They could have completely dropped the "Gods being taller than humans" thing because the Egyptian gods were never portrayed as being larger, so it seems like they could've saved a lot of money just not doing that at all. An actually good use of special effects that they left out would've been making the gods part animal like they were usually portrayed - making them turn into transformers doesn't count!

I still find it hard to believe this movie cost 140 million dollars. A chunk of that went into the CGI, but I'm convinced that the rest either went into some secret drug-fueled, 4-day weekend orgy or someone behind the scenes pulled some major financial shenanigans that would make Golan & Globus blush.

Its kind of funny that Sarah mentions The Librarian movies (the first one is a lot of fun) because if I read his IMDB right, I think Ryan was an assistant on the third one around the same time he was helping out with the TV show Leverage. Really cool. You should ask him about that, Brad.

Sigh, maybe one day Hollywood will understand that, like practical effects, CGI is a tool and not something to rely on to do EVERYTHING.
@kladams707
@kladams707 8 жыл бұрын
I'm OK with CGI as a main effect. It can be just another artistic choice vs practcal effects. But you still need something to support the choice. I could tell Gods of Egypt was going to suck but I'm looking forward to The Jungle Book.
@mastermarkus5307
@mastermarkus5307 8 жыл бұрын
+kladams707 I saw a trailer for The Jungle Book when I went to see Zootopia, and I don't think they made it look good. It's like they tried to market it as an action movie. The CGI did look rather nice, but at the moment I'm a bit worried about how the pacing / storytelling is going to be. Also, I'm dreading the inevitable "WTF Disney, why you ruin my childhood movie?" comments from viewers.
@GambeTama
@GambeTama 8 жыл бұрын
What's funny is that I saw the trailer for this 3 times in a week. The first time, I thought "This looks alright, an Avengers-esque action romp in 'Ancient Egypt,' I could get behind this." The second time, I thought "The dialogue sounds really plain and I have no idea what is going on. I'm not so sure about this" The third time, I thought "The effects here look like garbage. This film is going to blow." The process of decay was staggering to me.

The very first poster I saw for this movie had what I could only assume was a robotic sphinx roaring fighting a robotic Anubis. I truly thought it was for a fifth Michael Bay Transformer film. And I said out loud to my friend, "I thought that his reboot already did an Egypt-themed thing." And she goes, "No, this is something completely different." That kind of made me sad, because I was looking forward to laughing at more Bay-fueled ridiculousness. I mean, the sphinx even had the glowing blue eyes and Anubis had the red eyes! I really thought it was some sort of side story for that whole Fallen thingy!

It sounds so bad it could be great - so I guess I could well check it out. And if I got it right, it's directed by the guy who made Dark City ? WTF ?! This is such a solid and very underrated movie, the situation is mind-boggling here. Concerning Cleopatra (since you brought it up), it actually made its budget back but ages after it came out. But then again, its budget was astronomical - you could make at least one movie with the money that went into Liz Taylor's costumes alone.

I had a feeling this movie was going to be awful. I saw the trailer and I wasn't impressed(the CGI looked awful, and unrefined) and the acting subpar. This is a shame because I love Alex Proyas. His work on the Crow is amazing, and I do like Dark City and IRobot. But even with me without seeing it, it looked awful. What's sad is apparently this was a major passion project of Proyas. And knowing him, he definitely saw the trees and not the entire forest, despite the cool concept. As Proyas knows how to execute large scale concepts and make the characters feel more intimate. What's worse is that he went online and bashed critics. While not the same as Josh Trank, that's a big no no. Yes, it sucks to see your movie being torn apart. But you complaining isn't going to make things better or change people's minds. In fact, it will make the situation worse. Overall, I don't think Proyas' career will be destroyed(much like Trank's or David Fincher's. Heck the latter made a recovery), but Proyas did take a hit. And to get personal, my respect for him has gone down just a bit. Overall, great video as always.

I feel this is going to be one of those movies that gets played in the background of a party. You know, as a kind of noise filler. For the host that doesn't want to get one of those lightshow things you get from the back of a Spencers. I remember back in the day I went to a party and for some reason the host was playing Deathstalker in the background. Nobody was actively watching it, it was just playing. I've never seen that movie before this party. I get to the party just as the mud-wrestling scene starts. I was maybe ten or eleven. It was baffling, and years later it was still baffling after finally getting around to watching the whole thing.

+Banter Board Nobody said anything when these guys played ancient Greeks in "300" or will smith played an Egyptian god in "Hancock", and having dark skin does not make you Egyptian either, you would still be an actor playing a role. To be authentic as possible, you would have to get actors from Egypt and have subtitles in the movie if they didn't already speak good english, and you would have to crack the pyramids open to see if the Gods are willing to be part of the fantasy movie.

The director threw a huge hissy fit of the all the bad reviews. He said things like "NOTHING CONFIRMS RAMPANT STUPIDITY FASTER than reading reviews of my own movies. I usually try to avoid the experience--but this one takes the cake. Often, to my great amusement, a critic will mention my past films in glowing terms, when at the time those same films were savaged, as if to highlight the critic's flawed belief of my descent into mediocrity. You see, my dear fellow FBookers, I have rarely gotten great reviews… on any of my movies, apart from those by reviewers who think for themselves and make up their own opinions." and "Lock a critic in a room with a movie no one has even seen and they will not know what to make of it, because contrary to what a critic should probably be, they have no personal taste or opinion, because they are basing their views on the status quo. None of them are brave enough to say, 'Well I like it' if it goes against consensus. Therefore they are less than worthless." Check out his facebook page. It's hilarious.

+Rixizu Oh yeah other great movies get great reviews all the time. Of course he is the special misunderstood snowflake that is "misunderstood".

+Rixizu Goddammit. That's the saddest thing - when a director can't recognize that they made a bad movie, or even that their movie just _had flaws_.

The Wolverine Origins videogame is pretty good actually, certainly better than the movie. Ghost Rider also had a pretty good videogame

Speaking of this movie looking like a video game adaptation, What's your opinion on several of the video game movie adaptations that are coming? Hopefully it won't be as preachy as some of the waves of christian movies that came out prior but I hope there's a Kirk Cameron Saving Christmas version of that.
