Worse is, She was the main vocalist and could absolutely sing very beautifully but then she barely sing live anymore, even jiyeon who has no foundation in singing was more stable than her, not bcs jiyeon has a great technique or anything but bcs soyeon just didnt bother to sing.

The training period is so rigourous that they can't pursue an education, even as a backup, often pursuing college degrees that have little to no use in helping them find a stable job. The idol world is such a high risk high reward system. Their careers are expected to be short lived and if they make it, they make all the money they can in that short time and invest that in to ventures that will hopefully sustain them for the rest of their lives. Otherwise they are doomed. Either they go back to university to study and get a job or are left working different part time jobs, trying to make ends meet.

I saw a clip, it was from Hello Counselor. There was one girl who complained that her boyfriend or brother (I forgot) was body shaming her - calling her "fat" though she has an average body. F(x) was also there. One host asked the guy that what's his standard weight to look skinny and if there was one of the members who think has a great body. Then he body shamed Sulli because she looks fat to him. (She looks skinny to me) After that, not sure if that was one of the reasons why she lost weight but damn.. the body standard in Korea is too unrealistic. Seriously.

It's weird, being from the u.s., to bear about things that are considered scandalous in Korea. Going to a club, smoking (although unhealthy, not scanadlous,) dating, drinking, wearing sexy clothing, having adult fun of any kind. Those are all things that are very regular occurrences in our culture. In fact, it is sometimes weird to not see famous people going out & everyone generally wears their own style now, which for many is sexy, revealing clothing. It's unfortunate that South Korean idols are expected to maintain such impossible standards when they are just people like the rest of us & they too need a release from reality sometimes. As a fan, I don't feel like this is as standard today in kpop as in the past, do you? I still think restrictions on idol relationships is overly harsh & unnecessary, as everyone needs love. However, fans that are more aware of current Korean's feelings please tell me, is there still the same stigma around drinking & clubbing as before?
@Butterfly_towards_jannah3 жыл бұрын

@lkim3933 жыл бұрын
Korea is still a very much conservative society, despite what kpop would have you think. The vast majority of Korean people still have views on "scandalous" behavior akin to what America thought, say, back in the seventies, which makes sense if you think about it. It's important to remember that the South Korean republic was established less than 100 years ago, and Korea's rapid rise from 3rd-world to 1st-world explains some things about the current culture. It really depends on the region you're in: places like Hongdae and Gangnam have a very lively drinking and clubbing culture, but in less urbanized (and youthful) regions, usually outside of Seoul, you probably won't find hemlines as short or crazy hair colors. Just like some small-town midwestern cities in the US would consider clubbing and drinking to be particularly wild in comparison to the LA nightlife, the same is in Korea, just on a different scale. Generally I feel as if the new generation is gaining a much more liberal view of "fun" (as the nightlife is usually centered around college towns, Hongdae being an example) and Korea will continue to change. I don't live in Korea, so some of this might be a misperception, but this is the sense I get from visiting and consuming Korean media.

It feels very early to mid 2000s USA to me.
@MG-mq3zf2 жыл бұрын
I hear that many of these restrictions are b/c the companies behind these idols want the fans to "project" whatever they want onto the idols and imagine themselves being with them in a romantic way. It's hard for fans to imagine themselves with the idols if the idols date or have lives outside of carefully planned songs/ads.
