I think the Kei truck 350-kg load limit, is actually more about a legal maximum gross vehicle weight for the Kei class, than about the actual carrying capacity. The ones that Daihatsu imported into the US in the late 80s, and early 90s, could be loaded to a 1500-lbs cargo. But those were locked into low range and could not get over 25-mph, so they had a lot less dynamic load to contend with.

While the tipper would be a better daily driver (more versatile, more capable machine), if i had a business that relied on deliveries then i would absolutely love to have a fleet of Midgets. It's small, fuel efficient, got just enough room in the back for a pizza heater, or for a box of car parts, small enough to fit inside of a regular box truck (go to a city in the big truck, park it, and use the little one to deliver stuff out of the big one). Might even be small enough to be carried on a hitch, kind of like those mobility scooters. And the spare tire being right there in the front would make the inevitable tire change incredibly quick. So yeah, i can absolutely see the benefit of either machine, they are great at exactly what they were built for. -A.W.
