When you look at the triathlon uber-cyclists of today, you think of Cam Wurf, Andrew Starykowicz, Sebastian Kienle, Magnus Ditlev, and Lionel Sanders, among others. But back in the 1980s, when the Big Four - Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Scott Tinley, and Scott Molina - dominated the sport, an uber-cyclist named Mike Pigg from Arcata, California burst onto the scene, knocked off the Big Four one by one and became one of the absolute best triathletes of all time. Just after his 58th birthday Mike Pigg and I had the opportunity to chat about his legendary career.

I've waited 33 years for this interview! Mike is such a legend in our sport - especially when it comes to aggressive riding. I recall noticing his forward position on the bike and trying to "be like Mike" whenever I rode. So fun to listen to his perspective.

What a great interview. I am an Ozzie and I raced triathlon back in the same era. It was the best time of my life, I had the fortune to be at the 94 Hawaii Ironman and met Mike Pigg. What a great guy and a beast on the bike. Pros and armatures all in together. Those were the days.

Bob, another great interview! Mike--my memory of you will always be from a picture in the Atlanta Constitution day after the Bud Light event where you were ripping open the top of a Coke water bottle with your teeth while on the bike. That passion, energy and desire to put out 100% was something we all admired and wanted to emulate. Thanks for doing the interview!!

I remember reading about Mike in Brad Kearns’ book. I’ve always wished I’d done my first triathlon when I was in my mid 20s and not 15 years later, I’ve lost so much fun!

Nice one Bob! I grew up with a pile of big 4 era triathlete magazines that I bought from a runners club yard sale in new Zealand. The photos and stories were huge inspiration and it's fun seeing interviews like this to meet the pros and animate the history.

Thanks Bob, another first rate interview with a legend in the sport. I did St. Croix in '89 and '91 and it was a huge thrill to be doing that event with the greatest in the sport -something I will cherish until I check out!

Ps. I remember making a seat extension to put on the old Paconi to move the seat forward a few inches and the best I could do was one hr flat chasing the mighty Mat Coburn @@teambarefoot
