I get where you are coming from by this statement, but I think what is more important is how we respond to / receive correction. If when confronted with sins we are committing we just deflect / deny / distract and never repent and ask for forgiveness, that is much more concerning. We have been given a mandate to hold one another to account (Matt. 18) and have the standard of God's word to see how we are measuring up (miserably, each and every one of us). Keep holding up the mirror of the law to show one another how dirty we are, but don't forget that it isn't the mirror that gets us clean; It is the gospel of Christ that does that. Love one another enough to speak the truth, repent and ask for forgiveness and grant it abundantly.

The Bible also says to be quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry. The pitfall of the discernment community is quickness to condemn even those who are clearly agreeing with them…if you’d just read more carefully. Even when judging, Jesus says to judge rightly. There’s nothing wrong with saying someone is wrong. Just make sure they actually are.

Long before Chan defended Bickle, he began to compromise. I got suspicious about 8 years ago when he'd end his sermons with protracted, whining prayers, on one knee, always near "tears". It was becoming hard to bear. He was starting to make every sermon the Francis Chan show. Before that, he was fairly impressive with his selflessness and willingness to stick to Scripture. Since that time, he has not only defended dodgy preachers, but he's become a voice for ecumenism, and tries to lead genuine Christians toward Catholicism.

This is just a personally anecdotal reflection. I used to go to KC back when it was aligned with Vineyard. Ran into Mike Bickle, Paul Cain and Bob Jones in a hallway during a conference. I interrupted something and I have seldom felt so creeped out. Nothing, not even a word, was passed but I was changed. I started looking closer at leaders. Quit going to Vineyard. It wasn’t many years later that the truth started to be revealed. Mike Bickle is the last of those three to be exposed but that only means the corruption is very deep with many layers of protection. This is so disturbing and keeps happening again and again. I knew a child abuser. His personality was outwardly warm and fuzzy, and he would speak christian terms freely, went around hugging everyone and gained trust easily. He was in leadership positions in many churches.There were countless women and even a few men that covered for him and allowed him to hurt over one dozen children----even their own children. He died without spending any time in court or prison over it ,yet God's eyes were aware of all these things. God sees the perpetrators and also the enablers that misuse the church systems and even misuse the grace of God to intimidate and shame those who seek to protect innocent human beings and speak truth. If there were underage or nonconsensual participants then maybe the police would be involved. Otherwise it's legal from a criminal law perspective. If there are Alienation Of Affection laws in the states where Bickle plies his shtick then maybe spouses can sue for broken out disrupted marriages, but that's likely a civil, not criminal, matter.

At the risk of sounding like a leftist, someone can “consent”, and still be a victim because of spiritual abuse that had taken place. That said I agree. That’s not necessarily criminal. Just really, really gross. And I’m willing to reserve judgment. But just the fact that his own close ministry pals stood up and said what they said, and live streamed it for all to see and critique, speaks volumes. If true, you’d have a hard time convincing me that one or more of them didn’t know something. And they have to know how it looks. And understand. I’m not gloating at all. I’m very sad for the victims of the abuse, spiritual, sexual or otherwise. I already anticipate all the victim blaming that will transpire during the fallout. And for Mikes family. How horrible. And right before the holidays. I also find the sermon he preached the Sunday before kinda gross. Whether he’s guilty or not he knew what was coming down the pike and used his platform to go on the offensive before it happened. Kinda hard to say “God will vindicate me” all the while preaching g a sermon that was a way of gaslighting and manipulating his audience before they even knew of the allegations. Just my two cents.

The foundational issue with Bickle is his so called "prophetic history". If it is true, all Christians are bound to follow, support, and promote IHOP. If his "prophecies are not true, he is a false prophet and should be called out, marked, and avoided. Even if his personal life is sqeaky clean & his prophecies are false, he is still a wolf.

He is troublesome and like you said here, he gives cover to false teachers. In Pastor Jim Osmans book God Doesn’t Whisper he gives examples of Storms and others using scripture out of context to justify “hearing” God speak to them and that it should be normative for all believers. This is so wild y’all. I was pretty involved with ihop many years ago and I was happy to distance myself from ihop recently as I’ve come into more truth but I always loved Mike and saw him as a genuinely pure biblical pastor. The only real red flag I saw was his associations with other false teachers. It bothered me and I didn’t understand it because I really believed he was the real deal. Not perfect by any means but a real one. A good one. Turns out he was a legit wolf in sheep’s clothing.

This is what his spiritual brothers and sons were willing to call him after a few months of interviewing people whose experiences spanned 32 years. And you’re telling me we don’t know ANYTHING?? Allen Hood was one of the signers on the initial findings letter I’m describing. Where are you getting this idea that no one knows anything?

Thank you for your work on this. Almost 20 years ago I was part of a small denomination that split due to the sexual immorality at the leadership level, which in turn led to the collapse and a split in my church within that denomination I belonged to. It is painful to go through. And the impulse for denial and circling wagons is strong. In my situation, it was reading blogs by members of the denomination that I found out about the trouble. I could get no answers at the time by my pastors who dismissed the internet stories as ‘attacks of the enemy’ (and yes this organization was charismatic). Nothing was said to the congregation until one Sunday the pastor announced we had to leave the larger family for reasons that were left unspecified and but we were assured were necessary. The lack of transparency was troubling. But I have also seen it in smaller ways in my current Reformed denomination when clergy in a sister church in our district were facing serious discipline problems and going through the judicial process of our denomination. We were told just to pray, but never told specifics, even though details were easy to find online. When I asked for specifics and clarifications about what I was reading, and so I would know what I was praying about, it was made clear to me to let the leadership take its course and trust and obey 5th commandment (the 4th Commandment for my Lutheran brethren). The impulse for leadership to lack transparency, to circle wagons around peers, to consolidate power, and to spin information to underlings is a human impulse. I have recently witnessed it in the downsizing of the company I worked for. But when churches and organizations that claim to represent Christ do it, it damages so many souls, inside and outside any specific situation. My prayers is the truth will be exposed, the enablers will publicly repent and step down from public ministry and submit to godly leadership, and the victims do not lose faith in the one true judge of the world and the savior of their souls.

Another thing about Chan….at the end of the video he’s talking about how he had a perception of a Bickle from seminary and learned he was wrong once he actually met Bickle and questioned him. Chan has clearly thrown out using his brain. First of all, there’s enough material by Bickle online to make a judgement about his theology and ministry. . Yes, you can learn more about a person by meeting them but apparently Chan Is easily fooled. Chan really needs to eat humble pie and start engaging his brain and stop relying on feelings. Honestly after watching these clips by Chan he comes across as being very emotionally manipulative too.

Emotionalism isn't Christianity. All heart and no brain is a serious problem, but so is all knowledge and no heart. Your "correct," knowledge of the Bible and Jesus won't save you. Heartless and spiritually-dead intellectualism isn't Christianity either. As James said, the demons believe and know that God exists and they probably know more facts about Him too. Knowing theology without love and a relationship with Christ makes you as demonic as they are.

I don’t think some people realise just how horrible this is. A “prophet” (extra emphasis on the quotations here because there’s no prophets today) manipulating God’s word (which in of itself is a grievance) to not take responsibility for causing GREAT trauma to God’s children. Not only that, but the trauma caused goes so deep into the psyche, that it changes a person neurologically. Which in turn changes EVERYTHING about a person. The victim is trying to make sense of what happened, while being shunned by the church and told it didn’t happen. Which causes MORE trauma. I cringe when I say this, but it’s the truth: the church looks up to these people as genuine leaders, speaking the truth of God in its proper context. But, they turn around and say someone’s trauma is irrelevant. What do you think that does to a victim as they approach being a follower of Christ? I’ll tell you this much, it’s not good.

Most everything was likely in circumstances that would appear "consensual between adults." No legal liability there unless Kansas or Missouri (?) have laws regarding "Alienation of Affection" like in North Carolina: "In North Carolina, you may sue an individual who has caused a married person to suffer the loss of affection of their spouse, so long as the marriage was peaceful and intact at the time of the affair." Even then it might be only a civil matter, not criminal.

As someone who was formerly a prolific liar and led a double life, I recognize the tactic of just not responding to, or only briefly and *broadly* discounting accusations as “not worth responding to” . If you simply don’t respond to questions or accusations, then in a real sense, they kind of just disappear in the minds if the people who want to believe the best about you. It’s all about controlling the narrative. We just have this tendency to think someone constantly responding to criticism *must* be trying to cover something. “Getting defensive is what guilty people do”, we tell ourselves, “people don’t respond to something that has no credibility”. Therefore, saying nothing makes people around you feel all is well; meanwhile the people who bring up legitimate accusations are made to look and feel crazy. Silence/ignoring is a powerful weapon for gaslighting.

It disturbs me that Francis Chan has attached himself to Mike Bickle's ministry. I have followed Franics for years and have always found him to be Biblical and a blessing in my life. Hopefully, since Mike has been exposed, it will prompt Francis to rethink his association and cause him to seek God to discover why he didn't discern that something was amiss with him. I pray that the victims received the help and healing that they need.
