Kind of makes sense, the way they described this movie sounds like it is another pretentious, cheaply animated, shallow, dialogue-heavy Shonen Anime, down to emphasizing its lore like they think you are just going to be enthralled with it despite not making very much practical sense.

From what my friend who saw it with me noticed, as she read the book series, they tried to abridge all 3 books into one movie. I noticed that maybe the studio didn't trust Burton after his previous missteps to make the whole series and just had him compress it down to one. Also apparently when they leave the house and it explodes is supposedly the end of book 1 so the last 20-30 minutes is 2 books.

I had a lot of fun with this movie. I think this is Tim Burton’s best movie since Sweeney Todd, only because I haven’t seen Big Eyes yet. There were a lot of families in my screening and I was proud that none of the younger kids were frightened by the Hollows. Well, I didn’t hear any crying or screaming. They (the Hollows) were like something torn out of Guillermo Del Toro’s sketchbook, which is awesome! It did make me laugh when the little girl of the couple next to me (she was probably about six years old) went “aww” when a Hollow got a crossbow bolt through the head and died after killing Samuel L Jackson. As you say kids need to see at least a few movies with very dark concepts running through them, and it’s best to start at a young age.

The thing that got me about this movie was the whole time bubble thing. Living the same day everyday, never leaving this one island, never aging or growing up for all eternity? There are like ten different Twilight Zones episodes dedicated to explaining why this is a terrible idea! Other than that I found it enjoyable but nothing really that special. The skeletons were cool, Sam Jackson was a really fun villain and Eva Green was gorgeous so I was kept happy throughout it.

Bit late to the party here, but with 20th Century maritime history being one of my little hobbies/passions/neuroses, the whole thing with the boat (a fictional ocean liner names RMS Augusta) bugged the shit out of me. In fact, Brad says he gave up at them raising the ship, I gave up way sooner, also due to the ship. Near the start of the film, when Jack and his father are first arriving in Wales, there's a newspaper headline on the pub wall about an ocean liner that was sunk nearby during World War I. It's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it bit of foreshadowing, but if you actually pause and read the headlines, it will make your head explode. 1. It says the Augusta was struck by two torpedoes. That's some pretty substantial damage right there, even to a modern steamship. Remember, it only took one torpedo (and a possible coal dust and/or boiler explosion, and no, not hidden ammunition, just heading off the conspiracy nuts right here) to sink the RMS Lusitania, a ship we can visually guesstimate to be about double the size of the Augusta. And yet... 2. The paper goes on to mention that despite such a severe, by all rational rights lethal blow, the ship somehow remained afloat for 18 hours! I'm sorry, but no. That's just not how merchant vessels of the early 20th Century work. For it to have survived that long, it would have to have been built like a freaking battleship. Except not even that, because the British battlecruiser HMS Audacious also sank during WWI after striking a single mine off Northern Ireland. Granted, although I can't find exact numbers, it took Audacious a good long time to sink, but nowhere close to 18 hours. And let's just compare that to other contemporary ocean liner sinkings from the time period: RMS Titanic, 1912: ~2.5 hours HMHS Britannic, 1916: 1 hour RMS Lusitania, 1915: 18 minutes RMS Empress of Ireland, 1914: 14 minutes! After being struck by two torpedoes, there is no way Augusta could have survived for anywhere close to 18 hours; no merchant vessel of that era could have survived that long with that much damage. And even if she did, that raises further questions... 3. The headlines claim that 894 lives were lost in the sinking. On a liner that stayed afloat for 18 hours?! Off the coast of Wales, in British territorial waters, on or just off the main shipping route into the port of Liverpool?! Um, bullcrap! There is no possible way that a stricken ship in distress would have been unknown or without aid for that long in those waters. By 1914, it was required that all passenger liners be equipped with wireless radio transmitters and that said radios be manned 24 hours a day, a result of the Titanic sinking. So Augusta must have been able to send out distress calls and attract aid. But okay, maybe one of the torpedoes struck her generator room and killed the power (highly unlikely, as the photograph in the newspaper shows the ship's final plunge by the bows, almost impossible if the power room was flooding as that's usually closer to the stern). That still doesn't account for them still being within sight of the Welsh coast, and even within a short boat ride of a fishing port. Why didn't the passengers and crew abandon ship and use the lifeboats to row to shore, either onto the beaches the peculiars later use or directly to the port? Come to it, why didn't they use the lifeboats at all; in later shots of the raised wreck, we see that most of the ship's lifeboats are still on their davits, indicating that they were never launched in the first place. Does that mean that nobody aboard the Augusta made any attempt to save themselves? And that nobody tried to come out to rescue them? And that's setting aside all of the nonsense about the state of the wreck (How did the ship end up upright on the seabed? That's very rare in large shipwrecks, where the ships tend to more often come to rest on their sides. Why are the funnels still upright and intact aside from some corrosion? Those aren't built to be extremely structurally sound and usually collapse during a sinking. And if the dome over the grand staircase caved in to give the peculiar girl access to the interior, why didn't the glass vaulted ceiling in the ballroom do likewise? I guess the latter two could be "explained" by the long sinking time; maybe the ship sank so slowly and gently that it remained basically intact. Such is not unheard of, such as with RMS Republic, sunk by collision in 1909, which remained nearly intact on the seabed until finally collapsing due to corrosion). And I won't even touch how technically nonsense the raising and sailing of this shipwreck is. Actually, thinking about it, this one newspaper article is kind of a microcosm of the whole film: shocking and intriguing at first glance, but the more you stop to think about it, even for a second, the more questions it raises without reasonable answers, and the more its story falls apart.

Jason Lasica Nah like Burton and Ryder came out and literally said that Beetlejuice 2 was going to happen and they already had a script. This isn't Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian either, it was only meant to bring back Keaton and Ryder. They said that after Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, they were going to start shooting. But then just Tim Burton's representative said that, no, it wasn't happening. Burton later said that it wasn't, "time" yet. Everyone is on board though so who knows, news keeps surfacing about it.

I finally saw the movie lately. And first of all: I am so happy knowing that I am not the only one noticing that the children's powers (like what the twins can do) was underused. Sure, that would have made the movie resp. the climax shorter. But all that actually makes the characters look dumber and it gets often frustrating. Speaking of frustrating: Yes, even though there's a lot of exposition talk I could hardly follow how all this actually works (and some essential things aren't explained a little bit) and I first thought that's because I am stupid or something. But the movie also doesn't take much time to let this sink in. Just as you two said it and this describes the issue quite well. But at some point I was more careless about the story anyway because the actual creative and interesting story turned more and more to another setting for the worn out "Some world is in danger, some one true hero has to come and save it" scenario. But I also enjoyed the cinematography, a couple of scenes, designs, effects and the creativity here and there. So it's not really bad, it's just a nice-not-great treat treat in the cinema for this year's Halloween season. In my list of 2016 so far it's in the middle. My previews there: Doctor Strange, Strange Beasts and where to find them, Kubo and the two Strings, Storks. One last fun fact: I tried to watch this movie a week before in the same theater but the theater's technics failed. As a redress I got one free ice cream and TWO free movie tickets. Isn't that neat?

I have a stupid question: I've never read the books or seen the movie yet, but I know how the timeloop thing on the school works. So my question is how does the story/plot progress after the villains are introduced and they need to sort of run away? Did the timeloop make an entire alternate universe? They all can't theoretically leave the timeloop without dying instantly, so that makes me question how any of the plot outside the school works. Do they just let the bomb drop so that the timeloop ends and they're free or something along those lines? I know this is probably a weird thing to knitpick at, but I have a sense of what could happen, and what is shown in the clips and trailers brings up a lot more questions.

They flipped Olive and Emma, as in Emma, girl whose powers are VERY DAMN IMPORTANT in other books, needs metal boots and can control the wind. Little Olive controls fire. The sweet girl who can control plants (damn my eyes for forgetting her name) is nothing like the picture the book so happily provided. They've got the creepy costume twins instead of the suit and tie brothers. I haven't even seen this movie and I'm so pissed. And heartily disappointed in Tim Burton right now.

The whole second half/ending is entirely original from Tim Burton I guess and made me very angry as a book reader because the way they treated the plot and ending, there is no need for either of the next 2 books to become sequels. In fact, quite impossible to make because there are no more problems to solve after the first movie.
@MechaRandom428 жыл бұрын
I also read the books, and the ending did make me sad they did not set up the problems in the other books. They could still make sequels since they need to find a new loop, but yeah, they would have to add a lot of new stuff to make them work.

I really enjoyed the books and is say the first half is fairly accurate (excluding the Emma and Olive weirdness they did for the movie). I was with it until the last third, where it really starts to veer off course. I really liked the books, so I was pretty disappointed. I'd say if you're a really big Burton fan and can approach it without comparing it too much, than maybe? Other than that I'd probably skip it or wait til it's on Netflix where you can gauge for yourself without spending money on it.

I think that's because Tim Burton doesn't really do sequels. Not to mention the film was released in September which is kind of the dead time for movies. A lot box office bombs happen then because people are going back to school. In a way, Tim Burton purposely changed the end so that the movie could work as a standalone and not have to worry about whether it''d make enough money to warrant the book's sequels. Not to mention two part movies of the final book are starting to become less popular since Mockingjay part 2 and Alliegent bombed making it up for debate whether it'll continue as a tv movie or not.

I don't think the third book would've worked as a two-parter, but I am disappointed they chose not to adapt a pretty good trilogy as well as they could have.

The book is OK. It's not too well written and is super gimmicky with the photos, while the film looks gorgeous and Miss Peregrine, while a Helena Bonham Carter impression, is still great, it is a lil too silly, but the end fight in Blackpool was not only hilarious but well done that I forgave the forced ending

So the book is basically your typical YA novel. Gotcha.

Is it me or is there anyone else out there who think the hollows (or whatever the name for eye eating monsters were called) look suspiciously a lot like the slender men from Creepypasta? And also (spoiler alert)....they killed off Judi Dench's character in the film. They built her up as this new protector....and out of no where, she just gets murdered and has her eyes eaten. I so wished that was brought up. I just found that so stupid. It was so random and unnecessary that I'm not sure if I should find it darkly amusing, or weak use of a character. Did it happen like that in the book? 😐😐😐

So I just watched the movie and I have just one question and maybe someone who read the book can help me out. Why did the kids have to live in a loop? I mean fine bring them to a secluded place to be safer or whatever but why must they be stopped from aging? Example being Hogwarts. They looked for magical children and brought them to this school hidden from muggles but they still aged. You could argue they needed to loop because of the house being bombed but we see they could just have left the house after it was destroyed. Only thing can recall is her making an offhand comment as to it being better they remain kids. The only thing I can see as to why they have to be children is to better control them. Think depending on age the age, the kids won't think to challenge authority. They also will think the idea of being young forever is not a bad idea. Lastly, for some of the older kids, the fear of being hunted by the hollows. Then after awhile, they been in the loop so long they would likely age and die if outside the loop too long. Just saying we clearly see they can survive because the grandpa left the loop and if they all weren't hold up together maybe wouldn't be a buffet for the hollows.

Nicole Joyner it's much harder for the Hallows to find them basically Because they are basically no where Thing of time like a shirt They are in the pocket

But by having them there technically makes them in constant danger of being found. They will be hunted forever because they won't age. Not to mention harder to find one in the world alone than like 15 huddled together. Also the grandpa guy was able to go out and live until ripe old age and when he was found just him died not the entire house of peculiars.

But they would be in constant danger also if they left No they won't be hunted forever -only until the hollows die

The movie botched its logic with the time loop. There was visual evidence that suggests that anything that happens in the loop probably won't change the future. But obviously stuff in the future will change the house in the past.

I am more upset about the romance between the two main characters. The girl still had feelings for the grandfather(when he was younger) and projected those feelings on the boy.
