When somebody drives under the influence the consequences aren’t right in front of them. There’s a great chance that nothing will happen at all. Getting in a car and playing with the radio or eating food or reaching for your phone or a drink is just as dangerous as getting in a vehicle while under the influence and focusing on the road.

I am so sorry. I was slammed into at a stop light at 10am. He was a physician with a history of opioid abuse . I ended up with a broken neck and multiple surgeries. On deposition and in court, he stated that "he didn't recall" what happened. Unfortunately, my family and I recall all too well. I am reminded of it every damn day.

Yep it's not fair. They are more likely to survive as they have slower reaction times and don't brace for impact, this means they are more likely to suffer less broken bones ect and the alcohol then acts as a buffer that inhibits certain chemicals that are released when a person suffers a major injury. The same phenomenon can be seen from sleeping passengers and unconscious patients in ambulance crashes.

A drunk driver took my best friend in 8th grade. she was walking on the grass on the side of the break down lane, He hit her so hard that her body flew over 2 lanes of highway rd. She landed face down in a pond on the side of the rd. My step father was in the emergency room when they brought her body in. She was bruised from head to toes. We were told she died instantly. She managed to save her little sisters life by pushing her out of the way, but unfortunately, she didn't move fast enough to get herself out of the path of this guy. When he went to court, we found out this guy had been pulled at least 22 times for DUI . This was back in the 80s when people got away with DUI like it was a seat belt ticket or something. He only got a few years in jail for killing a beautiful innocent soul. I have no sympathy for anyone who drives under the influence. Im sending prayers to her dad and family dog. I truly hope that she and her mom get some kind of peace. 🙏🌹🌹

He was so drunk I don't think he is aware and may not remember anything that happened the next day. Although, I believe anyone in a crash as horrible as this (even the perpetrator) should immediately be checked out at the hospital. He may have a serious head injury or internal bleeding. The officers could then be held responsible. They could have taken his BAL while there. This is so sad this father was killed by someone so stupid and irresponsible. Why do people continue to get in a vehicle when they are impaired? I haven't finished the video, so I don't know what happens.

It mostly came down to the vehicle in this case, he’s in a big red fuck-you-everyone-else lifted pickup, that’s probably never even been off-road and is as clean as the day it was bought for him, the lifted suspension raised him above the impact area so the force didn’t hurt him (outside the general force that make him hit his head against the roof, mostly due to his lack of seatbelt), but totaled the truck, while the other car had the now lifted bumper of the truck crash right through the driver’s side window and into the Father/driver and killed them instantly.

While I understand the thought behind it, that's a really bad way to go. The law cannot discriminate who it is better to murder and who it is worse. What matters is if it was intentional, nothing else. Disparity of laws creates protected groups and minorities and leads to opression. After all, once we are all used to the fact one murder is better than the other, we will look as to why battery isn't. Or stealing. You can see where it goes wrong from there...

You could argue it's on the high end, possibly 5-8 would have been sufficient. But, it appears that there was a decent judge on that day, because they gave him 10 years instead. People forget that emotions have no place in a courtroom. One side demands life, the other leniency. Both sides are biased. The judge is the only rational thinker. He decided 10 years was required. Families want an "eye for an eye". God will enact His own justice on everyone, according to each his/her own deeds. "Vengeance is mine, says the LORD. I will repay."

It's tough to hear the cries of someone that has lost their loved one. I felt so emotional after hearing her. One thing have never thought about(when it comes to police) is that they are placed in these situations where people have been exposed to horrific trauma and try to distract them as best they can to keep them from seeing their loved ones mangled. Normally I am pretty negative about cops and shooting everyone. The police officers here aren't like the ones I've encountered, but I've never lost someone like this. Trucks like this one are everywhere. When I park my normal car at the grocery store I can't help but think about one of them plowing in to be head on, and how that would most likely be the last thing I see. I drove under the influence of drugs before. I ended up pulling over and passing out. I wake up to cops and had to do sobriety tests, which I failed miserably! I was charged with DUI and had to complete drug and alcohol classes, I got 18 months supervised probation and had to do a MADD class. That was 1 of the saddest things I've ever went to. I hugged each and every person who shared their stories and they just said to me.. if you really feel the way you say you do, make us a promise to never drive under the influence again. That was over 6yrs ago and I can say that, I've definitely learned from my poor choice. I'm grateful that I didn't hurt anyone.

I have never touched a steering wheel after having drunk enough to feel it. I did try to drive stoned once.... but on the state hwy., I couldn't get my speed up to 35, the minimum speed. Never did that again, I was scared to death. You got to see the victim impact panel, then? I have considered speaking in one of those, but there are so many people affected by dd accidents, I don't think it's possible to run out of heartbreaking stories.

The 1 story that hit me the hardest.. this lady was sharing how her and her family were going to a basketball tournament for her daughter and her daughter's friend. On their way there, they get hit by a drunk driver and their daughter was killed. I have daughters, so I put myself in her shoes. Definitely a sobering experience! I was lucky enough to pull over and not hurt anyone because it would be hard to live with myself, knowing I caused a family that much pain and loss.

I would pick up a 6 pack of Michelob and drive around town drinking it by myself. Countless times I would drive absolutely smashed. I never got busted and never got into an accident so I was lucky. As I got older I started realizing I wasn’t as good at driving drunk as I use to be. I even drove drunk AF a couple of times with my infant son in the back seat. What an absolutely selfish and disgusting person I was. July 28th 2001 was THE last time I had anything to drink. My wife and I both just stopped. It’s just not worth it. When I was younger my brother and sister ragged on me every chance they got because I was drinking or drunk. Some 20 years later I’m at my now doctor brothers house and I open their fridge to get a pop and it’s packed with beer! Come to find out my sister is a lush and loves her red wine! They busted on me for years but I quit. I had no idea that my brother and sister, who I held in high regard, were a couple of hypocrites. I was able to forgive them for their BS but like clockwork every time my brother gets a chance he throws up shit I did some 40 years ago. I still love them both though. They’re the only family I have left. Stay sober my friend.

Breathalyzers are extremely inaccurate and only test for alcohol, not other substances the individual might be under. Cops in the US use the FST to determine if the driver was fit to be driving or not, which will give them probable cause to do a more accurate test like the urine test used in this case.

I was widowed at 23 yrs old by a drunk drive. i had married my high school sweetheart and we had so many plans. In a split second he was erased from the planet. Its been many years and I have dealt with this pain and am ok. He chose to drink and drive knowing that he has a history with similar charges, proceeds to speed to 90+ mph while being in the oncoming lane and gets into a horrific accident resulting in the death of a husband and father along with his dog while nearly ending the lives of the other passengers.. And only got 10 years in the end. What a fucking cruel joke that is. its an investigation, it takes time. they got the sample of his urine and when the test came back they put out a warrant and he was caught the next day. they also are making small talk with him to build rapport (not because hes a "victim"), maybe to get him to open up or to take the test because the suspect will be more vulnerable if he feels like he can trust the officers.

He asked when he was about to go home at the police station and even teared up about it. I agree though that he should've gotten way more time because he took a life from this world! I got 6 years on my 2nd dope case. No sales or intent. Just simple possession. They raided my house. I did 3 years starting that morning they kicked my door in. The justice system is so flawed and pathetic here. CT laws are crazy strict. It's nicknamed "the inmate state" because we have 21k males locked up in our prisons in 2007. We had 3 county jails. And 15 prisons. Only 1 female prison which is also their county jail in a section of it for unsentenced inmates. You can't mix them. Look how small of a state we are with 3.5 million people. That doesn't include people on probation, parole, or out on bond.

The cops KNEW this was going to be a court case, where it would be a loooong trial, and whoever the defense attorney was going to be, they knew this would be a 2-3 year case fighting everything (because of the fatality). Any officer know that defense attorneys love to say "the area where they were doing the WAT and OLS (walk and turn and one leg stand) was NOT level, so they don't count." Knowing that the defense attorney was almost CERTAIN to try to make a deal out of an uneven surface and attempt in court to invalidate the evidence, they preempted this defense by just moving to a flat surface then and redoing the WAT and doing the OLS. That's why they moved. I sure as hell would have to, knowing that was going to pretty much be either one of or the absolute key piece of evidence to get a conviction on a involuntary manslaughter charge (20+ years typically in prison).

My husband passed 9.22.23 he had a heart attack while driving his dump truck. He was only 46. I remember getting to the hospital & the doctor walking in to tell me he didn’t make it. I’ve never felt a pain or let a scream out like that. Now I’m 32 and widowed. We were together 11 years. The absolute love of my life. Seeing his body was traumatic the cuts on his head and face. I had the priest re new our vowels and read his last rights. I love you Chris 7/7/77-9/22/23 My life changed in an instant. Everything we worked for gone. Staring over while grieving is so hard. If someone dies as a result of impaired ability due to alcohol, it is homicide. I used to drink drive myself- people who do this (including me, back then) think we are fine to drive when we drink, but no, that is an alcohol induced delusion. I finally realised my error and stopped drink driving, thankfully before I killed anyone.

also notice how when family members of his got on the phone w/the cops the cops never let on that this guy is their prime suspect and is potentially in criminal trouble. Because if they did, his family might have convinced him to lawyer up, refuse tests, remain silent, etc... They just said he's ok. When asked other details that the cops obviously knew the answer to because we saw the answer ourselves in the bodycam footage, they'd say they don't know, they just want to let them know he's ok. When asked if they could come to him, they tried to talk them out of it, oh sorry the roads are blocked, we'll call you later (after we're done sweet talking him into helping us to get as much evidence against him as possible). When the suspect himself asked how the other car was, they pretended they had no idea and just gave him 'i don't know'. They knew. But if they told him and he realized how much trouble he potentially was in, depending on all the evidence, then he might make it more difficult for them to get that evidence. Even letting him go can help because he might go do something that gives them even more evidence, like confess to his friends. So they did far more than it appears.

Standard procedure with a DUI. If you act civil throughout the process, they send you home once you fill out paperwork and give samples. They can't hold you on something like manslaughter without evidence and he hadn't broken any other laws outside of driving drunk. The accident is still just an accident, until they can prove with legit evidence that you were driving while heavily intoxicated. They also need process the scene and get the death legitimized via the coroner, before they can say you killed someone. If they don't do everything by the book, hence the time taken to do the field sobriety tests, the guy can walk and not be held responsible. This was handled perfectly, and dude ultimately paid a heavy price for his poor decision making that nigh.
