Cleaning this DISGUSTING fan, covered in pet hair

This thing was absolutely CAKED! Before you even say it, yes, I could have taken more time and gotten that thing 100% clean and looking brand new. This was just a quick little de-hair that I wanted to get on video, because ... damn.

What I find helps with removing cat hair is wearing an old pair of rubber gloves, damped them, then run your hands across the fan, duvet, whatever. The hair sticks to the gloves.

I have three cats who bring me much joy, but it also brings me much extra work, like hoovering and polishing every day. It also means deep cleaning, like moving furniture much more often. For me they are worth it. I wipe my ceiling fans down weekly and always have to wash the cloth I use. Cats have fur, which is what makes them so soft and cuddly, and either you love them and deal with it, or you don't!

A small wire brush might take off the hair that is stuck to the guard. I appreciate your videos so much and your sense of humor so much more. Using your example, I purged my apartment. I can keep it clean and no longer fear inviting someone in. I have a storage unit that has about a dozen large totes in it - that is my next project - just 2 totes at a time. I'm finally able to enjoy a bit of relaxation, reading, and sewing. Miss Minnie, my cat, enjoys your videos also.

I'm sure this was way before you were born but we had a traveling salesperson who would come by our home weekly to sale their wares. Often, we would have an old box fan that no longer worked and they would knock a few dollars off our purchase for the old fans. He would take them home clean all the pet fur, dust, and dander out of the blades and motors and they would run like new. That doesn't happen a lot with the new fans today but back in the 60's & 70's things were built to last at least 5 or 10 years. I've learned from that time period and now we try to keep the fan motors and blades clear of dust, fur, and dander so we can maximize their lifespan.

I always pick the big chunks off by hand & take the rest of the pieces outside & use a whisk broom on them. Then I take them to my bathroom, put them in the shower, squirt scrubbing bubbles on them, walk away & come back in 5 minutes to rinse them off. Then I shake the water off & put them on the porch to dry. I cleaned 4 in 15-20 minutes using this method. Scrubbing bubbles also work great on trash cans that are gross inside & out. Spray them, walk away, rinse & dry... no scrubbing! I DO need to add that my fans can be completely dismantled unlike the one you're cleaning in the video. Great job! 👍

I have cleaned a few nasty fans in my lifetime. Generally, I would vacuum the outside first, then carefully unscrew things and soak it in the bath tub, scrub it. Sometimes I would put it in the top rack of the dishwasher separately from you know regular dishes, and do the rinse cycle as well or the whole cycle to get any extra nastiness off of it. All the fans that I have cleaned were basically plastic except for the motor and the motor wouldn’t go in the dishwasher or get soaked in the tub obviously L O L. I also used to dismantle the inside of my refrigerator once a year, soak it, the shelves that is, and then put it in the dishwasher, all the pieces that could fit and clean it that way at one point in my life I had a children’s plastic pool on the deck and when my kids got older, I saved it anyway because I used that pool on the deck to soak things that were from the kitchen or appliance parts that could be submerged. I would just use Dawn dishwashing detergent and really hot water and let it soak and then take it out and I wouldn’t even have to scrub it. I just have to wipe and rinse it, and it would come out really clean.

I too have cats and fans. I highly recommend a vacuum hose and brush attachment to start. Then a washcloth usually. Helps contain the dust and fur floaties

13 indoor cats....and our fan does a great job of sucking up any loose fur. Our trick of removing it is to lay the fan down and go over it with the vacuum cleaner...easy peezy. Then take it apart for a more thorough cleaning. (at least this is how my wife explained how she cleans the fan....I don't do housework) I'm one of those filthiest of the filthy husbands who had my wife get out of bed (twice!!!) to show me how to run the washer and vacuum cleaner after her chemo treatments. Hey....I tried!

Forgive another tip! If you wipe the metal mesh of the fan using a used (I wouldn’t waste a new one) fabric softener sheet, it will grab the lint and fur etc. and drag it right off as you wipe it.👍 I think you are a super human being!

Using an air compressor is pretty satisfying in these situations. Mom uses it for everything; cleaning her vacuum filters every time, and every dang little thing (despite her home being practically a hoarded (but rather clean) house.

Having my own personal Summer to deal with because of being 72, I have a fan in every room (5) and add 3 cats into the mix and the fans get cleaned once a month, a complete breakdown AND scrub down. We all breathe better and it keeps me from gacking up a hairball because we share the bed!.......🤭That's just how WE ROLL over here......

Yeah, few people think to clean fans. Pet hair aside, it is unsanitary to have a filthy fan circulating dirt. If you can, one good way to clean them is to take them outside and use the leaf blower on them.

I have one of those fans and they attract more dust and fluff than any of my other fans. I can't unscrew the small screws/nuts, seem to have gotten very stuck on so I've had to try and clean it with skewers. Great job to you as always.

💨I prefer BOX fans because I can attach a furnace air FILTER to the back of them. I use fiberglass ones because they barely restrict air movement, but at least they keep the pet hair and bigger dirt out. They'll still get dirty, but not like the fan in the video. I like to tape 2 filters of 1" thickness together and prefer the ones from Menards. I tried using pleated ones, but they restricted the air so much that there was hardly any breeze. Ok if you want just an air cleaner.

I always attach dryer sheets to the inside of my A/C vents to catch my 2 cat-household hair. it saves on the a/c filters and smells nice...

I have the same hair issue in my fan from just two cats. If I don't want to take the screws out of the fan I use a cheap small paint brush like in a paint by numbers box. It allows you to twirl the hair in big bunches that you can pull or push through the grills. You can clean the blades free from hair also. It does a pretty good job. I prefer the wash and wipe, but if there are issues with taking the grill on and off, this works fine.

I used to work for little Debbie’s snack cakes on the cleaning crew, we would cover the motor with a trash bag and wash it down with a water hose, as long as it has time to dry before plugging it in, it will be fine. That’s how I do mine now.

Use vinegar/water on the blades to help prevent dust-fur collection. It helped with my cats. (It might help on the cage part too but that sounded more metal, vinegar could erode?) My 2c 🙂 (cute fur babies 🐾💕)

I have a long hair chihuahua and have to take my fan apart every 2 weeks to clean it. It looks just like this fan. Yuck! I will say that I brush it first but I do have to clean it in the sink too the stuff just doesn't want to come off to my satisfaction without soup & water. Thanks for sharing. The fan/fan grate part of the floor fan in my room looks like that after a couple of years of hair and dust buildup. I used Fantastik to clean it, since we have a lot of it. I think I cleaned the parts in various places, room for the vacuuming part; well since the vacuum I use is in here, outside to clean the heavy stuff, and the bathroom to finish up. I choose the bathroom since that's the dirtiest place anyway. I call myself a human cat with the way I shed hair and it goes everywhere (I think for the places where I question "how did that get there" the spiders probably dragged it up to make it a part of their webs). It's so good when the fan is clean, it also stays that way for a very long time, I think I cleaned it months ago and it's still clean.

You sir need a steam cleaner! I would have run the vacuum over it with the bristle brush then give it a good steam. That would save you some elbow grease and leave time for other projects. You do an amazing job on all your cleanings. Your wife is one lucky lady!! Not too many men who clean out there.

Recently got these super-cool silicone gloves (at Wallfart) with little pointy cones all over the fingers & palms for scrubbing nasty things - next to clean freak, the best purchase ever! Shedding cats LOVE to sit behind a fan and let all those itchy hairs be sucked right off them. It can be a pain to get all the hair off. I have never found vacuuming it to be very helpful. I tend to use a toothbrush or qutips and lots of alcohol spray afterwards.

Hey I just cleaned my bedroom fan the other day ~ I used a window cleaner with alcohol to clean the exterior and the air compressor to blow out the back ~ that worked great and was uber satisfying !

I just successfully power washed 3 disgusting fans - 2 box type and 1 oscillator. Let them dry fully and they worked perfectly ❤

i take mine outside and use a leaf blower__Lol____then i wipe down with wet rag, once in awhile if i feel really OCD cleaning mode ( like every 6 months ) i will get a q tip or a rag and use a not sharp utensil knife with the rag over it to get in the grooves

I clean my fan’s by taking it apart then take the bad dirty parts outside with a dry scrub brush and dust the hell out of it then either take a wet cloth or put it in my dishwasher on a short cycle and then polish it off with a rag sprayed with wood polish.. they turn out BEAUTIFUL EVERYTIME ❤
