i think something that should have been mentioned but wasn't is the fact that hyuna was only 17 when she debuted as a soloist, meaning that not only was she underage, but that she was starring in a music video she herself wouldn't have been able to watch. i often think that netizens babying their idols and not allowing them to mature is ridiculous, but guess what: she was a minor, she wasn't supposed to be "mature", thus cube should have never put her in that situation to begin with. in that sense, people had all the right to be outraged, not at hyuna, but at cube.

I would love to see a deep dive into Global Icon (GI). Their group was such a roller coaster. They had a unique concept, their company did their best to say that they were going to have a "global debut," but just uploaded their song to different digital platforms in different countries, then two members sued the company for mismanagement, the group went through line up changes, and completely re-did their image....it was a whole mess....

I know this will probably NEVER happen, but we need another group like piggy dolls again. They were so talented and beautiful, and I loved their concept. I wanna see plus sized girl groups with powerful voices on stage again! As a plus sized girl myself, that would make me happy to see. Piggy dolls shouldn’t have had to lose weight to fit the beauty standards in Korea. They were beautiful just the way they were. I just learned about Lana & have been weirdly fascinated by her. It's definitely an interesting issue - unlike Kaachi and EXP Edition, she did go through the training system and learn the Korean language. She also technically *is* Asian - she might be Caucasian but she was born in the easternmost part of Russia, near Japan. The main issues with her, I think, were that her debut song was poorly mixed (it's actually kind of a bop but god the mixing is awful) and that her live vocals were kind of weak - which could have been nerves, or it could've been that maybe she needed a little more training in that area, who knows. But obviously these things weren't really her fault - her company, while small, could have handled things a lot better. Maybe things might have also been better if she debuted in a group instead of solo. Anyway, I'm glad she seems to be doing well for herself in the Chinese market.
@Lifunia3 жыл бұрын
I remember when Piggy Dolls debuted. My first thought was, why did they have to give the girls that name? Is it because they're not skinny enough to fit the korean beauty standard? I then became happy to see that Korea might finally open up a bit towards different body shapes.. but boy was I wrong. Their story is really sad :/
@camila-qj9ch3 жыл бұрын
as a queer person, i'm not sure if you could say a real person is "queerbaiting", because while of course companies would do anything to appeal to a broader public, we're talking about real people here. we don't know if the artists in question are actually queer or not, especially in an environment so conservative like sk, so I don't think is fair to treat the self-expression of an artist/group at the same level of the writing of a fictional character, because again, they are real human beings.
@chenmae97473 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but assuming they are straight is just as bad, unless they come out. (Which would probably happen, never.) That they are queer or straight we don’t know. Like they are lgbtq idols, they exist.
@TMJW3 жыл бұрын
Same, it’s very messy when you’re talking about real people. I’m more bothered by the fanservice aspect - if this is just to titillate a straight audience, I’m uncomfortable with that, then it really does make queerness a performance for the appeal of a straight person’s fetish

2:39 the way Red Velvet and OnlyOneOf are my 2 ult groups- 💀 But let me say OnlyOneOf actually portrayed LGBT couples! I don't know about that. As a gay man the video made me a bit uncomfortable. It felt kinda "sexy gay men aimed at a female audience" tbh. Like it's sexy, which is fine. It never felt fetishy to me. But the video definitely felt aimed at women and not gay men. Same thing goes for the Red Velvet video. Weirdly the best kpop video i've seen with this concept is Chuu's Heart Attack. But it seems strange to me, why are they not allowed to be a solo artist? If a (for example) Japanese, Chinese or x people join an group then it's cool and ok but if they become a solo artist then it's suddenly horror and forbidden?? (Without joining a group -> they start their careers alone) I get that it that if you go too far (,but how can that happen?) that in a case you might call something Kpop which isn't. But how do you know what Kpop actually is? For me it's a person who writes song that have at least some lyrics in Korean and who can write a song in any other language but I think that it would become strange if you would call somebody a Korean Idol, when the only Korean thing was the one sentence in that one song. I agree on that last comment about Lana, let the korean market decide if they want her or not. - Being fat and being on tv promotes unhealthy lifestyle? what kind of bullshit was that?!

The Lana one pisses me off. I'm tired of international fans being privileged and being assholes for no reason and thinking they have a right and speak over actual Koreans and Koreans who live in South Korea. There is NOTHING wrong with people of ANY race being in K-Pop. As long as they have talent, went through the trainee system, speak Korean, and respect other artists and the culture, there is nothing wrong with it. And I'm Korean myself (I'm biracial). Lana can make good music. And as a singer, she is a good vocalist. And she went through the trainee system.

Honestly I think none of these idols deserved the backlash exept from the queerbaters. People shouldn't be criticised for looks in a music industry, people should be able to do the concepts they want and sexualising idols is gross on its own so like why not kiss on stage. I also think that K-pop should be able to include non Asian people, since K-pop literally only means Korean pop, pop in Korea, usually sang mostly in Korean. If you follow the training and learn how to speak the language I don't think there should be any problems with it.

The first comment about the queer-coding is really on point, coming out, be it in korea or in any part of the world, comes with the risk of being insulted, denigrated, sexualized and harassed, specially in the internet and specially by cishet people, sexual and gender identities are not a costume to put on when you want to get money from a minority that is desperate to get some representation of themselves, and will applaud anyone who give us some attention, even when it is only in a fetishizing way because we have no other way to see ourselves in the media, even if they are honest about it, it doesn't make it any better

The QODES situation is a rough one, because the video for LALALA definitely falls more into sexualizing same sex female relationship, but we don't know how ok the women of the group were ok with using queerbaiting. The group seems to be talented, they even got to heavily influence the choreography among some other stuff according to a Instagram live they made, BUT their idea of "representation" was not very good, or helpful representation outside of some same sex people touching up on each other. Generally I find their other mv or as they call them "Quest" LIKE YOU, a much better depiction of a relationship between two women, be it platonic or romantic. They seem like a talented group of women so hopefully the LALALA discussion isn't the only thing they are remembered for, and leads to an end of their group.

With onlyoneof their song libido isn't baiting anything. "Libido, which means sex drive or the desire for sex, varies dramatically from one person to the next. It also varies depending on a person's preferences and life circumstances. Libido can be affected by medical conditions, hormone levels, medications, lifestyle and relationship problems." It has nothing to do with being gay. They're showing a strong desire for sexual action. Also we have no idea if any of these people are gay, Lesbian, bi ect. If they actually were who are we to criticize them.

I hate the hypocrites criticizing piggy doll for "promoting unhealthy lifestyles" when your typical idor literally has to starve themselves, get phasic surgery and do training with almost no rest Idc what anyone says they are cute and I hope that they are doing well and don't let the haters get to them
