Nicely done I like to make a wet pasty mix with straight portland and brush it on with an application brush on the back of the stone before I lay it I will also brush the concrete with it too before I put my mortar down but everyone has there own unique way of doing things that’s why I love masonry work so much

In the uk and Ireland we use specialist bags or tubs of powder slurry mix that you apply to the back of the paving prior to laying into your bedding mix and it bonds them together so well they will never come apart . But a pasty mix of straight Portland cement works as well .

for non high loads i've thought about making my own rebar from stainless steel. grandpa used galvanized guide/guy wire anchors when he poured his patio, it lasted till after his death when we got a skid loader to but up the pad. the "rebar" still looked like a new anchor minus the 90 degree bend in it to fit inside the pad.

Mike. Awesome steps. The comment you made on using smaller rebar will save me a huge rework. Question on grout . I am always worried about cleaning up the stone after grouting. You say water comes to the top , looks like you let the grout sit ontop of the stone and then just scrub it off later with water!? Am I missing something? You started sponging off the excess but even the. It looked like you had way more left to remove

Though I've never used it before, I'm going to use pink fiberglass rebar in my upcoming project. It is said to be stronger than steel rebar, it won't rust or swell, and should last 10 times longer than steel rebar. I guess I'll find out. If it'll just last until after I'm dead I'll be happy.

Hello Mike. And Jack too. You may or may not remember, but my boss and I were the electricians that were there on your last day when you cleaned everything up. We were there to repair the conduits to the pillars that day and we accidentally interrupted your wrap up summary. Sorry about that. Your clever editing seemed to take care of that. Once the owner got the lights we went back to install them on the pillars. It all came together very nicely. Anyway, nice to meet you and Jack! Great video. I've been a subscriber ever since that day. BTW, we work with AL D sometimes too. Small world.

Hi Mike, you've mentioned many times in the past and showed where rebar rusts over time and makes the concrete fail. So while you mentioned you put that in to help with the frost and movement, what about the rusting and corroding of that metal down the road? I always learn something from your videos, thanks for doing them.

Mike, Thanks for all the great videos. I homeschool my 15 year old son and use them to teach him about different trades. He currently shadows a master carpenter a few days a week. Our town doesn’t have these formal schooling opportunities so I made them happen for him the best I can. We’ve learned so much from you about masonry! My only question on this video is with the existing patio. The S mortar that cracked/crumbled you showed did you have to chip it all out and redo with 2-1 sand/Portland? I’m sure that’d be a lot of work, but would that fix the problem? I’m thinking yes, but you are the expert. Curious minds want to know. 😊 Thank you and God bless.
