Hey Marty, I had similar issues with my WRX 15 years ago. I bought a stiffer antisway bar on the front suspension and it became a snowplough. I saw the light and removed the bar and returned it to factory spec. I then put a stiffer adjustable bar on the rear and Shazam no understeer. Adjust your tyre pressure as well as that can really change the balance of the car and it’s grip. Love the WRC blue coupe!
@jacsmiley4 жыл бұрын
Agree! I've owned x2 an E2DD and F2DD. Both factory strut and factory swaybars and uprated springs for ride height. I had zero understeer issues. 3rd green light up on the DCCD for loose surface control was bang on👌🏽

@markraumer23364 жыл бұрын
@Mark Wessley - the early year model WRX were essentially front wheel drive and they need to be real soft up front on the sway bar and real stiff out back - so they can dig into the corners. This does not feel as sporty as the front end feels like it has too much body roll- but the the tyres will grip and turn and the stopwatch will tell the real story. Cant wait to see Marty refine the setup and chop the bloody BR86!

It dont think thats the issue, it seems set up right. 4WD does understear but you can correct it with brakes going into a corner. accelerating will understear while breaking is gonna transfer load to the front and give better traction. break, rotate and pin it when you have a clear line out of the corner is what im told with 4WD. could be wrong though

From watching both cars a few things are apparent.. BRZ: Stiffer Rebound (Car was hopping a lot), and bring ride height up a bit (Car seem to be running out of travel) WRX: Either a (22mm ARB? or remove front ARB completely/ and or stiffer rear ARB) Car seems to need more weight on the front both corner entry and middle corner) also seem like it needed a bit more ride height. That seems like a good place to start, and it's only my opinion. Good job boys, and much love from the states.
@ikbendusan4 жыл бұрын
slower rebound damping will result in the car skipping over the peaks of the bumps; he needs less compression damping so the wheel will conform to the troughs of the bumps instead

This is the inherent problem with a boxer engine. All that weight over the front axels as the engine is so far forward. This is why an Evo is a lot better on tarmac.
@Brickhazard4 жыл бұрын
@ How so? Longitudinal engines all suffer with the bulk of the engine over the front axles. Early RS audi's suffer from this as well as the gearbox needs to line up with the front axles. Transverse engines have a higher center of gravity but the engine can be tilted back with the vast majority of weight either behind the front axles or on top. Just look at Subaru and Audi in the WRC. They always struggled on Tarmac rallies but excelled on Gravel.

@aDaWaN4 жыл бұрын
The DCCD centre diff in the STi has a 65R/35F torque split when open. This means: the looser the diff, the more oversteer. When fully locked the diff is 50F/50R, the same as a WRX (non-STI). This might be counter intuitive at first. On dry asphalt you use the diff full loose (more oversteer for rotation) and on snow/gravel you can set the diff to full lock (more balance / understeer).
@CatTerrist4 жыл бұрын
THATS NOT HOW THE DCCD WORKS The F/R is 41:59 or 35:65 depending on year, the better ones are 41:59, full stop end of story. It is MECHANICAL and can never change. Do not make this common mistake in understanding how it all works The diff is NEVER completely locked, it still can slip - it just takes a lot more force to do so. The diff going tighter only disallows differences in F/R rotation. And TBH the diff being open just makes it easier to drive - The diff locked can be oversteer city if you throw it in hard enough even on tarmac.

Yeah I agree, if you look at later part of your video you tend to hit apex at theorical middle. Where it should be later 3/4 of the corner (late apex) ideally, so you get a longer run on the straight (you can also trail brake to adjust balance). It would help with accuracy if you kept your hands on the steering wheel more and less feeding as if your parking the car. It's much harder to find centre and smooth transition back to straight if you feed the wheel like that. Have fun! Can't wait for the brz upgrade!

it's to do with coeffecient of friction, once the tyre starts sliding the coefficient goes down and you have less grip
@tricd04444 жыл бұрын
The thing that AWD/4WD excels in is straight line acceleration. With the proper setup, you can trail brake to get the rear to turn around, slide through the last 1/3 of the turn, and get on the power WAY earlier than a RWD can.The effect will be much more prominent on cold or street tires, much the same reason that a FWD will ruin a RWD in a short circuit track, considering same tires and same power. The WRX needs the right suspension/diff setup, and a bunch of seat time tweaking settings to make it just right, tires not in consideration, to make the time difference between the BRZ. However, on a tarmac track, the BRZ would also greatly benefit from a bit more seat time, and tires that weren't almost scrubbing. Suspension could use a bit of work and take that away. Would DEFINITELY enjoy a seat swap, and see how Marty does in the BRZ, as well as Moog in the STI. Marty might get used to the BRZ's RWD configuration a lot quicker than Moog will figure out how to thrash the STI.
@reecedrury41454 жыл бұрын
In advance driving/skid control I was taught that in an understeering condition to as someone has touched on above, to steer out of it and back into it, multiple times until you get the grip
@Henryduk4 жыл бұрын
This is down to how the tyre react to whats called the "slip angle", the angle between the direction the tyre is moving, and the direction the tyre is being steered to ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slip_angle ). All tyres gain grip with increasing slip angle until it reaches a peak, then it starts to drop until it hits a steady value (see the second diagram down on the wikipedia page). On top of this, since the cornering grip of a tyre is perpendicular to the steered angle, as you steer the wheel more, the amount of torque the tyre can give to the car to turn it goes down (imagine trying to pull a door handle standing near the hinge as compared to by the handle). So once the car is understeering, if you steer more, the tyres are giving less grip and the grip they have got is doing less work trying to turn the car.
@93GrayWolf934 жыл бұрын
Love watching the boys actually using themselves. MOOG. Final corner should be as late an apex as you can to maximise the straight line speed. So opposite to what you're doing in this vid. MARTY. you wanna take off some speed and reduce lock until the screaming stops from your front tyres. That's just burning rubber not helping turn in. If you leave your DCCD in auto try being heavy on the throttle them moment you notice your hands start to reduce steering lock.

@mouldy51564 жыл бұрын
a beefy rear would do more than a front swaybar could do by quite a margin. this is the experience i have.
@hagglundguy4 жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly he already has adjustable sway bars in the STI. He could put the rear on in a bit more stiffer setting and hit a few laps. If that alone does not satisfy the front could be loosened a notch. I've heard the STIs are understeer heavy and when they were rallied the drivers always trail braked their car mid corner to put weight on the front and introduce just a little oversteer. This also happens to be exactly what adjustable sway bars are for.
@knerdrider4 жыл бұрын
Marty: It's a rally car, so DRIVE it like a rally car! Use the throttle to pull the front out of the corners when it understeers. Simultaneous gas and brake with your left foot, rally style, will let you transfer weight and angle the car as sideways or not as you want. You definitely have the aggressiveness! Nice driving! Moog: You've got this. :)

Marty might wanna decrease tire pressure with those stiff sway bars because the car might want some body roll

This video and the other track battle is proof to all that say BRZ isn’t a real car or is slow. I love my 2013 BRZ and the engagement you feel driving it. Just look at the grin on Moogs face. That is literally me every time I drive. I have the necessary basic boltons UEL Header, Perrin Intake Pipe, OFT tune and light wheels RPF1 (16lbs), Tien coilovers. I have driven Porsche 911 997, 991.2 , Lambo, Huracan, BMW M4, GTI, WRX, Miata, and for the price used BRZ is the answer for me.

Aha! Quite a few lessons to be learned here. Filming each other (moog being filmed while he comments his own driving...) and marty's headcam showing where he is looking at a given moment (eyes tracking) Good game on switching places. The BRZ needs a bit , just a tiny bit moore "OOOMPH" to move away. Awesome Commentary as well!

Moog needs to learn the pedal dance to turn off the ABS and traction control completely.
@mightycarmods4 жыл бұрын
I know the pedal dance - but in VSC Sport I’ve never noticed it any negative effect as it actually lets you get quite sideways before kicking in (more sideways than you’d want for a fast lap)

Marty to reduce understeer you can go back to a stock front sway bar and get a bigger rear bar. or get stiffer springs in the back aswell. also practicing steering/brake/accel timing to create the right weight transfer to oversteer is important as well.

Mr Marty, not sure what alignment you running but there are a few free tweaks you can try to help the under-stear situation. For the front: Run more toe out, try adding 0.2 (It will help turn in at the cost of stability), Softer front suspension, lower tyre pressures upfront (try 2 - 3 psi incremental), not too sure if you have front sway bar but going softer upfront will keep more tyre on the ground also run 2 - 2.5 degree camber. For the rear, do the opposite, Run toe in, adding 0.2 (having the wheels in opposite direction to the front will aid turn in), Harder rear suspension (It will break traction easier-ish) Higher rear tyre pressure (2 - 3 psi incremental), rear sway bar you want to stiffen up, keep the camber the same at the rear. Hope this helps buddy but you should see quite the difference. Love the show, Keep up the great work!

Marty, if you feel like your sti is understeering see about adjusting your sway bars, if I remember right, soften your front and stiffen your rear, or if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself take it to a good race alignment guy and tell him what it's doing and what you want it to do and depending on how much adjustability your car has he can work wonders

We already knew the STI would need a LOT of upgrades to compete with the BRZ once the turbo was installed. Now we know it might need quite a bit because Moog is about to drop an extra 100KW in the car that’s already faster.

Progression is the key word. Your BRZ was no doubt stretching its coolant reserve. In the day that your thermostat can't open any further to compensate for 'hop-up' mods, wear, tear, and typical flow passage congestion etc. your temp guage will go off the dash, which catches people completely unawares. If people could actually watch the thermostats opening percentage over the years, they might understand the limitations of a factory cooling system.
