What Brad describes at the beginning sounds almost like an Uncanny Valley for remakes. It got *so* close that your brain could only think of the original, which this still wasn't. So then your brain rejects it even if it isn't bad, so it just doesn't work.

Have you seen either the Cinderella or Beauty remakes? Or the Psycho remake Brad's referring to? It's not all remakes, it's just ones like these. Similar to how not all CGI hits the uncanny valley but occasionally you get a film that does.

I rejected this movie because of the fact of how lifeless it was, how the singers were so bland, how the musical numbers were so poorly staged, how it hit the story beats, but never understood them, gave us two leads that didn't have a single shred of romantic chemistry between them. Believe me, there's no Uncanny Valley here, it's just a valley of awful.

I hate this notion of ''You are too attached to the original, you should see this film as it's on thing'', the thing these movies (specifically the disney live action versions of their animated stuff, but it could be applied to other remakes) don't exist in a vacuum, in fact the only reason they were made it's because of the original film to the point where they copy the way characters look, talk and even song numbers from the cartoon. My point is I feel the film can and should be compared to the original, specially in a case like this where they play on the nostalgia people have to the cartoon to make people go watch it.
@LadyTylerBioRodriguez7 жыл бұрын

I never thought about it but yea, the live-action remakes are kind of like the successor to Disney's direct-to-video sequels: it's something that really doesn't need to exist that's built on brand name recognition, and it's highly unlikely that the filmmakers have more of a vision than advertising the DVD of the original version.

I thought Jungle Book was in need of a remake. I didn't think the original was all that great.
@mastermarkus53077 жыл бұрын
I think the original Jungle Book movie suffered from Walt Disney's serious desire to cater to children, so I do appreciate the "live action" movie being a bit more "adult". Not to mention that unlike this film, the story was quite dramatically changed, especially in that Mowgli wasn't just slipping from song to song like in the cartoon.
@aliciab337 жыл бұрын
Good god, let him have his opinion. Stop trying to "gotcha" him and insisting "IT CHANGED A LOT" and then say it was a line or a non-character's backstory. It's basically shot-for-shot, it's marketed as shot-for-shot. I loved Jungle Book because it changed a huge chunk of it for the better (my childhood was never at peace with the original's ending) while keeping it familiar. I hated Cinderella because it changed parts of it for the worse and came off shallow, with someone sitting on the saturation button. I won't even see BatB because the cgi is nightmare fuel. And Watson as Belle seems like a failure in every aspect, but mostly that cgi tho. WHY.

I have to agree with Brad. They didn't take enough risks to warrant pointing out the changes, so I can't help but feel this was nothing but another cash cow getting milked by Disney. And yes, I know that's a thing that they do, but I don't think they'd be the company that so many love if they hadn't at least had SOME passion and need for innovation in a lot of their films. I hate this trend. Like I thought the plague of Hollywood reboots were the worst thing and then they outright stopped trying and just did a shot by shot remake with tiny additions to try and claim, "but we modernized it!" It's so blatantly lazy.

In terms of adaptations and how/if they're necessary, along with the changes they make, does anyone remember the Cinderella movie with Brandy and Whitney Houston? I was born in 1993 but I remember watching it all the time as a little girl (and I had-- and still do-- have a huge crush on the Prince). How do you guys feel about that one? I think the one that stands out the most to people is the colorblind casting. I love how the casting directors didn't care about race to the point that a black and a white couple can have a Filipino son, and how Cinderella's entire family is mixed. I am also mixed race, my family is full of interracial couples and such so it made me really, really happy to see not only black women being princesses and Fairy Godmothers, but also seeing black women be delicate, feminine, and seeing an Asian man as a love interest. And that's just the racial part of it!

I'm more with Sarah on this one. I thought the remake was charming and the stuff they changed was interesting and added depth to the story. What I *didn't* like was Emma Watson's ultra-autotuned voice. They should have pulled a "My Fair Lady" and brought someone in to dub her songs after the fact. The rest of the musical numbers were really well done, though. (Although I wasn't huge on the fact that this version of the script *specifies* that it all only takes place over a week. In the original, the time frame is more ambiguous, which I think works greatly to the film's advantage.)
@RenaDeles7 жыл бұрын

Since it's established he's not giving up on his daughter and leaving her to her fate, there has to be a reason he hasn't made it to the castle. At least in this film, when Belle returns, Maurice doesn't get over his illness within a couple of hours, he's physically fine but being forced into an asylum.

Honestly, I'd be way more behind Disney's incessant need to milk the cash cow by doing all these remakes IF they remade films that weren't such universal classics. As much as I hated the original Pete's Dragon, that just made me more interested in seeing the remake. I think it would be better if Disney tried to do remakes like The Black Cauldron, Atlantis, Hercules, hell even The Hunchback of Notre Dame, because they still have the name recognition that would bring people to see them but they could be updated and improved upon. But Disney won't do that cause they're more concerned with adding to the cash hoard of Mickey the dragon than they are with actual innovation.

@Metroid4ever7 жыл бұрын
Ugh, I don't want them to remake TLK in live-action. I think the problem Brad's trying to explain is how recent the Renaissance films still are in everyone's minds. Redoing films like Jungle Book aren't bad ideas because many of the older Disney films haven't aged well. Especially during the Dark Ages (shortly after Walt passed). Still, I'd rather see re-releases of the Renaissance era films rather than wasting money to remake something still considered relatively young and fresh. Not to mention, you can't recapture that same feeling the original gave, that same feeling of awe.

The issue is execution. Some of the changes were good, but the biggest problem is that shit like the magic book opened up another plothole (why would she ride the horse back to the village if she can use the book?) The biggest issue was casting, specifically Emma. She was an awful Belle. She went through the motions and completely lacked the genuine sense of wonder that is so characteristic of Belle in the original. Her actions always felt like she was doing them because it happened in the original rather than genuine curiosity, like in the west wing scene.

My reservations are as follows: I hate Emma Watson's acting, I find her to be in the same boat as Kristen Stewart, except instead of underemotive, Watson is overemotive. She should invest in becoming a stage actress, where that kind of thing belongs. Also the Beast's human face- he wasn't beastly enough imo. And the gold dress reminds me of Hermione's atrocious Yule Ball "dress robes", only yellow and with a wider skirt. The first complaint, my distaste for her acting, is the top reason I don't want to see it. Oh, wait- and now searching "Belle" will bring up even MORE pictures of Watson than it did originally.

I saw the film tonight, and I agree with Sarah more than Brad. I think there was enough changed to warrant a watch. For one thing they filled in like _all of the plot holes_. The curse was more recent so there's no issue of age, such as Chip being strangely young or the Prince being too young to be considered responsible for his actions when he was cursed. The prince's crime is not JUST turning away the sorceress, but that he lived in excess and her visit basically proved to her that he deserved the curse. Why does nobody remember the castle of the person who presumably ruled them? Because part of the curse had the citizens not remember the castle, and presumably, since the curse had not been going on for like, ten years or whatever it was in the original it makes more sense as to why people may not have found it. I also think a lot of the characters were more "human", and while it's a personal thing (some people might like "cartoony" better), I like that. For example, LeFou isn't just "the joke character" but one that _does other things!_ I also enjoyed that it sometimes felt like a "big" old-style musical film, like the Rogers and Hammerstein stuff, and I miss the fun and drama of that style. I loved the set and costume design for the most part, just _gorgeous_ clothes. If there was anything that disappointed me, it's that Gaston's song didn't include the "Every last inch of me's covered with hair!" part, and he didn't rip open his shirt (and I could totally see chest hair, he _could've_ without anyone adjusting it), and I was a bit disappointed that while the film was obviously more "musical", they didn't include the song "If I Can't Love Her", which is one I really liked from the stage musical (though I did like the Beast's solo song from later in the movie. It wasn't absolutely outstanding, but it fit well, and I thought it was sweet). Also, a bit of a CGI gripe - the Beast didn't look "really there" sometimes (such as when he's in his bed as Belle cares for him.) I mean, the one made in the _FORTIES_ had a convincing Beast costume! I would've much preferred a costume enhanced with CG rather than have him entirely made up of CG.

I'm looking forward to Pirates 5. I actually really like the first three Pirates Of The Caribbean movies, I felt like it worked really well as a trilogy. The fourth movie on the other hand... that movie killed my love for pirates for about a year. It had a lot of problems honestly, I'll just name the three that bugged me the most: *1.* It had _way_ too much Jack Sparrow. The first three movies always had a good consistent formula where the focus would jump between the three main characters: Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swan. But Pirates 4 didn't have Will or Elizabeth there to give the audience a break from Jack Sparrow, so there was just too much. It felt like the entire movie was following a comic relief. *2.* There came a point where there was so much fantasy, and not a cent of it is impressive by any means. Okay. First movie had cursed men who turn into skeletons. Second movie had a Kraken, and a squid man who has a bunch of fish guys with him, who's beating heart is locked in a treasure chest. Third movie had Davy Jones' locker, but otherwise it only had everything that the second movie had. Now, compare that to THIS movie. Which features: a magic sword that controls a living ship, bottles that contain miniaturized captured ships, zombies, killer mermaids with magical whips, and the fountain of youth. There was so much mystical shit going on that I'm sure I've forgotten about some of it. *3.* It randomly got rid of a lot of the side characters that I had grown to love in the previous films. Remember the two silly British soldiers from the first film? The ones that become pirates by the end of the third film? They're not in the movie. Remember Pintell and Ragetti? The two comic relief characters from the first film, one with the wooden eyeball? They're not in the film. Never mentioned. Remember the bearded mute guy with the smartass parrot? Nope! Not in the movie. Never even mentioned. It just felt so awkward how so many of the previously established characters just sort of disappeared without even a mention. In the end. I'm looking forward to Pirates 5. With Javier Bardem playing the villain, and the return of Will and Elizabeth; I can imagine this being an interesting sit. The one thing that's worrying me is that I hope they tone down the mystical stuff a little, it's a pirate movie: it doesn't need zombies.

I haven't watched the movie yet, so I don't know if it's good or not. But honestly, if Disney is going to remake their old movies (and copy their own style for their new movies), I'd rather have something original. No kidding, when they announced the live action for The Beauty and the Beast, I thought it'd be more like the recent french adaptation of the fairy tail, which is NOTHING like the animated Disney's one. That at least would've been interesting. There's a lot of potential in these remakes, because these movies were already adaptations of tales that have hundreds of different versions, so you can pick and choose what you like or think it's interesting of them and make something new. But no, they'd rather make the exact same movie again, but live action. I understand if people are disappointed by this. I mean, I'd usually say it's not our place to talk since this movie is aimed at kids and not us, but to me it seems like it's trying to appeal to a nostalgic audience rather than a new one, so... Yeah, it feels completely unnecessary.

My main problem with this is that Emma Watson's acting just seems....off. It feels more a retread of Hermoine than Belle

If you want to get technical, Disney released a live action 101 Dalmatians in 1996. They really settled in for the long haul on this live action thing.

At first when I heard they were remaking BATB, I was like Brad. Ever since that last trailer, I've been hyped as hell. I watched it, and I absolutely loved it. Some things I actually thought it did better were Belle, Maurice, LeFou, Belle and Beast's love story, and the Enchantress. 1. Emma killed it as Belle and her somewhat awkward tendencies as well as her obvious frustration made her an even more three-dimensional character. 2. I think 98% of people who've seen the movie agree that Kevin Kline's Maurice was fantastic, so I don't have to explain that one. 3. LeFou, like what Brad and Sarah said, was an actual person and not just a beanbag with a lisp for Gaston to throw around. 4. Making the Beast more sophisticated in how he loved literature just like Belle meant that instead of Belle loving him in a pitiful, "oh-look-he-can't-even-read" manor, the two genuinely had something to bond over. I bought the love story here much more than in the original animation (kudos to the actors for selling the hell out of it). 5. I love how the Enchantress was woven into the story more; in the original, she was mentioned in the beginning, and that's about it. I thought that her being the one to have to lift the curse after she hears Belle say that she loves the Beast makes more sense. The curse said that if the last rose petal fell before someone learned to love him, he would turn back into a human--there's nothing about bringing him back to life in there, so it makes sense that she literally has to bring him to life as well as transform him.

I don't get why Disney is doing these live action remakes if they're not doing anything really different. It's just like "hey look how cool this is with live action and CG." At least Cinderella tried to give more depth to the characters.

Just saw this movie today in 2D (I heard that the 3D version wasn't worth the extra $). While I liked this movie and appreciated the fine tuning (Belle's invention/tool skills, LeFou's caretaker job, the sorceress/hag's role was enlarged), I agree with Brad the even with extra scenes, songs and even dialogue, this film felt the same as the 1991 animated version. I am guessing that Disney feels that they want to recreate their classics to appeal to a generation that prefers CGI or live action, to old style animation. I left this movie pleased, but not impressed or surprised.

The Cinderella movie did pretty much the same stuff as in this one - it was clearly meant to be an updated live action remake of the animated movie, with a few things changed. And like with this, some changes were for the better (Ella's romance with the prince - who actually gets a name! - is MUCH more developed) and some were for the worse (see all of Doug Walker's comments on how this version of Cinderella seems weaker than the animated one). Honestly, I view these live action remakes in the sense of "Well, I don't think they're necessarily better than the originals, but they're something new and pretty and I like that they're now in existence as an option, while we also still have the animated versions to go back to if we'd like". Could this have been a better adaptation of such an iconic movie? Eh, yeah. I'm sure it could have. But it also could have gone much worse, and there were quite a few parts that I enjoyed, which is more than I can say for Joel Schumacher's Phantom of the Opera, for example.

Sarah tends to get a bit... 'internety' when she disagrees with Brad. Really aggressive and kinda, I dunno, pissed off, as if she's taking it personally that Brad didn't like it. I know I saw an argument like this in two other of theirs. Though it is nice seeing these when people don't agree. I understand it though, as I have certain friends who can get unfriendly in their disagreeing sometimes too. XD I agree with him though. It is way too similar.

Gonna be totally honest, If I was one of the villagers I'd 100% be on Gaston's side about killing The Beast. Like, he's a massive lion/wolf/bear/bison/boar/gorilla monster who can kill an entire pack of wolves with his bear hands and has kidnapped multiple people, you'd have to be insane to not want him dead.

@doctordoom857 жыл бұрын
I'll see this one and may like it, but yeah this one didn't feel necessary. At least with Jungle Book, the original animated film has some problems in that while there are some good songs and a few funny moments the characterization of the cast is fairly flat which last year's remake improved on greatly (and geezus, live-action Shere Khan doesn't fuck around). Same with Cinderella, I liked how Cinderella and the Prince's romance was better developed as was Cinderella and the Prince's relationships with each of their fathers. With this one though, sure the animated Beauty and the Beast isn't perfect but it's definitely overall a really solid film that holds up so I don't think it needed to be tackled again compared to some of the others one that got remade.

Lady (I don't know your name), Disney ADVERTISED this as pretty much a shot-by-shot remake. So Dude is right. It definitely felt like a half-assed recycling of the script with deleted-for-good-reason scenes added back in. Fans generally want a remake to either remain faithful to the original (like Cinderella) or to be so different that it's its own story (Pete's Dragon). An almost-literal carbon copy is just a rip-off that has no reason to exist.
