This guy does 10 videos and more per week, on all kinds of stuff, on all kinds of jets. He's awesome.

11:40 could possibly be the limits of the electronics at the time. 300 meter ranging requires a switching frequency of 500 khz which could totally have been the limit for the mig 19 with all its valve electronics.

8:52 I recall it was the MIG-25 that introduced a look-down (shoot-down) radar system for USSR fighters. This system eliminates 'ground clutter' (the thousands of returns you get from objects on the ground) by: (a) computing the relative speed of every return from its Doppler shift (how much the frequency of the return differs from the outgoing pulse); (b) eliminating (not displaying) any return that is (pretty well) going at the same speed as the ground. The difficulty with this system is that you need to know the speed of the ground (relative to yourself); it was the introduction of an inertial navigation system into the MIG-25 that made the look-down system possible. That radar is better than I'd expected... based on how bad the MiG-21's is, I'd expected it to be much worse than it is, being even older. My biggest problem in DCS is always seeing things, so even if it is WVR only it still might do better than me.

This Mig-19P looks like Egyptian F-6A modified on western standard rather then original Mig-19P. The gunsight is way more sophisticated then original ASP-5 gunsight series. Need to note that only J-6A had anti-air missiles mounted on a regular service variant. Waiiiit, did the devs used J-6 for the reference?

These terrible radars exist just to make a night intercept possible, remember in the mid 1950's night-fighters was still a thing

@@Marlon044 All western fighters of equivalent vintage; F-106, F-8, F-102 and F4D had search and track radars capable of missile guidance.
@Maeyanie5 жыл бұрын
@@reillybrangan2182 Of those, only the F-102 is really a fair comparison, as the F-106 is a better match to the MiG-21 in age, and F-4D is well later than that. But yes, it was able to fire radar-guided missiles, where the MiG-19 was not. How good those missiles were, and whether taking off the guns was worth the trade, is another matter...

@@reillybrangan2182 They came later then MiG-19. Also MiG-19 could employ beam rider AA missile K-5.

Does the radar show their attitude or just distance, bearing, and whether they are above/below?

just above or below

How come this radar is much better at A-A than the MiG-21's, which is supposed to be an interceptor?

Is it me or is this better than the radar in the Mig-21bis? At least it seems much quicker at getting a lock.

I prefer it to 21 radar TBH

I was very disappointed when discovered that Mig-21 radar is not integrated with gunsight ranging when using AA guns. This is huge step back comparing to Mig-19 radar/gunsight. In many other aspects Mig-21 radar is better: longer range, air-to-ground aiming, support for radar guided missiles etc.
