Man I love Punch-Out. New ones come out very infrequently, but they almost don't need to - it's gotta be one of those series that everyone just knows, even if they don't know they know it. Good stuff. Since I'd basically be saying variations of that on each video, instead I'll do thoughts on the individual fighters for these. Like the video itself, only much shorter and more surface-level stuff. Glass Joe - The best, because he's the worst. You kinda have to admire a man who's been in 100 professional bouts, even if most of them are losses. Takes a lot of guts to always stand back up, especially if that's all you can boast. Infinitely better than Gabby Jay despite canonically losing to him. Von Kaiser - I'm biased against him for petty reasons due to an online game I used to play, but I also have a bit of a soft spot for him for the same reasons. I like that he comes across as a bit of a nervous wreck - still a jobber like Joe before him, but you get the impression that he probably was a decent boxer at some point. Makes for a fun sliding scale of difficulty represented by characterization. Also - best mustache in the series. Piston Honda - In a game where everyone's a stereotype, you have to appreciate Nintendo's ability to poke fun at themselves, too. He has some of the better quips in the game (there's something undeniably catchy about "TKO from Tokyo"), so there's a bit of hometown love, too. I'm reasonably sure I was leveled by the Honda Rush my first time or two, which I suppose is sort of the point. Good early boss.

First off, I find the thesis of this video---that Punch-Out defined the concept of "boss fight" for generations to come---very interesting considering that while Punch-Out is this unique game that doesn't quite fit into genre categories, boss fights seem to litter almost ever kind of game, occasionally popping up even in genres ill-suited to them, like puzzle games. Secondly, and it might be a bit too early in the series ask this... how do you feel about Super Punch Out and Punch Out Wii? With such a groundbreaking act to follow, do they really compare? Wii certainly does a good job building distinct and memorable characters, but I wonder if even that is enough to live up to such a legacy...
@DesigningFor4 жыл бұрын
Punch-Out Wii is excellent. Its animation is exceptional, it has the most content thanks to having the greatest variety of boxers, having a new one, and having refights for everyone except Donkey Kong, it keeps the gameplay incredibly faithful and even improves it in some ways (I like how Bear Hugger teaches you the duck, for example, that was always a bit underutilized in Mike Tyson's). Super Punch-Out's not bad, but it's a different kind of game entirely, more in line with what the arcade games were. I personally greatly prefer the emphasis on puzzle-like elements that Mike Tyson's and Wii provide, but if you want a more action-forward title then it can be a good time. The theming is all kinds of lamer, though. Nick Bruiser vs. Mike Tyson? No contest.

11:12 pretty funny that he uses that picture if you know what the next one is in the game.

Glass Joe actually beat me in my first several matches against him. I beat him a few times with body blows alone only to get stumped on the following boss before I found out the controls for uppercutting, LOL.

I find him harder than von kaiser for some reason 😂

@@MeepMacArthur Once I learned how to consistently beat Glass Joe, I never once had an issue with Von Kaiser. I didn't even know Von Kaiser had a gimmick for how you're supposed to beat him until watching this video (or most of the other early game guys). I didn't notice anything special about how I fought anyone between Glass Joe and King Hippo, and have still never once thrown a Star Punch.

Nice analysis. It's hard as we play many generations of games to relive the feeling of experiencing games for the first time. The best games of yesteryear capitalize on the core concepts that still makes game's enjoyable today.

I want to see a sequel to Punch Out where a retired Little Mac trains a new upcoming Boxer or goes back into the ring to prove he still has the Star Punch in him.

Better yet, I'd love to see a prequel to Punch Out Wii where you play as Doc Louis in his prime.

Ah yes the prequel to Shadow of the Colossus. Or is it a demake? Either way, I've actually never played a Punch Out game in my life, only watched friends and it's always a hype time no matter what. To have something as simple as boxing become this interwoven, complicated and well designed puzzle and reaction game (especially as early as it came out) is masterful. Stoked for this series! (Too bad Mac still sucks in SSBU though...)

Honestly Mike Tyson not being able to beat Glass Joe makes a lot of sense. Punch Out is a game where you have to play from the mindset of being the physically disadvantaged underdog and I don't think Mike has a lot of experience being in THAT position.

The SNES Super Punch-Out was a really awesome game. I dunno about the Wii version, and I never really played the NES one, but I had a lot of fun with the SNES one. Such a variety of fights, each having their own list of 'things' about them, and they kept the comedic relief from the first and jacked it up to 11 with utter silliness, but yet still made it work, and there were a variety of ways that once you got good at the game you could have fun just wrecking its fighters. Aran Ryan hates being nailed with super punches and says your little punches can't faze him. Oh really? I've found that a couple speed punch barrages will stun him and cause him to wobble about. THEN he gets the big punch and he goes down like a sack of potatoes, for example.

The thing is, not a lot of people do this at all. I’ve tried to get my friends to try and play this and they didn’t even attempt to meet the game at it’s level and just kept complaining that there’s no tutorial after wondering why just literally punching isn’t working.
