I'd also like to share my thoughts on alcohol in terms of how it shapes and determines your social life. Refraining from drinking helps you verify your social circle and exposes insincere friendships. I was struck at my observations when I announced giving up alcohol. I didn't expect to experience so many shifts in my friends' behaviour, the way some of them treat me and general attitude towards me. I've also come to realisation that no relationship found exclusively on alcohol/partying is durable. In short, some people tried to use my decision to their advantage, and began to ask me much more frequently for favours such as driving them to parties, home, taking care of them when they were drunk, and sadly, most of them haven't repaid me for those requests in any way, it actually only triggered a chain reaction of perpetual requests from them. On other ocassions, such as weddings I felt socially excluded, somehow ostracised and labelled as a weirdo just because I didn't want to drink more than 2 shots just to raise the toast. There's of course much more to that, but I finish it here.

Same here. I think it lowers serotonin levels very drastically for a few days after use. The reason I say this is because if I take 5-htp (Serotonin Precursor) I feel MUCH better. This is a temporary fix though and should never be used as a cure. Alcohol is horrendous on your brain and body. I would say it's the most damaging substance that's so easily accessible. My issue is stopping when I start. A litre of vodka will be knocked back fairly quickly and I'm just a mess. I choose to not consume it now unless I'm on holiday or it's a very special occasion. I feel 10x better for stopping it.

I can go months without alcohol, but tend to have a night out with a mate every 2-3 months and drink a fair amount. Tends to make me feel depressed the next day. But its also good to get out and potentially meet people as otherwise my life is work and gym. My gym buddy drinks quite heavily every weekend but has that stocky build rather than being ripped. I'm skinnier than him and couldn't drink anywhere near as much. So I drink on certain occasions. Alcohol itself doesn't interest me that much, but being slightly socially awkward alcohol makes me more sociable etc. The main attraction for wanting to go out is meeting women (if im single). If I was already with a great woman I would be more inclined to stay in. I guess for how often I go out/drink the impact is minimal.

Ten years into daily drinking, I noticed symptoms, but never severe hangovers still. But without any symptoms at all, I doubt I would’ve reconsidered whether alcohol was bad to be using or not. Or maybe I wouldn’t have thought of it til I got some kind of real health diagnosis later in life. I think now that I’ve privately committed to myself that I am not drinking alcohol for an indefinite time, I’m feeling the pressure from others’ discomfort. I used to think not drinking was boring too, but it’s almost reversed now. I hope more people continue to get sober curious.

My deepest regret is having spent 4 years working in a bar/niteclub during my time in University in Ireland. That was 1998 - 2002. I regret working in an establishment where we allowed young people to get ridiculously drunk, served alcohol to people who'd had enough, allowed "rounds" to go on long after it was time for everyone to stop. The owners made a lot of profit and the young customers (generally 18 - 25) spent huge amounts of money to get packed into that dump on Friday and Saturday night. Its closed now. The best thing for it. I knew a generation would come along who wouldn't accept that kind of weekly socialising. They want other things now like gyms, restaurants, late bars, concerts, football etc. Long may that continue. Ya, they'll have a drink, often plenty, but not the kind of binge drinking stupidity I played a part in allowing. If anyone I served is reading this, I truly am regretful. We let people down. I've always had a mantra that if it wasn't funny back then, its not funny now.

I'm not sure what age demographic you are talking about, but I'm 26 and binge drinking is still rife within my age group, even binging on coke nowadays. I still find it hard to find to get people to socialise without drink being involved, it's so embedded in our culture. Fairplay that you actually feel some sort of regret, shows you're a good person and really care about other people. It's not your fault, we are surrounding by drinking from a young age so it's normalised and when you start knacker drinking in your teens, it's seeing as this benign thing which it obviously isn't

@@colin6673 Knacker drinking - Haven't heard that expression in ages! Thanks for reply. Yes, coke is now a real issue. From my own experience as a chronic drinker, and now almost 30 years of continuous sobriety, I am fascinated with the various experiences people have, or have had with alcohol. There are people who can drink one beer, start on another, but only drink half of that and walk away. (When I worked as a bartender, I thought THAT was insanity.) There are people who drink that start to encounter negative consequences, but are able to stop completely without help, and go about their lives. Then, there are millions of people around the world who, unbeknownst to them, begin the progression into alcoholism. For me, that happened at a fairly early age. By the time I was 18, I was a daily drinker, which negatively impacted every aspect of my life. One of the most important parts of my sobriety, was recognizing that my addictive behavior was present long before I ever took a drink. I was born with the "more is better" gene. It was imperative that I accepted that about myself. It made it much easier for me to STOP focusing on "not drinking", and start focusing on the root problem...ME. I am beyond grateful that I don't have that mental, physical, and emotional tug of war with alcohol on a daily basis. I sincerely wish you all the best Mike!

Watching this video it was like hearing myself talking. I'm 48 and I was 25 years old when I started to drink. Almost 3 years ago I realized all the damage that I was doing to myself by consuming alcohol and how affected me in my relationships including with God. I knew that I needed a change in my life. How can you change if you don't make changes in your life? I've learned to have control of my mind and not vice-versa and now I can have 1 0r 2 drink max just as you said Mike. I feel healthier, more focused and I even wrote a book about it and I mentioned you as one of the person that inspired me to be a better version of myself. Continue with your great job and inspiring so many people💪👍

Great video Mike. I have found that abstinence is easier than moderation. About 3 years now. But you're right, you need to be sorted out yourself, because the social pressure is enormous. And the studies are clear - there is no safe level of consumption.

Spot on with your alcohol advise Mike. And if you think training, or working, or functioning after drinking is tough in your early 30's, just wait until you hit your 50's! It's brutal!

Whenever I choose to not drink, it always slaps me across the face how many hours a night Im wasting on getting buzzed from booze. Especially being a musician, those evening and late night hours are my sweet spot for writing and recording. Not to mention evenings are performance times too. A good tip for anyone wanting to cut down or quit, choose things to do during the hours you'd usually be drinking. Ive started to draw epsom salt baths for myself around those times to calm my body and mind instead of a few doubles of blanco tequila. Another good idea would be to move your workout times to the evening. This way you have an a built in excuse not to drink.
@brooksorlando48812 жыл бұрын
If you can do it in moderation, it's ok. I couldn't do that in my 20s. It was either I was out partying all night or I would stay in. Now being 33, I can do something more low-key..have a few drinks and call it a night. It's such a fine line though with alcohol. There are varying reasons why people overuse it. Where that threshold is when it becomes a problem in your everyday life and deteriorates your health varies person-to-person

Mike I just wanted to say that I really love the way your content has evolved over the past few years ... besides overall improved quality of the vlogs, I love videos in which you share your thoughts and knowledge to others I believe it's always good to hear "second-hand" opinion on literally everything. As a guy that went through a lot of "crazy party" phases I think it's good that you share to younger generations what happens with their body when they party a bit over the top and as a bonus it's nice to see your own experiences sometimes in video format which we find funny and u find ... a bit odd the next day which is completely normal. Regarding the video, you are not the only one that suffers the next day ... same goes for me ha ha Not only does my head hurt but I feel like I am about to throw up anything I eat From what I've gathered over the years ... as with everything in life moderation is KEY and regarding the sleep patterns... people usually believe that alcohol helps them fall asleep easier which is true but It impacts your REM and deep sleep phase (it shortens it alot and u sometimes you skip those phases) which is key for recovery, so guys... don't make it a habit by drinking everytime before you go to sleep it will just fk you up in the long run ... in many ways

Good point! I was drinking 14 drinks in a week almost a year ago. I cut it down to 6 and now 1 to 2. Having two in a week it’s enough for me. Better sleep, saving money, and feeling great . Don’t drink a lot. Moderation is vital!

I’m 24 but I’ve been thinking the EXACT same thoughts recently. Drinking most weekends since I was 18 and it’s just not serving me anymore. It is fun and I do have some laughs, but I think drinking weekly is doing more bad than good. I didn’t drink in August or May and I think I’m going to start cutting back significantly to like once a month or something. Those months I didn’t drink I was so much sharper, happier and more motivated tbh

I had an incredible physique between 2011 and 2013. During those years I went out partying A LOT! I could drink non stop and be perfectly fine the next day. 2014 is when my physique was suffering because of alcohol. I was still hitting the gym but my strength and ability to stay lean became extremely difficult. I didn't stop partying and drinking... and it impacted me massively. Now, if I drink ANYWHERE near what I used to, I will feel it no less than 3 days after and at some points it brings me down mentally. It's all fun and games when you're out partying but I guarantee you, it WILL catch up to you big time in the long run.

Father time waits for nobody when it comes to drink. The post drinking depression is real. It takes me at least one day to recover physically and two days to recover mentally from drinking anything over 12 units. Back when I was in my teens and early 20s it literally had 0 effect but now I'm 30 my body definitely tells me that it's not good for me.

I drank like a fish for nearly 20 years, even won countless drinking completions on rugby tours and military man tests etc, but then I was determined to stop smoking and I had to stop drinking because it was a major trigger for me stopping smoking, I have now completely stopped smoking for over 4 years too. Over the first two years I never touched a drop of alcohol and my health and life completely transformed for the better and I wished I done it sooner, the last couple of years I maybe have one or two beers two to three time a year when I feel like it but I still feel so much better. My best bro said to me the other day that the amount of drink I have a year now, I used to drink in an hour back in the day, and I feel so much better now I have stopped regular drinking and stopped smoking completely.

This is definitely the way. I stopped drinking altogether during lockdown and just haven’t picked it back up and honestly feel so much better. I wasn’t a heavy drinker to begin with, always capping myself at 2-3 drinks, but even 1 drink will ruin my night of sleep, so it just isn’t worth it.

Well said Mikey boy!! I’m 34 and had a good innings partying wise….. my mrs is 10 weeks pregnant and I’ve knocked booze on the head since then.. this is what I’ve noticed…. 1. More money 2. Better shape body wise 3. Big career progression 4. Constantly happy 5. More clarity on life 6. Better skin 7. Seeing parents more 8. More sport 9. Less arguments with the wife 10. Nicer to people I could go on for days with this list! And the only negatives are not feeling that proper “high” when out in the mix of music and party goer’s. I can deal with that though! Great video and I’m looking forward to seeing how successful you’re gonna be. Let’s get some watch/car content soon 🔜 bro 😎

I would drink 2 wine coolers and munch on a bag of chips as I sat in a park overlooking the harbor. I got a nice little buzz which lasted a few hours and I was fine the next day. If I drank more than that I turned into a maniac. Did terrible things and ended up sick for a week.

I identify so strongly with this. I get the exact same thing. I gave up alcohol January 4th 2018 but had a few beers on the Queen's Jubilee and then ended up going out every other weekend again so I kinda fell off the wagon unfortunately. But that was a few months ago and I noticed I was still getting hangovers so could see nothing had changed! So i made a conscious decision a few weeks ago to quit (again) and haven't had a drink since. I went out last night to socialise at the pub and only had a pint of Coke so I think I passed the will power test! Want to stay sober now. It's so much better.

As a Muslim I've never drank alcohol in my life. All my drinking friends say 'it's amazing that I don't and that there's nothing good about it', but despite this they still drink and regret it. I've never understood why people drink. The negatives far outweigh the benefits (if any) at both an individual and societal level. Boggles my little mind ☺️

Yh me too as well. I drank couple of times but never drunk but it wasn’t good tbh and the taste was rubbish. I don’t even know why people still drink when it’s worthless and your money was wasteful. Completely overrated with partying imo. I’m a Muslim as well but just open minded guy but alcohol and smoking is a big no and if I want my wife favourite qualities then she has to not drink and smoke. Simple or not partying either at all.

I never drink anymore since moving back to England. When I lived in Marbella it was almost impossible not to drink. The parties, the clubs and the women were what tempted me, not the alcohol itself. If I avoided those places then I literally would have been sat on my own at home. Even a trip to Supersol or Lidl would result in women wearing next to nothing, saying that they are heading out tonight. I just couldn't stay away lol. Now I am older I wouldn't be as tempted (the women are not really interested in me anymore 😂).

The thing you said about drinking because you feel uncomfortable in that setting hits close to home. I realized myself that I drank so much in university because I feel uneasy in dancings and clubs.
