My understanding is that the loadout with 6 AIM-54 also includes 2 Aim-9 missiles, 1 one each pylon. I also understand that particular loadout was hardly used because of the weight and stress on the airframe.

the loadout was rarely used probably for multiple reasons: 1) the tomcat could only bring back 2 phoenix missiles normally 2) every missile has a limited amount of lifetime it can be carried on a pylon without being shot, carrying 6 at a time eats up reserves much more quickly

For those having some difficulty remembering the different Phoenix modes, something that helps me, was to think of them like wired torpedoes with different sonar modes in terms of detectability and how they function. I had to take classes in college on different weapons systems and the analogy helped me because everyone has their own abbreviations for the same things.

@@jjsemperfi It's essentially the difference between a Wire guided torpedo (being steered from the sub) vs a self guided torpedo (steering itself) AND the difference between active sonar (constantly loudly searching) and passive sonar (constantly listening and using what it hears to steer)

Added bonus to TWS and PD STT shots-since you're guiding in Pluse-Doppler mode, you won't generate any RWR warnings until the missiles go active. Also, as I understood it, the Phoenix can also guide to the PITBULL point autonomously with its own small-scale INS, but needs SARH in case the target begins to maneuver.

​@@CoyoteOne As far as getting killed by Phoenix missiles go, it's the same story as the AMRAAM-until the missile itself goes active, your own RWR is still detecting the usual searching RADAR emissions, and you won't get a warning of a missile launch until the last few seconds of interception. With the F-14, you can get hit at a greater range. As far as firing modes, usually you want to stay in the same RADAR mode you were firing in, to ensure all missiles are supported. For example, when firing multiple Phoenix shots, TWS is needed to support all missiles at once, at least until they all go active. PDSTT would be if you're guiding a single Phoenix, which also has the advantage of keeping the missile in semi-active homing all the way, for extra sniping potential. The big thing to remember is that the RADAR set isn't super-successful in maintaining a lock between RADAR modes, like jumping from PDSTT to regular STT. So in a lot of cases, you'll have to reacquire target locks yourself if you have to switch modes.

hey, i have to ask....... is there any way you can make the plane training videos like the AJS-viggen. i feel like that format is just so good for noobs. you have one short video on each firing mode. and one video to explain all the modes. your viggen videos have me as a effective combat AG machine. Having an explanation in the beginning of each video of which one is the recommended way of shooting or which one is more simple or accurate , etc..... is great. thanks for all the videos either way they're great.

the problem i, and some other guys aswell, noticed is that if you use the phoenix in TWS against AI Fighters they will try and dodge the missle as soon as it comes of the rail even if you are at 35-50nm at angels 20+ and thus they will get away and come in for the kill on you or get to close to them to keep the track up that they fire back at you. Would be great if you and your guys could look into it and maybe make a video about using it against AI. Im playing on the 2.5.5 Stable Version not the PB

Depending on the firing parameters, then usually go active around 8-12 nautical miles from the target. I think you can see the instant they do from the RIO's cockpit. There is timer to pitbull IIRC.

I think the data received from the uplink in the TWS are not precise enough to guide the missile all the way in. The data packages update every 2s (refresh rate of the radar in TWS), good enough for mid course updates, but not enough for terminal guidance. You need STT for that.

It's such a short time anyway literally about 10 seconds so unless you lucky you generally are screwed since it's not enough time to react which is why you don't fly straight at highish altitude at an F-14 within 40 nautical miles that has nails on you. Fortunately the AWG 9 is not good against maneuvering targets so by terrain masking and notching you can sneak up to them easy enough to go toe to toe with AIM 120s

The missile in TWS mode uses SARH corrections until it can see the target by its own means. If you somehow drop the SARH, it will continue in inertial mode until it can see the target (but you are running a risk of it locking on something you do not want it to lock on).

Ok, ECM mode... essentially, you fire blind, I'm assuming as close to boresight as possible, toward a target you apparently know (how?) is jamming you.... no setup required?

Mikkall jamming works by essentially spamming a bunch of signals to confuse something. Those signals have to come from a source and some sensors are equipped to lock onto that source rather then rely on pings from themselves

If the radar set can pick out the warship from the ground, it's possible, and there had been experiments during the 1st Gulf War. But it's not what it was designed for, unlike the Maverick.

@@eatthisvr6 You won't find a special switch for it in the cockpit. If you look in the manual on the control stick page, its the wep select hat except you depress it. So if your hat doesn't have a depress function you'll just need to bind it to something else.

Its cause people notch them easily if you fire them from long range. They have heaps of time to notch if you fire them at like 40nm.

When I said that the 14B could take 6 Aim 54's everyone laughed! I regularly used 6 missiles with "Harpoon" - the real problem is landing with 6 unused Aim 54 missiles... but as I always used all my munitions up on CAP (not firing them at Cap, you understand) it was never an issue. On the contrary the 14D (coming out later) has a more up to date cockpit and does not use Aim 54s at all! The good news is that the 14D takes 6 - 8 AMRAAMS (virtually identical to the Aim-120);. all of this info is from the Harpoon simulation - good enough at the time to check scenarios that never happened) and a better variety of Air to Ground munitions .. Incorrect. The F-14D can carry AIM-54's and no model carried AIM-120's. Except for during testing. However that project was cancelled.

They could carry 6 but the standard loadout was 4 in the belly and then either 2 Sparrow and 2 side winders or 4 sidewinders. The Phoenix cost $475,000 each, so if there was a mission abort, the Tomcat would be too heavy to recover on deck and would have to jettison at least 2 of the 1000lbs Phoenix. According to Wiki, we fired 3 Aim54 in combat with 0 hits. The iranians had much more experience with the F14 in combat and supposedly achieved 78 kills with their phoenix missiles.
