On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

@3:03 Nice to see USS Independence on the side of that F-4. I served on Indy '93 - '97. I was also lucky enough to be in Plane Guard Station behind USS Midway when they launched their last F-4 before heading to drydock to get upgrades to take on the 'new' F-18s. It was a bit sad to watch that last F-4 go, but their day had come and they had done their job.

The Sparrow is utterly broken in DCS.. yes the early variants were notiriously unreliable but even so i think they had numbers like 33% kill ratio or something.. on DCS even the latest M/MH/P variants have about 15% .. i experimented the other day with F-14 and F-15C (for the "FC3 Arcade" thing) and got similar numbers of 15 to 25% hit ratio.. then a R-27R will track like 3 times better

Based on how Sparrows perform when shot from Eagles and Hornets, I think the Sparrow problem was really more like a Phantom problem.

Missile tech improved massively after their miserable performance over Vietnam. Aircrew had not been properly trained on the performance envelope of the weapons. Much more live fire R&D was done and radar tech also got better. It’s the same old story of a new technology being rammed down the throats of operators before the tech is properly tested in the field, by people who know nothing about the actual systems.

MiG-23 was designed as a unique component of GCI/Integrated Air Defense of Armies/Soviet Union/Eastern Bloc nations; like AIM-54 was designed as a unique component of the F-14. Waves of high altitude B-52/F-111s were going to fall prey to them in the 1970's which forced them to go low level. Pitting a flight of Floggers over the open ocean, far away from GCI and SAM assets... let alone in a merge is a group of mice trying to take down a stray cat on the street. They will get piled up like cordwood, snacks like you made of them here. What a nice video, so many cool visuals and excellent commentary! 🥰

The Soviet FAB-9000 you mentioned is actually a pretty big and powerful bomb that weighs just over 20,000 lb. If properly aimed, could cause quite a lot of damage.

The Navy flew the F-4J DCS currently only has an F-4E. It’s important to remember that all of this stuff is really only an approximation and not an accurate representation of the aircraft or the missile performance for that matter.

I believe thats accurate as well, I heard during the Iran Iraq war, many Mig-23s were used as well (I'm not sure the variant but obvs some sort of export variant) and they had terrible losses, I believe there is even a story of 3 of them getting killed by 1 Iranian tomcat with 1 aim54 because they were in close formation, they might have had some fox2 kills but I've never heard of a radar guided kill from a mig23...again not sure if the variant the Iraqis had even had that option.

Hey GS idk if you’re going to see this, but do you think that with the news about the AIM-174 being used on f/a 18s and it being a long range missile, do you think that you could do a video about it and explain some stuff? All I currently know is it is an SM6 with an AMRAAM seeker and can go to ranges of about 130 miles at around 3.5 Mach. It would be awesome to see it be used in either a 1 on 1 video or in an awacs destroy video. Thanks!

The High Lark Radar of the Flogger sucked big time. No Look down - shoot down when the target ist low, and limited when the target is at medium altitude.The F 1 -Missile (R-23R / AA-7), esp. the AA-7 A Variant had a very short range, even head on against fighter size targets, and not more than 2 nautical miles stern on. The only advantages of the Flogger was its size (it was not very big and therefore hard to pick up visually) and first and foremost its straight line speed. A dogfight against a Flogger could even be won by a Tornado or something similar, just because the Flogger could not sweep its wings under G-load.

I wonder what the range was on those twin 23MM cannon in the back of the Blinder?

That one has an ECM package in the tail and no 23mm. It only had the be 23mm when equipped with a turret and would have had a fairly limited range. What they really did was fly in a large formation some Tu-22 had the ECM package and the rest had Kh-22 cruise missiles. They would split off and attack from multiple directions to make the job of defense much more difficult. Also obviously they only needed to get within the range of the cruise missiles range. These systems are why the Navy had great interest in being able to defend the fleet from as far out as possible.

Red Storm Rising has an excellent description of an engagement between Soviet naval aviation and a USN Task Force. Only being set in the mid 80’s the attacking aircraft are Tu-22M Backfires and Tu-95 bears both launching cruise missiles. Actually Red Storm Rising is an excellent book and very accurate it was written by Tom Clancy to be an accurate analysis of a NATO VS Warsaw Pact confrontation.

They didn’t it’s just a skin the DCS model is of an F-4E. The Navy never flew the E. The Navy equivalent to the F-4E was the F-4J which had no gun and had a much better radar the the E. It’s important to remember that that DCS is an approximation and not to be considered academically accurate.
