So, I actually went through an emotionally abusive relationship. And while it's not quite full on abusive in the movie, there were just certain things Clay does and says that's just eerie. The way he wants to control the pace of the relationship, control the extent of it and what they do, and the whole box she made actually bugged me a lot because it was solely to cater to him when he's shown no interest in really catering to her. The nail polish line freaking floored me. Forcing others to basically pay for his own past mistakes, this whole movie- and bare in mind I'm pretty conservative on my own- was a freaking horror movie made more horrifying by the way they portray it with a "happy" ending.

I don't know, and I'm not going to consider possibilities, because that would be giving this plot way more attention and thought than it deserves. +fahd s Truly "chivalrous" or "good" guys would just be able to behave themselves around women. If they don't want a reputation as someone who sleeps around (fear of that rep is why this sort of thing is taught)... then they should be modest and decent human beings, and not give reason to think that's what they do. Because, as you've said, this is just too extreme (in fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it would hurt this Clay guy's reputation way more if people heard "He forced me out of my own home because he's a religious pansy nutcase" than if they heard "He came over and fixed my stove.").

I think Cinema Snob is right in saying there's a happy medium in the Christian response to "Fifty Shades of Grey." I can understand how more conservative people are unsettled at the way some modern movies and TV glorify cheap sex and superficial examples of love, but probably the worst way to react to that is to try and teach people that censorship is the way to go. Rules, rules rules. NO sex. NO kissing. NO dating. NO arguing. One of my top five favorite films is "You've Got Mail" with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. You realize - there's no sex and only one single kiss between the two main characters in the entire film, yet it's not because they made rules or even had dating guidelines in their heads. They legitimately developed a strong bond through communication and an unlikely friendship that led them to a place of romantic connection. I like seeing movies like that, which herald true, genuine connections between people.
@spiderboy438 жыл бұрын
+mintyhobbit But who doesn't like seeing those movies? Besides the people that made this movie.
@Flaris8 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. "You've Got Mail" is basically what this movie should have tried to be. That is how you build a good relationship and it doesn't focus on sex. Yet it feels so much more solid and well done than this horrible movie. They didn't have dumb rules in that movie, the relationship just built up over time and it worked. The guy staring in this movie should be embarrassed that he made such a horrible thing and tried to make it sound good. Nothing in this movie was old fashioned outside of the bad parts of old fashioned. You know overly controlling and not giving women any say in what they do. The MC in this movie is a monster.

I went to a private christian college for a time and at that school there were rules about men and women being alone with each other in the same apartment or dorm or whatever. At least in that place, it made sense. This was meant to control the horndog college kids and help them avoid the temptation to fuck. It didn't work usually. Certainly didn't work for my girlfriend at the time and I. But in this movie, we're talking about grown ass adults; a 40-something year old man and a 30-something year old woman! It really isn't right in the context of this movie. This sounds awful. I belong to a church with some pretty conservative ideas about marriage, sexuality, and fidelity, but this is beyond the pale.

What gets me is that religious people assume homosexuality doesn’t exist until it’s a choice. Men and women can’t be alone together because the guy won’t be able to help himself and might not give her consent. But 2 guys or 2 girls isn’t a problem. I can’t imagine how many people had their first coming out or gay experience at a religious retreat. I’m straight, but I’m also not blind. If religion works for you, fine. But if I can mock the very thing that ruined my life, I will. Nothing personal. I just gave up things that hurt me.

Usually, PureFlix movies are watchable because they're guilty pleasures, and you can laugh at most of them. Then there's Old Fashioned. I literally just finished the DVD, and it was more cringey than funny.
@Y2Ksnowglobe7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I can attest to Old Fashioned being meant to be the christian counter to Fifty Shades, of course it fails horribly. Both movies, from a feminist perspective have the exact same problems. Both involve a girl meeting a guy who disregards what the girl wants in a relationship to impose his non-conventional ideal relationship onto her. In the end, Fifty Shades becomes the film with the better message because (excluding sequels) Ana acknowledges that her relationship isn't addressing her own needs and actually leaves! This movie was trying to be a rebuttal to 50 shades, but in the end, just became the Pure Flix parallel. But this reveals the problem with how the evangelical movement prioritizes relationship qualities. It's not wrong to refuse to meet your partner in the middle so that you both are getting your relational needs met, it's only wrong if you have extra/pre-marital sex.
@margaretgibbs66732 жыл бұрын
Summed it up really well. Evangelical purity culture standards of sexual ethics and healthy relationships aren't so much about consent and boundaries and power dynamics and who's getting their needs met equally, as much as "are we doing the correct gender roles" and "is Bad Sinful Sex involved".

I work at a theater so I saw the poster for this and even a few clips of it while inspecting the auditorium it was in. It actually looked kinda cute and I do like the idea of a movie that promotes chivalry and good manners in a relationship. ....So disappointed to see that is NOT at all what this movie is about. Instead it's basically shaming anyone who's in a BASIC relationship by claiming that dating is only an excuse to have sex. Also I had no idea it was religious propaganda until this review. The poster gave NO indication of that. It had even won a film festival award! Which one I don't know so that really shoulda tipped me off XD

I think the dating thing is perfectly reasonable. I didn't want to waste my time on hookups and relationships that don't mean anything either. Some people want commitment.
@lonewolfgamingplus3794 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, I rather date someone and get to know them. That's the reason of dating, you got find the meaning in someone. Commitment is another ballpark.

I'd sit through this Abomination of a movie if only for the chance to see Clay get the shit kicked out of him by The Kerry King looking Bodyguard after screwing the Stripper out of her tips...too bad it never happens. For some reason,if I ever watch this shitstorm I will Rifftrax the Hell out of it with some friends and a Lot -Read volumes- of Drink....(and I don't drink much....) Good video,Brad.

I wonder how many people at my old job tried returning this movie. I explained it to some degree to customers and they looked at me in utter confusion.

I have seen so few religious movies and some of these recent midnight screenings I've seen have made me quite thankful of that fact and I feel like the snob is like jumping on holy hand grenades for us all to save us from this kind of tripe. thanks snob I'm just going to watch Jesus Christ vampire hunter again i just found on utube and is just enough religion for me i think lol check it out.

Brad reminds me, strongly, of a coworker I used to work with. Similar looks and mannerisms that all these videos make me feel like I'm back in Japan talking with said coworker. That aside, this movie did not execute the "old fashioned" theme very well.

Clay's an atheist? Also, I got so annoyed when Christian's say that atheists eat babies. Don't knock it if you haven't tried it.

Sounds like the tapes were more like that scene from "Fame" than Girls Gone Wild. Still not as bad as say, "Facial Abuse".

Honestly, I think this would have been how my dad probably wished he'd met my mom. Although, falling off a motorcycle because you're trying to be Peter Fonda in Easy Rider (he was the furthest thing from a hippie) and ending up meeting his wife, who was literally his nurse, probably worked really well for him too. Obviously she left because of all the abuse, after over 20 years. But he even got a girl to break up with me by constantly telling her whenever she went into the kitchen to see my mom that she was "in training." By that he meant having spaghetti thrown at her because he hated that, and because he didn't get his tea with dinner. Timing was everything.

I was raised Christian and I have turned from it and I have huge hate for Christianity. Don't get me wrong though, I've scrolled through the posts of this section and I have seen both "Christian's" and--in the word's of Terry Pratchett--religious people whom believe in people and I approve of the latter very much.

That Hillsong movie actually had a bit of a distributor juggling act. Back in 2014, Warner Bros. was set to release it but then Warner dropped it in early January 2015 before it was picked up by Relativity Media for a 2015 release, but then Relativity got bankrupt and dropped it, anong other movies. Now,according to Box Office Mojo, the Hillsong movie is set to be released by the Patron Saint of Crappy Faith Movies aka Pure Flix in September.
