I still remember the day , many years ago, I've listened for the very 1st time to "Images and Words": I was alone in my bedroom and my mouth fell open. I was completely blown away by how good that music was. I'm still blown away everytime I listen to that record now. Thanks Dream Theater!

it's not even their top 3 album. overrated
@MysticRhythmsLive5 жыл бұрын
@@spriestplayer2329 I don't think the people here are comparing I&W to their other albums. Obviously as time went on they got better, especially after Rudess came on the scene. Considering I&W was their second album (1st with LaBrie) and the period of time it came out, it was definitely a landmark achievement. Many still consider it their best album. It's all subjective, so to say it's overrated is a bit "over the top".
@Heatwave90002 жыл бұрын
@@MysticRhythmsLive Tbf in my opinion A Dramatic Turn of Events is a much improved version of images & words. The albums are very similar. I like how i&w has lots of energy but labries high asf vocals annoy me. Good vocalists can be understood even when belting high notes.

You lost me on FW and QR though - "Promised Land (1994, I&W's came out in 1992)" and the rest of FW's catalogue? Almost every FW album sounded different than the one before, and they had their own style of Prog for each imo :). I think all 3 bands (QR, FW and DT) inspired and influenced the 1st 3 waves of Prog Metal, and then others came along and broke the "formula" that Prog Metal was following for a time. But hey, I like it all. As long as the band's sound good to my personal ears :D.

To say no one was doing what they were doing back then is kind of ignorant. Obviously, 'Images & Words' was fairly different but Watchtower, Queensryche & Fates Warning basically laid the groundwork. Besides the monstrous musicianship on 'Control & Resistance', 'Perfect Symmetry' (FW) had an admiration for overall musicality in Progressive Metal that was missing at the time. To me, that album established what happens when you blaze your own path. I mean, 'Rage for Order' & 'Op M' provided the overall epic / dramatic & complex approach to the genre but that Fates Warning album really showed a maturity that I think influenced DT whether they admit to it or not. Seriously, I don't know how you could not reference such a masterpiece if you consider yourself a Prog head like Portnoy does.

Portnoy will always be a hero, inside or outside Dream Theatre. For me, DT lost it all after he left/got kicked out. Don’t get me wrong, Mangini is beyond great. But the magic was simply gone. Their material got weaker, their shows were handicapped by his absence (like watching a pole dancer without legs)

POW! . . . This is why Banger, I have said numerous times here at KZbin and at your Fb page, that Mike should have been a guest speaker on the Prog Metal Tree. I know that the man is SUPER busy with all his projects, but this is the guy I could "trust" with the knowledge of Progressive Rock and Prog Metal history, but have a cup of joe and talk all things Prog and Metal as if we were friends for years :). And because of this interview from a few years ago, how could you guys not have heard of/listened to; Watchtower and Fates Warning (as was said in 2 episodes of Locking Horns)? I'm glad FW stayed on the list and "why" because of the fans speaking out. But Watchtower is a great omission because they inspired other Thrash and Prog Metal bands to be over the top technical (Spiral Architect, early Sieges Even, Linear Sphere, Atheist, Memento Waltz, Manitou, Death/Control Denied - being Chuck Schuldiner was a huge fan, and many more), though Mekong Delta came at the same time, Watchtower got the exposure - they invented the music for the term, and super obscure sub-genre "Math Metal" (over a decade before "Mathcore" - hey, I didn't make the genre up). We now have tons of technical bands of all sorts of extremes (as well as Cynic inspiring those with "Fusion" elements) where the branches can be traced from its pioneers; Watchtower, Mekong Delta and Cacophony (and possibly for 2 albums, early Fates Warning). I hope you get to talk to Mike Portnoy at length again, maybe make it a duo with Mikael Akerfeldt, those 2 know their Prog (and especially Steve Wilson with Progressive Rock). Would also love to hear John Petrucci's take on Prog and Metal music :).
