Great video and tutorial how to. I came here to see how to use laser but realized how high level of professionalism you have comparing to masons in my country. I never saw on small construction sites like this, that anyone used laser for leveling of concrete floor and calculating the volume of concrete. Everyone would just ordered little more than they calculate BY TAPE MEASUREMENT and pour the extra left concrete out in the wild. I hope that we would one day get to this level of professionalism. Greetings from Croatia.

-Yea, the laser level has been a huge money saver in the construction industry for sure. It cuts down the labor cost by 50% for any leveling operation like this. -People always get confused with it when trying to figure out if the sensor should go up or down on the rod. I always found it helpful to tell people, “Don’t think about where the sensor is on the rod, bcz it’s just a random setup. Rather pay attention to what’s happening to the bottom of the rod, bcz that’s really the business end of the tool.”

I can remember using a "transit" and grade stick years ago. I still have my first one. Two man operation to do grades like in the video. I could have explained the receiver and grade stick a little better, I will in the next one. Good tip.

@@MikeDayConcrete Hey Mike, I just read a comment on ‘Essential Craftsmans’ latest video from ‘Ernie White’ and he was complaining that stamp-crete is too slippery when wet and should only be used for interior use only. Is this something you’ve encountered? If so, is there a way to add some ‘grit’ to it.
@lowercaseCAPS4 жыл бұрын
Exactly right... I remember the light bulb went on for me when my brain said "don't think of it as 'moving the receiver up' from 23 to 28 (for example), but rather think of it as 'moving the rod down' (if you're lowering the level line). That receiver is the stationary thing and the rod is moving up or down, depending on your target height.

@@psidvicious I added grit to my stamped walk, did not help, I had to block off the walk in the winter. I have been considering not resealing when the sealer wears off.

Amazing video!!! you marked 21.5 inches above the sill and then you raised it 6.5 inches to 28 inches. Wouldnt that be pouring 6.5 inches of concrete not 4 inches?

Are the bolts in the nuts on those pier is going to be below the concrete? If so don’t you have to expose the nuts in case something needs to be replaced?

Love these videos , Im 22 years old and i’ve been working for my uncle as a mason helper / laborer .. I love the trade but hate doing the labor its hard work. making cement .. moving 12” blocks all day when its 90 degrees .. labor is no joke !! So I started my own mason company now I have 2 masons and 2 helpers working for me ... I love these videos so much knowledge for someone who is just starting off their business. How did you learn to read construction plans thats my biggest obstacle right now .... do you provide any classes ? Willing to pay .. love your videos from New Jersey!

How do you make sure that the vertical beam your receiver is attached to is perfectly vertical ? Or is that not a major concern, as in the fact that a slight tilt of the vertical beam that the receiver is mounted on does not matter so much ?

He was given a datum to work off which was the top of the cell , so he used the laser to identify that as the “0” point . His top of concrete level is 6 inches below that cell , therefore for him to be able to identify the top of concrete level he has moved the receiver up 6 inches on the staff to identify top of concrete level. In simple terms from your “0” point ( the initial level your working off) , if you need to go below that point e.g excavating , receiver goes up , if your going above e.g pouring or backfilling , the receiver goes down . Hope this helped

Haha, no radiant heat in this one. The manual one is good, I still have my old one, but I really like the self-leveling one.

If you take into consideration the man-hours saved by using the laser level instead of the man-U-el level, it should pay for itself in just a few jobs.
