I love Studio Laika, but as of now, Laika is never gonna be huge hit in theatres because their films aren't targeting the generic audience like most of the animated movies this year.

+MadCap Productions General Audiences are a thing, it's what most movie companies target for their marketing. I don't see studio Laika targeting the general public like secret life of pets did.

These days it seems like the only time parents will take their kids to see quality family films is if they're made by Disney or Pixar. The Lego Movie was a recent exception, but even that still had the Lego brand that millions of people recognize.

Agree I wonder why parents don't take their kids to quality films rather than just junky films
@fg09403
@fg09403 8 жыл бұрын
no they don't, they take their kids to what ever the parent is willing to sit through. if the parent wants to see gods not dead 2 but can't get a baby sitter they will bring their child to the movie. If the parent thinks a movie looks like complete shit, they aren't going to subject themselves to it.
@TheCinematicPackrat1
@TheCinematicPackrat1 8 жыл бұрын
You're both right. Parents will sit through garbage for their kids, but they also will bring their kids to widely inappropriate films. I saw parents brings their REALLY young kids to that Piranha movie from a few years back and to the Benicio Del Toro Wolfman remake.

Laika isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The company president is the son of Nike's co-founder (who is also Laika's chairman of the board), and while Laika's movies have always done just well enough to break even, Nike will keep them funded in the event of a flop. And yes, Coraline is a Laika film.

People complain about hollywood being unoriginal and running out of ideas but then pass on beautiful, artistically put together films like this while giving Secret Life of Pets, a movie that borrows so heavily from other, better kids films and is pretty generic and by the numbers, hundreds of millions of dollars. I don't understand the logic in this.

Just saw this movie earlier with my husband & there wasn't any body else in our theater. It's great cause it's like a private screening, no one to bother you but it's bad b/c people aren't there to support the movie that I want to do well. I've been really excited to see this as I love Laika films plus I'm a huge fan of stop motion. Wasn't disappointed Spoilers questions to Brad Brad, with the mom at the beginning and the grandfather at the end, did it seem like a story about alzheimer? Seems like you could take the movie at face valve and everything actually happened or it was Kubo relating stories to his grandfather the whole time. I love how the village at the end caught on quickly and started saying, "Oh yeah you're amazing . . ." to remind the grandfather what his forgotten. Yeah, I was able to call the twists but it didn't detract from the movie. Oh man! That was the first time I saw the trailer for Monster Trucks and I was sitting there saying please let this be called Monster Trucks. It looks so stupid but I hope it's a fun stupid that goes over the top. I was thinking of Megas XLR then and Street Sharks when you guys were talking (right before you said it). The title is so corny, stupid, and literally that it reminds me of Sharknado. Anyways, see Kubo -- it's awesome

Yeah, including the friend I was with and myself, there was only 4 people in the theatre when I went to see Kubo opening weekend... there were several 3d showings and I went to the only 2d showing that day (in the nicest theatre we have here too) so hopefully people went to the 3d ones. It was an amazing movie... Paranorman did manage to get its budget back with the foreign gross (but it made under its budget domestically), so Im hoping kubo will be able to, but its hard to say ): I really want it to do well... Laika makes really great movies and every time they push themselves more and more with the medium which is amazing.

I went to see this last Sunday and REALLY wanted to see it and I feel ashamed to admit this, but I fell asleep...all I got from the story was Kubo had a crap life. He basically had to take care of his mom who suffered from brain damage...ZZZZZZ....only to end up having to take care of his grandpa who suffered from brain damage. My question: who takes care of Kubo? I do plan on watching it in its entirety because it was visually beautiful. (The ZZZ's are where I fell asleep BTW.) Love you guys!

Paranorman made 13 mil during opening weekend. Boxtrolls made 17 mil. Coraline made 17 mil. Laika has a history of tepid opening weekends, but they make their money back over time, especially when it goes overseas. So Kubo will do fine. Just routine.

I took a 2h trip to find a theater that played this movie undubbed and in 3D. I really loved it. I think it's beautiful and although a bit slower than other Laika movies it was also more melancholic. For the first time… well, as far as I can remember… I did a special 1H trip to another cinema(the one close to me didn’t feature that movie) just to see ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’. I really liked and was impressed enough by the style, just from the movie preview I had seen at another movie, that I went for it. Sadly enough, when I saw it, there was only 4-5 other people in the room… It really wasn’t advertised much. A shame, really.

Today I finally got to see Kubo. Unfortunately way later because here it was released just about a week ago and I waited for seeing it with the original audio but now was forced into the German dubbed version :( My opinion: I really really wanted to love this movie, I was excited...and I somehow don't love it. I don't dislike it, it's above average but feels more average than other LAIKA productions like awesome ParaNorman. You said that you don't quite get this universe in the story and that pretty much everything happens. That's a point that was bothering me. Random magic happens whenever it's needed, it's like there are no rules. I don't need everything explained, just give me some structure within this world to comprehend. Also other things didn't amaze me as much. But I give some credit that it DOES have a couple of nice, touching and amazing scenes. And typically for LAIKA it again looks great. I wanna give it another try, on DVD, in English then.

Well there aren't many stop motion films anymore, so it's hard for them to be popular. They aren't unpopular tho. The Lego Movie is animated in a style reminiscent of stop motion, and that was insanely popular. I just don't think Laika is really interested in making a "popular" movie, they're more interested in telling stories that they find fulfilling and challenging themselves which makes for good art, but isn't always blockbuster material. As long as their films continue being successful and they keep being able to challenge themselves and deliver quality entertainment I'd say that's the best outcome everyone could hope for.

I've noticed that LAIKA's movies always don't do well at the box office. I'm not sure if its the art style or it just seems too dark or it just doesn't appeal to parents. Personally, I want Kubo to do well so LAIKA can continue to produce movies because, they certainly put in a lot of heart to their work. To be honest I felt LAIKA did a better job in cultural immersion that Big Hero 6. I love BH6 but it felt more of a backdrop than an actual mesh of America and Japan. Even if modern Japan is very westernized it still has it's own unique look and feel.

FUCKING THANK YOU! I knew that Robinson Crusoe animated bullshit was a piece of crap the first time I saw that damn trailer (ironically, I did see that trailer when I went to Kubo). I kind of wish they did have the super racist stuff, just offset it on cute farting animals; see how THAT works out...

Kubo is played by the actor who plays Rickon on Game of Thrones, so definitely very white.

You know what the frustrating thing about this is. The amount of hardcore crafstmanship that went into this movie will be left unappreciated because Toy story with furries is recognizable with the target audience of idiots and their kids. This was a very mature movie like Laika' other works, but at least the kids will learn something memorable from these movies. Not just another toy franchise to exploit. God these under appreatiated gems losing to the Minion virus in childrens movies makes me sick to my stomach.

I think part of the reason why this movie isn't doing so well is the marketing. The ads made it look kinda dull, which is the opposite of how the movie is according to everyone I know who's seen it.
