I won't lie; I hated this movie when I saw it in theaters. But recently rewatching it, while I still am not a fan(more mixed), I can see why people like this film. For one thing, I'm happy it used the actual Facebook, KZbin and all the other stuff we use. I understand many films cannot use that due to licensing/copyright fees, but this was a nice touch. And I won't lie; the computer gimmick was interesting. Particularly, I liked the scenes with the main character typing one thing and then erasing it. And I'll admit I agree with Doug Walker that the buildup for a lot of the scares was excellent. Very good use of tension. But in all honestly, everything else sucks. The actual kills look so stupid. They should have gone for more mysterious off deaths. It would have fit the tone of the movie. Also, the characters suck. Not one person is decent. And I get it. It's to showcase how teenagers suck and how Cyberbulling is not cool. Heck, I remember once being Cyberbullied, but that was a long time ago and I ignored it. But why not have at least one decent character. Just one. It would have balanced out the amount of stupidity these characters display. And the ending, while is fine, is just another goddam jump scare. Seriously, Blumhouse and many horror films need to stop doing this. It looses its value. If anything, the scare is not necessarily due to anything horrific or thought-provoking. Rather, it surprises you. So, yes. I agree. It's a cool concept, but marred up horrible characters, and terrible payoff on other wise excellent tension.

@inlovewithJLT8 жыл бұрын
Alexander Freeman I'm a teacher and I know kids like this. It's easy to say they were just plain assholes but honestly, who hasn't gotten with their friends and talked shit? Who can say they never kept secrets from friends? I know we all like to say "I would never x, y, or z" but if we really examine ourselves or ask those around us what they thought of us in our youth the honest results would probably be very humbling. The only character who I can't remember caring for was the first guy who died. The rest, at least in some way, showed humanity either in their feelings of remorse, betrayal, or fear.
@SharkAlien668 жыл бұрын
inlovewithJLT My only issue is I don't believe the film set up any of the characters as people I could bring myself to care about. Not that there is anything wrong with your interpretation of the film. It's just to me, I feel like a Horror film really has to get you to invest in the characters in order for their demise to have any impact. In Unfriended I never felt that. I don't believe they were ever characterized beyond shallow stock Horror movie teenagers with the added benefit off airing dirty laundry and bickering amongst friends.
@alexanderfreeman34068 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but you're just a shitty person if you can't say you wouldn't do what these kids did. Honestly, this movie wasn't THAT bad. Yeah it was clearly low budget, but that was kind of the point wasn't it? I mean, I know the concept isn't exactly new, the whole ghost in the machine thing, but the delivery method via just watching through a girl's laptop screen was an interesting direction to go in. Really, I think these guys are missing the point when it comes to the characters in the movie. The fact that none of them are good people, that all of them are assholes and douchebags, was kind of the point. While some you might be able to point your finger at immediately and say, "Asshole," there were a couple that you couldn't do that with, which offered a bit of impact when it turned out there were just as bad as the rest. I mean, the lead character initially comes off as cute and likable and while she might seem a little shallow she was someone you could root for... until it turns out she's got just as much dark shit in her closet as the others do. I know this is almost a dirty word these days, but it did a fair job of subverting our expectations about one or more of the characters. There was no 'hero' or 'heroine' in this movie like you might expect. They were all bad people. Plus, the deaths were fairly inventive and the actors did a good job of acting like they were completely out of control of their own bodies when the ghost forced them to kill themselves. When the boyfriend headbutted the butcher knife and impaled himself through the eyeball, the way they shot and executed that death was pretty good in my opinion. I will admit that the final death where the girl closes the laptop and we get the ghost jump scare did suck, but it was the last five seconds so it didn't bother me all that much. Was this a great horror movie? No, of course not, but I really didn't think it was as terrible as these guys make it out to be. I was entertained by it and it wasn't a rehash of something Hollywood has done ten times before. Isn't that kind of what counts these days with movies?
@troin39256 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the only thing I really liked about this movie was the gimmick, everything else was garbage. I haven’t finished this video yet at the time I’m typing this so I don’t know if you bring this movie up, but Unfriended’s gimmick wasn’t even unique to _that_ film alone, it was already done before in another horror film a few years prior to its release called The Den which amusingly star’s jumpscare girl from Smiley. I haven’t finished The Den yet but I’m starting over since it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it. As far as I can tell, The Den doesn’t have anything supernatural, it involves a serial killer, which already makes me interested since it seems like they’re trying to go for realism. The film doesn’t take place in real time which gives the filmmakers more freedom to have the film’s events flow more naturally. One thing that Unfriended does slightly better than The Den is having convincing desktop visuals. Lazy editing aside (Skype getting mute for no reason, characters teleporting, etc.), Unfriended legitimately looks like it was recorded desktop footage rather than post-production effects. This is just a nitpick that I have with The Den so it’s not awful nor does it affect my opinion of the film (at least, what little I saw of it), but when I watch it, I can’t shake the feeling that it’s not all that authentic looking. Mouse cursors move in a robotic way as if it was a commercial, the way text messages (and possibly some websites in general, my memory is getting fuzzy with this part), appear look too much like animations.
@crimsonblade254 жыл бұрын
Not going to lie I somewhat liked this movie. It had a few issues but what movie doesn’t. I will say it’s have been far better if the guy with the gun would have been killed with the sword that was against the wall. You have a prop like a sword and you don’t use it? Very disappointing. Also it would have been a good twist if at the end it turned out there was no ghost and it was just the father of the dead girl that was killing these people.
