It also traps the ball differently. Once you feel the square collapsing release squash the ball, there is nothing like it.

Yes the left is cupped post impact, and also the right is cupped at the top of the backswing which Mike called holding a plate, very awesome way to strike the ball, I've been doing it for years, trained under Dan Shauger for a while who has since passed, now Steve Pratt teaches lot of the same principles

your videos are always interesting and provocative. Surely what is allowing this type of release is that in the downswing the hips are moving left out of the way in a right handed golfer while the arms are travelling down the aim line longer i.e the body and arm movement is diverging thus allowing the left arm to stay extended longer. This is the real reason why players with this type of release hit less shots left. Just my observation and something Fred Couples has commented on about his swing.
@timothypollock83583 жыл бұрын
Fred couples does because his left arm is mostly lifted with little turn around his body in the early backswing. Then he turns his upper body horizontally at the top while continuing to lift and folds his wrist similarly to the follow through. The short left arm path relative to the turn causes this by essentially creating a long right arm through impact. In the case of Vijay, he takes the club high and outside with a lot of arm lift and then turns agressively with hip drive which creates another long trail arm situation. Austin does it because he turns back and through in one piece and then release his wrists on one plane more than almost anyone. Adam Scott does this because he turns his "shirt buttons" toward the rear of his body more than most tours pros do in the backswing. This means that a long hitter with strong downswing hip turn will release more around the body causing more trail hand over lead hand action. All these cases are different. Also, Couples and Singh do this in a more distinct way than the others due to major lead arm lift as compared to lead arm (center of the arm) around the body during the backswing.

I use to do this and started shooting in the 60s. Had a couple bad days and went to a top 100 teacher. We watched my swing on video. He said it was all wrong. It was this exact same release. I asked if it was a flip. He said no. He said my lag was incredible. I would crush drives high and straight and long. This was before the concept of hitting up on the ball with the driver: I was doing it. I would drive with the hips, the club would drop into the slot and I would release the crap out of it without any fear of going left. He convinced me to change. What a mistake. Now 10 years later I have a chicken wing right elbow through impact that I can't stop from happening. I'm trying to go back to the old swing. It feels so far gone. Body patterns and movements are all different. I can say it is a count yogi move. Works great for short game as well. The feeling of the drop is amazing in the full swing. In flow it is effortless and looks like molten metal through out the swing. Almost slow motion but the power was WOW! I'm going to go through the process of reworking it back to this concept. It's in there somewhere. I just have to find it again.

The wrists are going into Dorsi flexion and Palmer flexion through the strike the club is thrown from the top just after you shift it’s thrown in line with your left arm ( for right handlers) The club rotates around your lead wrist. His pivot differs from the common pivot taught today he worked under his c7 ( seventh cervicle ) He and Mike Dunaway explain on several videos.Mr. Austin was super long and straight. His friend and student Mike Dunaway could really hit at well. I witnessed him doing a driving exhibition at my club( Sankaty Head Golf Club) on Nantucket in the early nineties he flew it on the green from the red tees on 18 it was up hill cross wind over 340 yards.

Wow! No kidding? One of the popular videos of Mike hitting balls onto the green was shot from the front tees at #8 at Woodland Hills CC. It's about 300-ish from there. I think I could probably make it from there. I play a 5 wood from the back tees and have 110 yards in, if I hit the fairway. I've never heard anything about C7, that's interesting. Do we even have a C7? Wait, C7 would be way up at mid-spine. Hmm, ok. something to think about.

Really interesting, I had worked out years ago that chipping and pitching left hand below right it produced a very different release.. one that when you look at the butt of the club through impact it kicks back superfast back to the right ( like a trebuchet) .. try it. It produces the same left wrist cup after impact. This Austin release is like a normal grip version of this... and I’ve never even thought to compare the similarities. What I do know tho. is that it is def anti left, and if not timed right can lead to very high shots to the right... not the fault of the release .. that just needs to be timed correctly . Excellent video.. period.

You're right about Yogi and Couples. I made the same determination a while ago and actually taught myself the Yogi swing by analysing old videos. I had already learned the Couples swing and noticed the similarity and yes, both smash the ball with the right hand/arm. Yogi's swing is different though in that he took the club inside very fast and let the left arm ride up the body. He also turned the trail hip back powerfully with thrusting the lead hip and knee forward while maintaining and even deepening his spine angle, a very powerful and piston like action. The left arm was effectively driven back and forth in lockstep the winding/unwinding of the body. This allowed him to unwind with the trail arm, as a whole really, moving forward and downward and right through ball like a sledge hammer. Both he and Freddy tend to lock the lead arm to the upper body somewhat as you mention then Freddy takes it up and Yogi takes it up and around the body.

@@timothypollock8358 Yogi's swing will feel more like you are "catching" the ball with the club's loft line, which is an extension of your right hand/fingers rather than "throwing" right hand at the ball. This results from his rather unique grip, takeaway, and pivot action.
@timothypollock835811 ай бұрын
@@mygolfbuddy Yes, I absolutely agree because he strikes the ball more from the trail side of his body than most golfers and plays with more what I call a long trail arm than most as well. Very interesting concept about running out of right arm and chicken-winging. I found that if I thrust my right hip and right knee forward as much as I can (as if my right hip was a wrecking ball hitting a wall in front of me) I totally avoid the right arm feeling too short and avoid the chicken wing. If I don't do that, my left arm definitely starts to buckle and chicken wing. I'll have to try what you suggest. It might be a great alternative for golfers unable to get that right hip forward fast enough. Thanks for the tip.

He was brilliant the way he figured out how to use the human body to swing a golf club more efficiently through his study of kinesiology. It took me many many years to actually figure out what he was trying to say. We all know Mike was too technical in his explanations for many golfers. Once the light bulb came on for me, I felt I had to try to explain and share his method in an easier and fun way for golfers to understand. It's an amazing feeling to know the ball will go where I'm aiming 95% of the time. I really feel sorry for golfers when I see them spending a good part of their game hunting for their balls in the rough. If the only club in your bag that you're not hitting well is the driver ... there's something wrong with that driver! Don't change the swing just yet, try different drivers. As I've said many times, sometimes it is the arrow and not the archer. I bought a TaylorMade driver years ago and took it out. First shot straight down the middle for 150 yards then sudden sharp right hand turn mid air to the right. Second hole same thing. Like the ball was radio controlled. I had my old driver, so I hit it ... dead straight no problems. I parked the new driver until I got to a sharp dog leg right hole ... it was perfect for what this thing did. It's not a driver hole but I figured this thing is prefect and it was. The ball screamed around the corner and nearly ended up on the green. Anyway, I had the club reshafted with a quality shaft and still have the club today. Some shafts are just garbage. Also a friend bought a new driver that he could not hit straight. I tried, and I couldn't do it but I felt the head was torquing a lot. We shot a video and it was crazy. The shaft torqued almost 90º at impact. There's a reason Rory's driver shaft costs $3000.

Experimenting with the HG swing thought and watching the PGA players and instructors, I’m becoming convinced they use the Holy Grail method without awareness. They’re so focused on everything else they seem to miss the importance of the downward punch with the right arm. I recently experimented with combining the right hand only “throwing the club at the target” drill (right handed golfer) with the holy grail. Then I experimented with ways to maximize the speed/force of the throw ie making the club fly the farthest. (Not actually letting the club go). What I realized is, the maximum spreed/throw is gained by maximizing the downward punch/right arm push of the HG method toward the ground. Specifically the faster I forced my right arm down, the more force went into my right arm dual lever, and the more whipping and throwing energy went into my pretend club throw. This helped me feel the effectiveness of the HG swing.
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын

I think achieving an extension of the trail arm results as long as we feel we are pushing the handle of our club down with our trail hand along with our entire trail side at the very top of our swing; which gets all the bone and joints (levers) on our trail side pushing towards our lead side as well. All the muscles in our swing naturally pulls as we push with our bones during our swinging the club. To me this is the Holy Grail.

I know this is an older video but if you could answer this question it would be appreciated. You mentioned that this throw release prevents the ball from going left so would this throw release not be a good idea for a player whose natural shot shape is to miss right (slice)? My natural shot is a fade/slice and I am trying to decide whether I should l learn this throw release method or the twist release method. Intuitively it seems that a slicer should go for the twist release, but what makes me nervous about the twist release is that it requires timing the wrists to square the club; whereas this Mike Austin throw release theoretically seems easier to keep the face square through the impact zone. Great content you have and any insight you have is appreciated.

If you're still at the point of ability that you're fighting the ball going right you need to fix that before thinking about either of those fixes. I have several videos about fixing the slice that should help. Also, if you're gripping the club properly you shouldn't need to manipulate the clubface whatsoever in order to square it properly. 2 Questions: 1). How can I keep the left wrist flat while extending my right wrist after impact? 2). How can the right wrist extension, (or anything for that matter) after impact have any effect on the ball flight?
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
Perfect question! Ok, answer 1. You can't keep the left wrist flat, at least not without rotating the left arm like crazy. Which is what this release is all about. A lot of people think they need to keep that left wrist flat forever, but you don't. Trying to keep it flat makes you do all sorts of chicken wingy type of things. Answer 2. Because you're reserving the ability to extend the right arm through impact, it can't happen prior so you actually move through the ball with a better, more stable clubface, and therefore hit the ball better. Some things need to be planned before impact so they happen properly and others after. Golf is silly like that.

Love your focus on this release, but as a swing coach, I think that you have to connect it to what your hips are doing., as the “pelvic bowl” or floor is where the swing starts. The beauty of Mike Austin was that he would Isolate certain parts but then would connect the parts together. In your video, you focus on the release which is good, but a reference back to how the swing starts in the first place, is key. As Mike Dunaway said, “ in our swing, the hips swing the arms around the swing circle center”. As a swing coach, or coach in general (I coach leadership and management), we forget more than we remember and I have to constantly remember to “start at the beginning with the end in mind.” Too many internet teachers in order to drive likes and subscribes (I get that), isolate the movements without the connection to the entire swing,, which can result in an injury or not developing the correct feels. I did this initially, and hurt my left writs in the process because I did not understand the drill from a fundamental start and release point. I like the fact that you demonstrate😅 the “through point” and the fact that you never really end up in that full extension of the left wrist. In regards to your back, what does your warm up routine look like? I think this is a great opportunity to show your subscribers how you warm up to avoid back injury. A good idea that I have embraced is “turning on the pelvic floor”, which I taught as a cycling instructor. This involves doing Kegals the right way (which is the same with any muscle - working towards breathing properly and contraction AND relaxation. If you practice some of these exercises and turn on your core 25% right before you actually the hip movement, the four muscles of your pelvic floor will protect your back, AND you can achieve a 10% - 15% improvement in distance. Sorry to go on, but I like the fact that you are doing this from the 6 handicapper perspective! Keep up the good work!
@HolyGrailOfGolf4 ай бұрын
My warm up is usually just finding a spot where I can swing and take a few nice healthy divots. I rarely hit balls prior to playing because like Bruce Litzke said, “when I hit balls on the range I tend to mess with my swing and I like it just the way it is.” If I do hit balls it’s just a few and when people say, “you’re done already?” My answer is, “I can’t hit it any better.” As far as protecting the back, I think back injuries happen because people are trying to perform an unnatural motion. Basically, they’re trying to swing sideways, toward the target or down the target line and that simply isn’t the way the body or the golf club works. The golf club sends the ball sideways when we swing it straight forward in the direction we’re facing at address, which is why we stand parallel to the target line. This is what makes the golf club such a unique tool. No other tool works like it. Clearly, you’ve put a lot of thought into the golf swing but everything you’ve said is based upon the idea that we swing sideways. Once you realize that we actually swing forward, in the direction we’re facing at address, everything you’re talking about happens naturally and automatically. The golf swing is actually a very simple motion because the golf club does about 80% of the work for you, if you let it. We know this as “effortless power.” I’m working on a video that explains all this in a way that I think everyone can easily understand. I call it the “geometry of golf” because as it turns out it’s all about 90º and 180º angles.

Wow! I think this is why I tend to come over the top. I have been rotating (pronating) the right wrist too early at times...just after contact or right at contact. This might come from tennis...on both the forehand and serve, pronation happens through the ball but the feeling is way different than this release. The release feels a lot more like a defensive lob where my opponent has me out of position and all I can do is throw up a high lob to give me time to get back into the point. This release is what I feel when I hit my longest drives...every other round or so I will hit one a country mile...it's a unique feeling with the wrists...the other day I was on a 365 yard hole and I pulled it slightly and ended up only 15 yards from the front of the green...it was basically a 340 yard drive! This could be very tough to ingrain because I have been playing competitive tennis since I was 9!

I was told when I was 21 and went get my nose straightened out (deviated septum from birth), "You're nose is small on the outside and it's even smaller on the inside." I can barely breath through it most of the time. When I speak to a person I breath normally but when I'm just talking to just the camera I tend to talk too long and run out of breath. Talking to a camera is not as easy as it looks. It also depends on the microphone I use. The newer one doesn't pick up breath sounds as much.

Just looked at multiple pics of Mike Austin at impact and post impact and he is not doing what you are saying. Do you think this was just a feel he had? Like Vijay do you think he is simply feeling like he is releasing/loosing the right hand slightly at impact? Vijay is obviously almost taking his right hand off but maybe Mike was loosing the grip to prevent the hook?
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
In several videos Mike Austin describes this motion. Like I say in the video you won't be able to see it in a real swing and I'm exaggerating it greatly here for illustration purposes. Mike did talk about this preventing the clubface from turning over too quickly.
@TheSeer1013 жыл бұрын
@@HolyGrailOfGolf You are right. Mike talks about slapping hinging at the ball. Interesting because it is one cure for the hook. Greg Mchatton talks a lot about letting the right hand off to free up the left side post impact.

@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
The basic cause of wrist breaking down is swing in the wrong direction. If you believe you need to swing straight down the target line toward the target you have to cast out all your lag and then pull the club down the target line. It's like turning a golf swing into a giant putting stroke at the last minute. If you haven't seen my Holy Grail playlist have a look and that should change everything.

@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
No, because we're not flexing the right wrist we're pushing the right arm forward like you're trying to push your right hand down the shaft and the fingers get pulled to the left causing the right wrist in to flexion. If that makes sense.
@cch0683 жыл бұрын
I tried this today and i think im liking the results. What is the feeling you went with when you tried it out? Are you thinking about turning through the shot and not being afraid to let the right hand release in that flipping type action or something else? Curious as to what your swing thought or feeling was with that right hand.
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
Well, like I said I'd watched some Count Yogi videos and never really thought about trying it until I hurt my back just before our tee time. I figured, what the hell, I'll give it a try, I can't hardly move as it is so why not. I was really surprised with the results so I figured it might be a good idea for those less mobile and flexible. Ok, so to answer more specifically, it's not a flip or slap with the right hand it's a pushing forward with the right arm. When you feel it, you'll know it. It's hard to describe, but it's very natural when you do it right. Actually, it feels so natural, it doesn't feel like you're doing anything. Like many things in golf just thinking about it differently makes you move differently and although it doesn't feel different, the results tell you that it is.

Mike taught me that once you set up the target is the ball, not the destination point of the ball. From the top of the backswing you come down at a 45 degree angle to the flight line. For those interested I've posted lots video clips with Mike Austin providing me, and others, lessons. Enjoy!
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeaustinrules4213 Yes, I agree completely. We learn to hit the ball and then figure out where it goes and we learn to align or set up knowing this to be fairly consistent. Once you set up the ball, hitting it, must be your objective. Really that's problem with golf, people set up to the ball and then try to swing toward the target. It's really hard to look one way and swing another. Everyone looks in the direction they're swinging and if they're not, you can tell because it's a very awkward and unnatural motion. I think the only reason people don't talk about swinging at the target line is that it's such a simple concept that no one seems to have ever questioned it. I've never heard anyone ask, "What direction do I swing," but that's the first thing everyone should ask but everyone just assumes it's toward the target because it is in every other sport. The only people that get this right are children. Children only think, "hit ball," so they swing at it and then figure out where it goes.
@chuckross88393 жыл бұрын
MA swings 45 degree to the back of the ball on plane. Has a fully connect left peck , which is advanced by the ankles, knees, hips torso . Golfers just don't get it . They are told this but never open there eyes or ears to what he says. Supple Quickness . Only way to be Pure swinging .

Is the move primarily an active palmar flexion of the right wrist, a dorsiflexion move of the left wrist, or a combination?
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's either, really. Both of those happen by not by intent but rather cause and effect. By making your right arm too long it's just the only thing that can happen. You allow it to happen rather than make it happen.
@roberthaar3 жыл бұрын
@@HolyGrailOfGolf just what I am led to understand. Mile Austin said the hand/wrist release is like throwing a frisbee with your left hand. An active move. I guess if their is enough centripetal force created by hip torso rotation and extension it is “allowed to happen”. Otherwise it has to “made to happen. Thoughts?
@HolyGrailOfGolf3 жыл бұрын
@@roberthaar Sure. The thing is when you allow it to happen it happens as fast as it can. When you make it happen it happens as fast as you can make it happen. When we allow it to happen our wrists actually can't keep up with the speed of the club it's happening so fast.
