Love the way you teach! We have home Bible Study group once a week and you are our new teacher, nice to meet you! I put you on the TV through my internet connection and our group just hangs on to the beautiful, clear sound teaching you bring, what a refreshing blessing, thank you. Would love your numbers to grow because it is just sooo worth it! Bless you, from South Africa.

Yes, doing Romans overview next week and then into the full Romans study week after that. It is a foggy area for two Hebrew "Rooters" in our group so I am sure the Holy Spirit will use these two studies to bring clarity to them on the issue of THE LAW. My sister attends Calvery Chapel here in Cape Town so I am going to introduce them to you, a young and vibrant little group. I am Evangelical Reformed but same conservative, "Bible only" approach. Love and blessings to your congregation from Cape Town South Africa.

Watching this in 2023. So many people will be blessed by this series! My daughter is 7 months old. If she ever has a question about Romans when she grows up, I’m sending her this playlist!! Thanks Mike!!! Thankful to the Lord for your ministry and your faithfulness to teach the Word verse by verse carefully and thoughtfully. I am not learning this stuff at church and I’m grateful that I can be under a teacher like you. I wanted for so long to leave the church I was at to find a Mike Winger pastor but have recently come to the conclusion that I need to become a Mike Winger-Bible thinker myself! I don’t necessarily need a perfect teaching pastor but I do need to do my own studying and growing outside of Sunday and bible studies. Thanks for your teachings and your zeal for God. It is encouraging!!

Thank you for this teaching. I'm reading through the book of Romans right now. I wanted to share this with someone who would appreciate it. In 1981, at the age of 31, I accepted Jesus Christ as my savior in a Southern Baptist Church. It was a very dramatic, profound, and life changing experience of repentance and walking from darkness into light. A couple weeks after I was first saved our pastor read from Romans 8:38-39. "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Upon hearing this passage for the first time - I started bawling in the middle of the service with a couple hundred people in attendance. I was surrounded by these long-time church members who barely knew me, so it was embarrassing. I'm not the type of person who wants to be the center of attention (very introverted). Those verses touched me to my very core and they are still some of my favorites. 😭😭😭

I have been listening to an audio book of Romans and I find Paul hard to listen to sometimes, trying to understand what he's getting at or about to get at. Often it means listening all the way through a chapter to get the content, then going back and listening again to clarify what he actually means. So your summary Mike is a breath of fresh air. Tonight I went back in time (4years ago?) and found this overview of Romans by Pastor Winger. This goes so well with N.T. Wright’s overview of Romans. Romans is so rich and deep. This is so helpful as a review and overview. To understand Romans, it has helped me to always consider the entire book and who is the audience and when it was written, and always consider the OT references Paul uses (as Winger points out). Wow, nearly 107K views. So what’s wrong with 80’s shorts? Back to cleaning out my closet I guess.

I personally have an appetite for theology and study, but sometimes those more theological teacher types can be sooo smart that I think they have a hard time breaking it down at a level that everyone can understand...but you do this beautifully! I only wish you had an overview for every book of the bible! And then verse by verse teachings too!! 😆 Thank you and I pray that God continues to bless you and your ministry.

It was a good lesson of the book of Romans,a birds eye view of understanding who we are, humans, that have a sinful nature, and the struggle involved becoming children of God, and if we don't know what is going on as born again creature of God, we will despair and give up but once we do, we have hope in growing and developing Christ within us, and how it extended God's grace to give us power to become full blooded children of God through Christ dying for us, I loved the thought process through the teaching to the end.

Wow I do believe you are a man after my own heart!👐 Thank you so very much for applying Gods gift of teaching and bringing the Bible alive and understandable/relatable for all levels of maturity in Christ. I am for the first time leading a Study in my church, and I chose the Book of Romans. I received some concern that this book might not be appropriate for new or less mature believers, but I think not. And after watching this video, I now know NOT. I recall when I first came to Christ and had absolutely 0 knowledge of the scriptures, but my hunger to know was insatiable and that led me to seek out every study I could possibly partake in at my church or in small group home studies. I remember Romans being one of the 1st ones in a home study and I can remember that I couldn’t wait for the next meeting to come around. I was so deeply effected by this masterpiece of Paul’s and I just knew it was very special. I also would not say that it seemed too difficult for my level of understanding either, in fact I so believe in the Holy Spirit revealing all the truths of God and knew I was ready because I sought after truth and God desperately wanted to meet me there. Later I was introduced to BSF international and they just happened to be in Romans that year so I really was able to have guidance I needed. Well here I am 20 yrs later, and now sharing this beautiful, life changing book with my fellow believers and was asked if I would lead them!! I’m honestly honored and feel blessed beyond measure to take on this role in all humbleness ☺️ So I know God just led me to your channel and I will be showing your video to the group as an introduction before we get into our study books next week(using Irving L. Jensen inductive Bible study guide). You have a passion, insight and gifted ability from the Lord that is tangible. I have been told that from others as well and I’m so ecstatic to realize this as my spiritual gift. So from one heart for His living, breathing, word eternal to another, Thank you Thank you Thank you…….. …….and Be Blessed as you are a Blessing to others….🕊✝️🕊

The Book of Romans is Paul's condensed chronology of history given to the Romans who may not know it. Chapter 1 = pre flood / Tower of Babel Chapter 2-4 = Jewish history / The Law Chapter 5 - 7 = Jesus, Grace & Truth Chapters 8 onward, how to live the Christian life in faith. Then later there are some references to end times, the remnant of Israel and grafting them back in etc...

Hey there brother Mike. I’m a youth pastor at my church and recently I’ve stumbled upon what may seem to be contradicting verses. Paul states that Abraham was saved through faith, but James states that Abraham was justified by works and by faith. My church generally teaches that by faith ONLY is a man justified. I’ve come to my own conclusions but I think it would be great if you did a Bible study on James or at least go over those verses in James. Thank you! God bless.
@cannongilbert9744
@cannongilbert9744 4 жыл бұрын
Hey brother, sorry I’m no Mike Winger but I see it’s been a month since you asked this so I figured I’d give a response for you and anyone who sees this comment with the same question. Short answer: there is no contradiction; Paul and James do not have two different opinions on how one can be saved, but rather two different emphases. Paul emphasizes trusting in Jesus’s righteousness alone for salvation, James emphasizes the fact that true, saving faith is not just general belief but acceptance of Jesus as Lord and King of your life. It has been said that we are all natural-born legalists (our natural tendency is to believe that we have to work to earn our salvation). This is a very common view that is completely contrary to the gospel (grace through faith alone), so Paul wrote at great length emphasizing the role of faith and complete trust in Jesus’ righteousness for our salvation. Unfortunately, some people can take Paul’s teachings too far and say things like, “All you need is just a general belief that Jesus is savior, pray a little prayer, and then you’re good to go and can live however you want and still get into heaven.” This is sometimes called “Free Grace Theology.” This view is also contrary to the gospel, as true faith includes repentance and surrendering to Jesus. That’s why Paul himself refutes this stance in multiple places, the first one that comes to my mind is Romans 6, there’s also 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, and more. James wrote his epistle largely to refute free grace theology, but even in it he does mention the salvific role of faith apart from works. Check out James 2:17-19: "...Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have works.” Show me your faith apart from works, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.” In other words, James points out that just general belief and acceptance of the facts of the gospel is not enough. Even the demons know all the essential truths about the gospel. Pointing that out is a major focus for this epistle, but James wants to make sure that nobody takes his statements too far, and that’s why he says verse 18: “But someone will say...by what I do.” Somebody may hear the gospel, and think, “That’s foolishness, I am not going to entrust my eternity on faith, I have to earn it! You trust in faith alone? Well, I have good works so I’ll trust in my own deeds!” To that, James reply is essentially, “No! Show me your faith apart from works (put your faith in Jesus, not your good deeds), and as for me, I will prove that my faith is genuine by my works.” We are saved by faith, and good works follow. Paul’s frequent emphasis was on the fact that our good works can’t save us, and it is only by God’s grace through our faith in his righteous sacrifice. James frequent emphasis was on the fact that true faith will manifest in the form of a transformed life that bows to Jesus as Lord.

@@bornagain9192 then you need to look a little harder. There are plenty of quotes on how they felt. Calvin himself spewed the vilest of things against his opponents. The systems they were willingly apart of, burned people alive, and Calvin turned his own family in and supported their stoning for adultry. You can hero worship if you want, but I just encourage you to look into it objectively. Maybe you arent finding it cause you dont want to? Idk. But it's not hard to find with the ease of access we have to information Today. I hope you educate yourself on the systems they were apart of and the horrible things that went on in the name of Christ by both the reformers and RCC. Really no different in spirit. Look up balthazar hubmyer. He was an annabaptist, he spoke up and said we should not be like Rome. He said we should not win over people with fire and sword, but love, patience, and prayer. They killed him. And drowned his wife. Every one of those men had nothing to say about the behavior against it. So, I'd encourage you to just look into it. I could care less if you believe me. The info is there for anyone who cares to objectively look into how the reformers and puritans treated people. Not much different then the RCC at the time of agustine as well, whom also was not against the behavior.

Hi Mike, would it be possible to switch for all your movies, including the bit older ones the auto caption on? If not on yet? Makes it easier to follow especially for some when English might be their second or third language

Hello Mike, thank you for your teachings. I know you're a busy man but have you ever considered doing a verse be verse teaching on James? I struggle with the sin of legalism and scrupulous/OCD. And I have times when I can understand God's grace and salvation in Christ but when my mind is chaotic the Book of James confuses me and it will help to have a sound teaching to go to when I'm struggling. Thanks for all your service to the Lord.

hi, jesus saves us from sin yet we still sin. so how to explain? is the christian free from sin??? yes and no. does jesus excuse sin? i dont think so, yet he understands us when we sin. OCD is not sin, i think, its silly to think it is like saying being in a wheel chair is sin. yes it leads to sin as anything but you are in same boat, i believe, as many, if not all. i could descibe my own faith diminishing struggles, a very long list, but faith says screw u!! My list would out do urs. Put me to the test. but what matters most is faith. Literally are you saving u or did you reach out for help because u knew u were screwed. do u still kno u are screwed well then u are blessed. if u think u are well then u loose life but if u know u are unwell then u gain life. reading truth and being diserning with the constant lies impressed upon us all helps. try to trust even though it makes no sense. read then believe. ask for less confusion and for wisdom. he who asks for wisdom will reicieve.

Pstr. Mike, I came across your channel last other week and since then I regularly visit it. I am so blessed with you, you know. But am confused now. You said Paul hasn't been in Rome. But wasn't it he wrote his 4 prison epistles which are Philippians, Ephesians, Colossians and Philemon while he was imprisoned therein? Please enlighten me about this matter. I hope to receive your reply the soonest time. We have our regular Bible study at home and I want to share your teachings. Also I am about to start my discipleship to some women in the neighborhood. Thank you very much! GOD bless you more wisdom and use you continually in spreading HIS WORD! 🙏

I got to thinking am I that divisive person? I do start arguments. I never fit in at church. I've been told some awful things as to why. Then again I realized the majority of these churches are ran by women behind the scenes. Usually fostering highly neurotic and effeminate practices. Regardless here I am. Thank you for this pastor we needed it.. At least I did.

Even though Paul hadn't been to the Roman Church, he was still responding to a situation. Claudius had removed the Jews from Rome in 49 AD. The Jews had now returned in 54 AD after Claudius' death, to a predominantly Gentile Church. The tension between them was problematic. He attempts to unify them.

Mike what is the Catholic definition of ex-communication ad how is it different from the biblical definition? Thanks Kevin
@MikeWinger
@MikeWinger 7 жыл бұрын
I think that the main difference is in regards to indulgences, penance, confession, the treasury of merit, and mass. When a Catholic is excommunicated they are in constant sin which is not being dealt with (according to Catholic theology) through the channels of the Church. As I understand it, if I were a Catholic who was excommunicated I am not only being told that I have a sin which the Church is not helping me with I am also being separated from the means of grace which the Church provides. Each time I miss mass it is only adding guilt to myself, which is thought by many to be a mortal sin, and I am missing out on any chance to be absolved of the sins which I have committed since my last confession. I am basically stuck adding sin without an avenue to remove it because, in Catholicism, grace flows through the Church and I am separated from her. What I see as the biblical definition is much different and is merely a social separation to protect the local church from joining in the sin of the person and to allow for that person to feel the weight of the matter and hopefully repent.
@kevinwynn6582
@kevinwynn6582 7 жыл бұрын
Yes according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church someone who has been excommunicated is barred from receiving the sacraments which are the "normal means of grace" established by Christ for his Church. They are also barred from holding any office or ministry in the Church. Excommunication is meant to convince the person of their guilt so that they will hopefully seek reconciliation with the Church. Given Paul's statements in 1 Corinthians 5:5 that sounds pretty Biblical to me. The difference you are perceiving in the Catholic teaching and most Protestant churches teaching on excommunication is that the Protestant churches lack the authority to actually excommunicate anyone. If I as a Protestant were excommunicated from your church I could just start attending the church down the road that didn't have a problem with my particular beliefs. You mentioned Calvinism in this video most Protestants would disagree with Calvin's theology but a lot of them agree with him. Who's right? Who has the authority at the Baptist church to tell the Presbyterians that they are teaching false doctrine?

+kevin wynn How do parishes keep excommunicated people from attending mass if they relocate to a new parish and just start attending?
@kevinwynn6582
@kevinwynn6582 7 жыл бұрын
Of course a person could do that and it might take a while for the priest to catch on but they would be found out. Consider Paul's warning to the Corinthians in the same letter. (1 Corinthians 11:27-30) The Eucharist isn't just a symbol like it is in a protestant church. The Lord is the one who will judge them.
@MikeWinger
@MikeWinger 7 жыл бұрын
+kevin wynn please correct me if I am wrong but outside of divine judgment or someone "figuring it out" neither of us has a particular protection from someone just pretending they were not excommunicated. In that sense I think we are on equal ground and it is wrong to criticize churches for not being able to guard against liars. The church just isn't made with active liars in mind. But, many churches are aware of this problem and have tried to help by networking. If my church were aware of an excommunicated member (a rare thing) attending another church we would call that fellowship and let them know (and we have done this before).
