong and capable badass in her own right. Instead they write her as a clumsy ditz who needs constant rescuing from her invulnerable god-toy.

The writer didn't understand the difference between utilitarianism and kantian philosophy (categorical imperative). Therefore Batman is now a murderer. They don't realize that katian philosophy is at the heart of ALL of Batman's relationships with his rogues gallery including superman. By changing that one thing willy nilly, they basically abandoned every argument with every character in Batman's universe. The joker should not only be dead in this reality, but he simply should never had existed in the first place. Batman v superman failed miserably because of that one change and they clearly are none the wiser. I think the reason Batman fans gravitate towards him and not Ironman or other superheroes is because of his adherence to the categorical imperative. To replace it with bullshit utilitarianism is to fundamentally betray the character and all prospects of telling a good Batman story.

+IntegralBif See now you're being paradoxical, the screenplay/script should not and did not follow subjective moral precepts despite several consensus. Correlating these ethical philosophies is not an atrocious analogy but you have to tread carefully. What your saying is the polar opposite of what Terrio and Goyer did; they differentiated and segregated utilitarianism and categorical imperative when applying emotional arcs. You have to remember that as the movie said, "this is a paradigm shift." Bruce is broken, so manifesting disobedience to some of these philosophies while regulating towards others is completely faultless (It builds story and character). And The complexity of doing so is beyond exemplary. As for the joker, we have to wait for suicide squad and the rest of the DCEU, to see how these characters grow with the story (how morals change). This movie along with other films with adequate character development where character studies, thereby they associated morals and ethics contingent to the film as a whole. Pertaining the rouges gallery and comics writers such as Geoff Johns, Scott Snyder, etc also do so accordingly. This is why philosophers are looked down upon, the mere notion of certain philosophies (mostly from Kant's era) are contradictory, up to this day most philosophies from the past are debunked and rendered subjective.

Crackerjap, although it seems that IntergralBif is correct, read my comment about how some elements of his comment are not adequate. What I forgot to mention was that every project has the right to creative freedom and put BvS in context to the source material (comics), after Robin died Bruce starting murdering for a while. That tied into his moral code and also ties into the ethics we're talking about.

I really hope that "Deadpool" set the standard of how to do the *Comic Book characters* in a movie. There is reason that "Deadpool" is just about Universally loved while this movie is heavily divided. And NO, it's not because, "hurr durr Marvel fans Hate ALL DC", Deadpool was *HATED* in "Wolverine Origins", but completely loved in his new movie. Why? Because they stuck close to the source that gave birth to the love of the character. Go figure, when you stay close to that comics that made the love, you have a more loved movie by fans... who knew? Overall, this movie was a [C], focused too damn hard on the sequels, and not being a movie that can easily stand on its own too feet. - The whole Batman V Superman, was build up with a bad payoff. Luther blackmails Superman into fighting Batman? Really? Is that the best reason to come up with for the fight? I was hoping that it would be a Battle of Ideologies where they wanted to stop each other, not "Hey, I have your mom." - Doomsday was not needed and 'Killing' Superman was a really bad move to me. We KNOW for sure that he is coming back, but doing it so early killed a lot of the tension for later. The fight itself I loved, until the end. When Superman who could barely swim with the spear takes down Doomsday with it. During that whole part I thought, "Give the damn Spear to Wonder Woman!" Or even have Batman AND Superman work together to stab Doomsday with the spear since he knows that Superman would be weak holding it.

It's REALLY frustrating to see them waste Doomsday. Doomsday should be built up over a couple of movies. You also need the whole Justice League formed and established, so we know how badass they are. Because then, when the entire JLA goes straight at Doomsday and he tears them apart, it has IMPACT. Then, you can do a literal 30 minute battle if you want, encompassing a week of combat, with Superman fighting nonstop, the only breaks being when another JL member recovers enough to distract Doomsday for a few moments. We can watch heroes we've cheered for and seen victorious beaten like ants, and we can see Superman rise to his full potential, unleashing his full power, as he realizes that holding back even the tiniest bit will doom the Earth.

Personally, I felt like Wonder Woman shouldn't been in this movie. She had the exact same problem as Lane did. Nothing to do. In her first scene, she steals something. Next scene she gives it back due to not knowing how it works. Scene after that, she's reading files that we (the audience) could've seen when Wayne had them. Next scene she's leaving a plane and heading into the fight, but that was only because they nuked Kent in space. The writers or maybe the studio had to go way out of their way to force her into a movie that didn't need her in it. The sole purpose of her being here was simply for a Justice League movie that might not even happen.

Just taking about being dark while still being funny, I think Jessica Jones is a great example. That show is dark, brutally dark and really heartbreaking seeing what the main character goes through with the PTSD and mental abuse. However, she is one the funniest character in the MCU, just based on how she bounces back from situations. Also the scene early on in the series when she is gathering her support group is probably one of the hardest I've laughed in an MCU property outside of Antman and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Well i have to say ONE thing about the Marvel-Formula: They did not cramp everything into one movie and expected it to work. Marvel had some setup-movies. To focus on ONE character for one movie and THEN they threw everyone into "The Avengers". That would've been the thing DC should copy, because you cannot introduce this big bunch of huge Superheroes and expect it to work. DAMN i'd have loved a PROPER Wonder Woman movie to introduce her for this one...though her role here still was kinda "Eh..." Also: In the end i liked the casting choice for Woner Woman more, than i expected, but seriously...why do we always get those f-ing model-like women? (Yes i know why! That was rhetorical). I mean Wonder Woman is a fucking BEAST and also looks like that. She could punch Superman and he would FEEL THAT PUNCH! She is the finest warrior of the amazon-tribe and those girls are BAD-FUCKING-ASS. I, for once, want a Wonder Woman, that looks like the badass she is. Get an actress that looks like she could kick me to the moon.

Jkop Well they already had well established characters, that had their own movies before that. We already know how Iron Man ticks, we already know what Cap would do in a given situation. They did some new things, yes, but they didn't try to put EVERYTHING the universe has into one movie, trying to explain it.
@Logan912

+Jkop That's because in Civil War we're already 13 movies into the MCU (plus TV and Netflix shows,) and everybody was IN CHARACTER - something David S. Goyer knows nothing about. I'll admit, I don't think Man of Steel or Batman V Superman are bad movies. It's just that, for me, MoS is "meh" throughout, and BvS has a bad scene for every good scene.

I enjoyed this movie beginning to end. I would under no circumstances say that it was good, but the trainwreck was so beautiful and so curious that it never left me bored. And as a follow-up to Man of Steel, that's an achievement. The main thing is that the movie is silly. From the first random horse all the way to the last, it's a silly movie. I accepted that immediately, and had a good time. The first act was spent trying to piece together the plot through all the horrible editing, and the second and third acts had some actually really good fights in them. Plus Lex Jr. was just an absolute treat whenever he was on screen.

Here's the thing with the more serious tone of the DCEU in comparison to the tone of the MCU - on paper, it's a good idea. But the execution is not the best. I'm gonna use another franchise to describe what the DCEU should be like. If the MCU is Harry Potter, then the DCEU should be Lord of the Rings. What do I mean by that. Well, in Harry Potter: 1) the setting is our world, with fantastic elements inhabiting it; 2) the characters are down-to-earth, human, flawed and relatable. This fully applies to the MCU. In Lord of the Rings, however: 1) the setting is another world entirely and everything is grand and epic; 2) the characters are larger than life but still human enough for us to like them and root for them. That's what the characters in the DCEU should be. I also compare the Harry Potter series to the MCU's Phase One - the previous installments set up a big, grand payoff; in the case of HP it's Deathly Hallows, in the case of the MCU it's The Avengers. Lord of the Rings tells one huge overarching tale. And that's how the DCEU should have started - with a Justice League trilogy that tells one huge overarching story culminating with the League facing off against Darkseid. After that, the studios would have free reign to do all the storylines we've waited God knows how long to see - Crisis on Infinite Earths, Tower of Babel, Blackest Night, Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, The Death of Superman, etc., etc.

Brandon Standifer That's where I put it. It also is more dependent on past films. It's the thematic conclusion to the trilogy, the true and final victory over the Joker. In the DKR, you actually see the Joker DID win as truth/good was exchanged for a lie. And that ultimately plays a roll in all the conflict in DKR. But in the end, truth and real justice prevail. I think that's part of the issue with it some have.

One last post and I'm gone. Has anyone ever read JLA vs Avengers? There was a part in that story where they went to each other's universes. You want to know what's crazy? The DC guys thought the Marvel heroes were evil because everybody was afraid of the heroes in the Marvel Universe. Spider-Man was a menace, the X-Men were feared, etc. Then, in the DC Universe, the Marvel heroes thought the DC heroes were tyrants. There were Superman statues and a fucking Flash museum. They had to be forcing people to worship them. Look at the movies and people love the Marvel heroes in the Marvel Universe and fear the DC heroes in the DCU. Crazy!

Marvel has done a better job of capturing their character's essence on screen and updating their stories in modern times. They make us appreciate the characters both inside and outside their universe. DC keeps missing the mark in this department. They gave us a Superman who isn't Superman because until he is forced to reveal himself he barely does anything super saving only those who are around him when disaster strikes. Why would anyone like this Superman? He is indirectly responsible for all this death just by being on Earth which eventually led Zod there. Even with the Nolan Batman they screwed up with the last film. The first two movies were really good but the last film sank all that. By having Batman "retire" for 8 years they essentially made Bale's Batman not Batman. He was just a guy in a rubber bat outfit who beat up crooks for about 2 years. The whole point of Batman is that he's obsessed and he would never just give up even if Gotham somehow magically cleaned up crime. There's always crime somewhere. From the public's point of view in the film universe this Batguy was a quasi-bad guy who killed a beloved DA. When he returns after 8 years and lights his signal most of the citizens would probably have been confused not knowing if this was a message of hope or fear or nothing at all since the symbol had not been seen in nearly a decade. Batman is rendered unimportant in his own universe. In BvS we have a Batman who at least has been at it for a long time but has no qualms about murdering people which is directly opposite of the comic book character. Even the hardnose embittered Batman in The Dark Knight Returns isn't this kill-happy. I'm just hoping Suicide Squad is as good as the trailers and I'm looking forward to the animated The Killing Joke with Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy.

I will say this for Batman v Superman...I am a film critic and I have done critiques on most of the Batman movies...I have seen a couple of the Superman movies...and I can honestly say that this film might be one of the better ones that I have seen in either genre. I just wrote my critique of this film tonight and overall it was a very good review. Granted, I am not familiar with the comic books at all, but I liked the theme that the movie had, the cinematography was interesting, and I was legitimately surprised that I liked Ben Affleck as Batman. I did not think he was going to pull it off, but he surprised me and I felt he gave a different kind of portrayal of the character and I liked that it was an older version of Batman...not like Christian Bale or George Cloony who were more comical. Henry Cavill also does well as Superman and I thought the supporting characters were good as well.

+CeltycSparrow I don't know how you can call this one of the better Superman movies when this movie was even barley about Superman. When they were asking the question "should there be a Superman", that was very interesting but basically everything about Superman and that question/theme was completely sidelined and not fleshed out at all. I wouldn't even call this a Superman movie. Its more of a Justice League set up movie. And not to mention this movie was far more flawed then Man of Steel, Superman, and Superman II. Now you are telling me this is a better movie then Batman, Batman Returns, Mask of the Phantasam, Under the Red Hood, Return of the Joker, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and the Dark Knight Rises? Please explain to me how? I liked Affleck as Batman but his portrayal wasn't that much different then Bale. And how as Bale's performance comical exactly? And you thought the supporting cast was good? Please explain. Lex Luthor had no motivation and didn't capture one shred of essence of the character. Lois Lane was shoehorned in and the script was trying so hard to make her relevant it was ridiculous.

The Dark Knight, in the midst of where it looks like everything is going wrong: Alfred: "I suppose the police will have me arrested as your accomplice." Bruce: "Accomplice? I'm gonna tell them the whole damn thing was your idea." Those 2 lines had more wit then this entire movie.

I enjoyed the film mostly. It had it's problems but it honestly didn't bore me. Granted I had no expectations for this movie because of how people kept saying it was going to be awesome or horrible. But my friends and I all pretty much agree that Bruce, Alfred, and WW were all brilliant.

I kept waiting the whole review to see the part where you talk about the fact that Lois throws the spear into the water to get rid of it, not knowing anyone can dive in and grab it. And that she is psychic, knowing they'd need the spear and that it'd be effective against a creature she has no idea what it is. And the fact they could have given the spear to Wonder Woman, and Sups would just keep Doomsday in place till she pierced him. She is strong enough after all. She cuts one of Doomsday's hands. And the spear tip is made of Kryptonite, making it that much easier to pierce his heart. =D

It's always one interrupting the other, but more on Rob's part. When Rob's talking, you can tell Doug's respectful of his opinions, because he lets him finish. The MOMENT Doug opens his mouth, Rob immediately goes ape-shit again without a care for what Doug says.

It felt like lot of the shit that happened in this movie could have happened in their own movies, Wonder Woman had zero purpose, the weapons and suits come out of fucking nowhere, there's literally hardly any explanation, and the ENTIRETY of Doomsday's part of the movie just felt out of place, why put FUCKING OOMSDAY in a movie called Batman V Superman?! IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE BATMAN VERSUS SUPERMAN!!! This movie's biggest sin is being confusing, it's not bad, but it makes no fucking sense, but at least it wasn't boring (My favorite part of this movie was probably the acting)

You know, coming from a big superhero fan that enjoys superheroes, Batman v Superman, a superhero movie blockbuster with some of the most iconic DC characters, makes me incredibly bored in the theater and makes me want to leave the theater while the film is playing is a pretty large failure in my book. I have no respect for this film and I honestly hate everything it stands for. This is not a good Batman movie in any way and it's sure as hell isn't even close to being a good Superman movie and no amount of flashy action, fan service, and pretty visuals is going to keep me from saying that this is one of the worst comic book films ever made.

44:34 to 50:00- Agreed. I'm in the category of people who found this movie "alright, with some problems," and about 60% of the other people who saw it that I know of thought the same, Ultimate Edition or not. The other 40% despise it, again whether it's the Ultimate Edition or not! This is BATMAN VS SUPERMAN! HOW is this not a great movie? I also agree DC movies have been getting progressively worse ever since The Dark Knight. While The Dark Knight Rises is in my opinion a great film, it's definitely the least of the Dark Knight Trilogy. Man of Steel at best is good (but not great), and at worse mediocre. The Batman v Superman Ultimate Edition, is overall alright, with some major problems. Suicide Squad? It had three great characters (Deadshot, Harley, and Waller), two good ones (El Diablo and Rick Flag) and absolutely nothing else except maybe a few okay action scenes and a decent soundtrack. Otherwise it's just bad. If Wonder Woman isn't at the very least good, I will no longer pay to see DC movies. The unique WWI setting is promising, and it has a great cast. But I'm not going to be surprised if it's not very good either.

It pisses me off so much because I love Marvel, but I love DC more in general, but in the films, Marvel is _crushing_ DC to a pulp. I thought Suicide Squad was going to be the light at the end of the tunnel and...well, you know. I will be so depressed if Wonder Woman sucks, cos I'm so tired of waiting for another great film based on my favorite comic series...

"I would kill to see Superman save a cat out of a tree" "I forgot about that scene (where he saves people) because it was so fucking boring" ...really? Do you not see the problem here? This is why we have an action-centered Superman. We know he cares about people, and saves people, etc etc, but that's boring as shit on film, especially in a movie that is already crammed full of unnecessary scenes. On top of that, what was he supposed to do in Man of Steel? Stop fighting Zod to save people while Zod just continued to kill more people? I swear I will never understand this criticism.

I felt that the biggest issue with DC's recent films, is that they PLANNED an entire cinematic universe. Marvel just sorta took it step by step. First Hulk, then Iron Man, and it went on from there. There was always a feeling that Marvel knew that they had a chance of failing, and thus were careful when setting things up. DC doesn't think that they could ever have a chance of fucking up, and did everything all at once. DC doesn't need to do what Marvel does, they just need to pace themselves like Marvel does.

Technically, IRON MAN was first, but whatever. Yeah, they planned this from the beginning. After the success, Warner Bros went "oh, crap! We gotta catch up! Quick, get everything you can and put it one package!"

GreatAwesomeReviewers | StarDust Studios Yeah. If anything, Warner didn't plan enough and rushed. Marvel is too far ahead to have any real competition now, but had Warner/DC been patient, they could have taken the lead eventually.

The thing is that filmmakers like David S Goyer and Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio didn't care for comics or Superman for that matter. It's now it's a good thing that. Geoff Johns is now head of the DCEU but I felt like the damage has already been done.
@jarekgunther
@jarekgunther 7 жыл бұрын
Geoff Johns is head of the DCEU, yes, you're right. But unfortunately, the DCEU is under the whims of Warner Bros. At least they're doing something to fix it, but it pains me to see the cinematic universe of my favorite comic series (and I love Marvel) crumbling. Wonder Woman will be the deciding factor for the DCEU...and it's hanging by a thread.

This would've fixed it: 1) Get a character actor to be Lex (Bryan Cranston could've worked). 2) Have Lex, not Bruce, running around that day Superman fought Zod and have him conclude that Superman is a serious threat. Here is a pair of aliens tearing apart MY CITY, dammit. Only I decide who dies and what gets destroyed in Metropolis.
