You bet it was not! His cheap, calculated condescence was so patent! And Solomon`s dicourse was so repetitive, virtue-signaling and aiming at a shallow sentimentalization of a very complex issue: "Protection" and "must protect"-repeated again and again-, "the UN resolution on refugees and asylum seekers" at least four times, and of course, universal unanimity ¿? to stop the impending doom of "climate change". Not one piece of serious data to back his leitmotivs. As a Christian I take compassion seriously, or try my best to do so. Compassion is not about a misty emotion of wholesale goodwill and feeling sorry for "Humanity" . It can be very personal and demanding. Prudence and wisdom must be its close companions so it bears fruit. A. de Saint Exupéry's almost forgotten book Citadelle holds several uncommonly wise insights on this subject. With a different structure and style, M. Revault d'Allones' "L'homme compassionnel" is centered in the necessary but slippery relation of politics an compassion, and worth reading.

Mr Murray won that argument - first rate rhetoric. He picked up on platitudes and put them back into the box. I could praise further ... As to the world responding to the 'climate challenge' I don't think there's 'world' agreement on that one so not a good example. The bottom line is that immigration must be controlled and that means it must be done legally. Full stop. Ms Gupta's story is of course affecting. She travelled a huge distance but there were 'safe' countries through which she passed but her vision was the UK so she kept going. The government bureaucracy relating to her pending status was unfortunate but I would not criticise delay as I have no idea on processes. Many individual cases have merit but they should come through legal channels. We cannot take everyone who might want to come here as our infrastructure is already broken in part and our size and economy cannot cope without reducing existing citizens' way of life to what would become a lowest common denominator. The government must get to grips with this.

The main issue with journalists (vs scientists and researchers) is that they speak from beliefs not facts. Then they come up with a narrative that supports their beliefs and somewhat fits the facts or at least some facts. Typically those facts they repeat endlessly as if a couple of facts were enough to explain the whole of reality. Sad.

Mr Solomon is totally deluded. I was hoping for some sense and facts. But no, virtue signaling waxing lyrical about these wonderful refugees who benefit Britain - I beg to differ. & please stop interrupting Douglas (not Charles) Murray.

I have seen grateful refugees from WWII who legally came to the land of my birth. Greeks, Italians, Yugoslavs, Germans and others. They came with nothing but heartbreak. Over many years they made the bricks and tiles to build their homes. There were no benefits, no handouts. They learnt the language, they integrated, they worked hard and respected the law and faith of the land. There were many highly qualified professionals who held meagre positions, who very rarely worked again in the fields they were trained because of the language barrier and lack of funds to study and sit the exams to qualify them to work in their field. They did not displace the people of the country to be housed and educated, to demand special needs, wants, changes to the law to suit their beliefs in faith and their justice system. I am talking of a majority of people not one or two selected people as Mr Solomon did in his discussion.

Solomon was the most despicable guest I have ever witnessed. Douglas should have been stronger with this vile man. Sorry Douglas. Roger, your pal may not have been rude to Solomon but his wit and sarcasm would have put this excuse of a man in his place. So let down that you invited someone like this to the Spectator. His arrogance was repulsive .

How many illegal migrants became doctors and academics? What is the percentage out of the whole group. How many are claiming social benefits? How many are law-breaking? Perhaps these numbers should be revealed and discussed.

It is/isn’t in Britain’s “gifts” to take in migrants. They talk about this being in different country’s “gifts” and the world’s “gifts”. I’ve never heard of this woman d usage ever before.

@@michaelcollinson2812 c'mon, it's not that simple. They're in our faces with this all the time. I just don't like emotional manipulation. I don't do it and I wish others wouldn't. Believe it or not I consider myself a truly compassionate person but you also have to be able to make the right decisions and that means looking at the facts and facing up to reality about what can be achieved.

Douglas, (Mr. Solomon, not Charles), gets it 100% every time. These migrant supporters never say what the UK should do to stop it, they always say it's a global situation. In other words, we don't want to do anything otherwise I won't have a job. P.S: Mr. Solomon might not be saying he wants open borders, but we all know he believes in it.

i cant work out if Solomons idiotic interruptions and smug grins when calling Douglas 'charles' are a result of his dimwitted, insufferable fuckwittery, or whether he is actually doing these things intentionally. Probably the latter, his grin had a certain 'knowing' look about it when he apologised.

Two of the contributors have referenced ‘climate-change’ completely unrelated to the discussion at hand - a sure sign that that ideology is now a core tenet of left-liberalism.
