What a fascinating paring for an interview between one of the biggest NFL legends ever and one of the biggest boxing legends ever. You can tell John respected Mike as a man whereas certain people in the media fear Mike more than they genuinely respect him.

Respect in the questions and the answers. Mike Tyson verbally tears apart many interviewers, but with Madden he's calm , cool, and collected, as if there's no need to dominate. Two greats.

Tyson often looks back and talks about how "stupid he was" some of the things he said and did in the past interviews, but you can show him this clip right here to prove thats not necessarily the case...we see in todays culture how some of these interviewers are trash, trying for clicks...same trashy interviewers back in the 80's and 90's...tyson could see right through them and didnt respect the slime that was trying to get a story by egging him on...Madden is not and interviewer interviewing Tyson, Madden is a man, talking to another man. Tyson could alway be humble even back in the day, but only to real people. BE REAL

It's irritating to watch those interviewers who don't respect and care about their craft, to do it properly but are using it as a way to get themselves in the presence and space of a legend, to verbally take shots at him, when they would never have the guts to do that off camera. It's shameful. The truth is, when Tyson dies he will be honored, celebrated, and remembered as one of the greatest of all time, and when those nobody interviewers die, nobody will care or remember who the hell they were. And that's a fact.

I think that what made Madden so at ease here was that when he was a coach he had to control a locker room full of players that were just a violent as Tyson, and he knew how to keep things relaxed.

Love it. Mike is 100% honest and relaxed; he doesn't have his guard up (pardon the pun) as he would with regular media folks that so often tried to bait him with questions that would generate a good soundbite or would ask questions about the dark times in his life. And Madden is just chatting-no prepared questions and no "gotcha" questions. As scary as Tyson was, Madden forged his legacy in locker rooms keeping 53 guys in check who were bigger, stronger and only slightly less salty than Tyson. There's no fear there--Tyson is just another elite athlete to him and the mutual respect is evident.

Mike knew here that he was not the same entity. You can tell by the way he answers the question, he doesn’t say now, he references fights from years previous and also references that the 4 year lay of must have taken its toll. He knows!

Legendary coach of a championship NFL team who coached that team to be tougher than any other franchise in the sport. If anyone could draw a measure of true respect out of Mike Tyson, its Madden.

It's Amazing that Mike is asking John madden R.I.P . Back then 27 years ago if he thought that any Quarterbacks actually became better with age or improved as they got older and John mentioned Steve Young who obviously made his mark and secured his legacy with the 49 er's. But when he started his career he was average if not mediocre with The Tampa bay Buccaneers . The current "Super Bowl Champions" and the current quarterback Tom Brady is unquestionably playing at the highest level of any quarterback in the history of football as a Veteran.

He seemed calmer with Madden than with other interviewers, but you can still tell he's guarded. I'm a lifelong Raider fan! Pete Banaszak was a neighbor Ken Stabler lived near my elementary school. Back in the day when most players had a job during the off-season! John Madden was my first coach. My first game memory was SB XI. I remember the players carrying him on their shoulders i was 6yrs old! I hate the 9ers and the Cowboys but I watched the games because coach was covering the game. The fact that John Madden (an NFL commentator not known as a sit-down interviewer) was assigned to interview Mike Tyson is awfully telling of two things: 1) How nervous people were at that time to deal with Mike Tyson i.e. who can we get to interview him that he won't erupt on? 2) How universally respected John Madden was. Madden was going to conduct a fair and respectful interview and Mike Tyson was going to reciprocate.

You could tell Tyson was ready to fight Madden, to get in his face, to challenge him, to scream at him, to cause a scene because so many media figures had treated him like an angry animal, a freak show, an uncontrollable madman. Instead, Madden treated him with respect and dignity and slowly over the course of the interview Tyson starts to relax, to loosen his shoulders, to relax his face, to quiet his voice and turn that energy into positive vibes. They said Madden was a great coach because he sincerely cared about his players. He treated them like family. You can see this with him and Tyson, because you get the feeling Madden was really interested in what Tyson had to say. Listening to the this interview. Madden asks Tyson questions that a coach would ask players without pushing for deeper answers for questions like the media usually does on athletes. Madden didn't annoy or be disrespectful to Tyson which is the biggest key when interviewing. Tyson's response was honest and straightforward to Madden's questions, but he was leant on Madden because Tyson isn't a football player (Tyson did mention this in the interview). Overall, great interview by Madden because you could see how Tyson respected Madden because Madden didn't push or poke Tyson like the media usually does when asking questions.
