"unless it's an imminent call to violence it's unethical to assault someone for what they say" -- spot on
@Solidfreeman012 ай бұрын
Ethics is a form of morality, which is supported by the largest parts of community. The communities vary vastly around the world. In the most parts of the world and also in those parts which have the biggest populations, ethics say, that much less than an imminent call to violence can be a reason for assault. Those are very western- liberal MORAL values, he talks about. Not even in the US everyone thinks like that about what is morally correct. Not by far. This is pretty much his individual stance without the support of ethics.

@@Solidfreeman01good points in the first paragraph but ethics is a branch of philosophy and separate from morality. Morality is cultural and reflects needs or ideals of society. Some branches of ethics (eg. utilitarianism) hold a principle of 'least harm /greatest good' therefore it would be correct to say it is unethical to harm someone unless they present a credible threat to you. The quote goes further and gives a condition of imminence. Morally, most societies have already concluded that verbal arguements do not justify physical assaults. There are exceptions as you mentioned, honour-based systems came to mind but they're pretty rare and generally on the decline. It's just not a recipe for a stable society.

But most liberals refuse to be capable of violence claiming it to be "uncivilised" and defer that violence to the state and then complain the state is now illiberal as it employs violence. Liberals fall over themselves constantly and wonder why people think they are dumb.

10:40 This is incredible similar to something my dad told a tough guy at work to chill out. In the 80's my dad helped manage a night club, and he eventually started having problems with one of the bouncers getting a little too aggressive with some of the more surly costumers. It got to a point he was practically starting fights instead of stopping them, and that's when he had to take him aside and give him a talking to. My dad politely reminded him to be a bit more gentle and a bit less abrasive with the problem customers, that he needed to be careful about pissing off the wrong people or getting into fights because you never know who you're dealing with and the club doesn't want any trouble. The guy initially responded in a typical macho, gym bro kind of way, basically doubling down on his ability to handle just about anybody. My father disagreed. When push came to shove and the guy basically asked "oh yeah, what would you do?" my dad told him straight up "I'd wait for you to go to the shitter, then while your ass was on the can I'd kick the door in and blast you with a shotgun." Few beats of silence went by, guy turned white. ".. never thought of that.." Needless to say, he started being a little more cordial in his duties as a bouncer, and he cleaned his attitude up.

Standard for bullies. People who always try to bring down someone else to make themselves feel higher in the hierarchy are generally more aware of this hierarchy, because it's important to them. So when they encounter people who are higher than them in this perceived hierarchy, they're way less likely to challenge them, than people who don't feel that hierarchy is important at all. This awareness of hierarchy is more noticeable in animals than people, and in school boys than adults. I think something is being lost here because they're having a casual conversation. He's not saying that "they had it coming" as a statement of fact or personal belief as to liability, he's speaking in the voice of the anger-blinded, wounded USA who is lashing out in the general direction of what/where it perceives to be the source of the threat. Mike is making the point that violence is terrible response. The fact that millions of innocent people who had nothing to do with the initial attack suffered greatly when the U.S. retaliated only underscores Mike's point that violence is a terrible response.

I read an article once that talked about how studies showed the personality traits people found most disagreeable and the “know it all” trait was high up there- which is why i think dr mike israetel has found a much larger following than other science based lifters here on KZbin (not that any of that disagreeableness justifies physical violence) Dr mike, especially on podcasts with other influencers always answer questions in an open fashion, always open to new ideas about training- and not completely shitting on the old way of doing things, and adopting more anecdotes(lets face it, exercise science is not really among the forefront in scientific certainty) which people find a lot easier to adjust to an agree to, and digest than something like - “X scientific study says you NEED to train in certain Y ways(usually some kind of minutia) to grow muscle in the best way possible/optimal way etc” you get the point.

For the people talking about cultures or places where what Mike did would be normal: I come from a neighborhood in Rio where you can absolutely get punch in the face for something you've said, I myself have been in both ends of these situations when i was young, so violence is kind of normal for me, but theres two things we need to take into account in that specific situation: 1. Jeff didnt said nothing that justifies getting assaulted. Even in "cultures" where violence is more normalized like mine, Mike would get fucked up on the block bc he hit someone weaker without any good reason (and Jeff is someone everybody likes). Organized crime is called organized for a reason. Where i come from in Rio the treatment for Mike in this case would be "madeirada" (portuguese for 3 or 4 dudes beating his ass with literal pieces of hard wood). 2. Yes, there are cultures and places where violence is kinda normal and all, but they live in fucking Canada, come on. Dont confuse people that pretend to be hard on the internet bc they workout with anything else other than that. We have literal video footage of Mike being a pussy when faced with someone willing to fight him. And again, they live in Canada. We talking about influencers that live in CANADA here. Maybe Mike is somewhat strong, maybe Mike can even fight, but in the hood you don't need hands to deal with someone like him, you only need a finger. And again: He. Is. Canadian. (Canadians in chat, im sorry, but you know what i mean)

such a good response. people defending mike are putting their own feelings in it. perhaps they are thinking back on a time where the "nerd" made them feel dumb, and they wanted to beat him up, but they were too scared of even a little nerd.. so they started doing roids to stand up to little nerds, and STILL back down from people close to them in size. Even in rough neighborhoods what mike did would get him jumped for sure. honestly he's lucky i wasn't in that gym and jeff's friend. i'm pretty dumb myself
@julianblake83852 ай бұрын
Yeah, man, I totally think the same. I come from Colombia, a historically violent country, and we here are very small in stature and rather thin and malnourished... but you just like you said, you don't need big muscles and to be 6.6 to deal with your enemies. Here people don't "fight" their enemies, if you know what I mean. You just need a finger, like you said. Or a friend of a friend of a friend with the right finger, and money to do the thing. Even this type of bullying or "tough guy-ing" is a First World privilege. In countries like ours we know that things don't go that way in real life. It goes way worse, and that teaches you to be humble and careful.
