Also, I don't know if this is a "glitch" or an "easter egg", but in the original Spyro the Dragon (at least on the NTSC greatest hits version), if you wait around in the level (about 10-15 minutes), the music track will end, and depending on the level, an alternate theme will play, including two tracks that didn't get their own level!

In Spyro 3, I used the swim anywhere glitch in Bamboo Terrace to get around the area. You can use it to get to Bentley's sub-level even if you haven't unlocked him yet by going over the back of the map and you'd be able to enter the portal from behind. The only difference is that the glitch there doesn't require a fairy. All you need to do is dive at just the right distance before the outer edge of the waterfall near the end of the level. Cool to see this!

Mike, in world one in Spyro 2, there is a water level. When I was probably 7 years old or younger, I discovered a glitch in that level on the top of the level. On top of the level there is a sea city where you can complete extra missions, but what I did was something different. This is where the glitch starts. I tried to swim out of the area, but the invisibul wall pushed me away. I noticed how I got a little futher by swimming faster towards the invisebul wall, so what I did was that I started to swim around the area while pushing myself forwards to the wall. I was swimming around in circles around the sea city but I noticed I got a bit futher and futher. In the end I actually got out of the area and I noticed that I was out of the level. I was swimming outside the level which was a huge discovery for me as a kid. I remember how suprised I was when I actually swimmed so far away from the level that the game crashed and on top of that, I heard an audio clip begin played for some reason about some people talking about spyro. I am not sure but I also think those people spoke the same language as I did (which is not english) which creeped me a lil as a kid. I was very very confused.

As a game programmer i can explain why Spyro can't be hurt with the Invincibility Glitch I can imagine that Spyro's health is controlled by values The Values would be 3,2,1 If the value reaches 0, his health function is disabled and will be resseted back to normal once Spyro respawns after death, but since you triggered a cutscene that requires spyro to be in it, the death mechanism has stopped and spyro can't be hurt because his health value cannot be under 0, and you need more health in able to be hurt, so no matter what you try *besides falling out of bounds* you cannot die what so ever
@jetstreamjackie34378 жыл бұрын
That duplicate world you're showing in Spyro 2 is what's known as a Parallel Universe and is a glitch present in many games, such as SM64, Pokémon Generation 4, and Paper Mario. While I don't have much experience w/ this particular PU, I'm guessing that it works in much the same way. Your position is tracked using x, y, and z coordinates, the value of which is stored in the game engine. You can overflow this value by traveling too far in one of the three directions, causing graphics to recycle. Note that collision is not repeated, for some reason. This is a very basic explanation of this particular PU glitch, but I hope it helps. If you happen to know more about this one than I do, please feel free to correct me.
@deloric77497 жыл бұрын
Huh, interesting. This was pretty much my exact thoughts on what could have happened, more or less, and I'd never heard of this "Parallel Universe" glitch. I had no idea we'd named this type of glitch yet. Good to know that gamers know enough about coding to try to figure this one out!
@MythicSuns6 жыл бұрын
me being clueless I'm a little lost, am I right in thinking that Spyro relies on the warp engine effect in that everything is being pulled around him to give the illusion that he's moving forward?
@bhull2425 жыл бұрын
In short, the reason for parallel universes like this has to do with some calculations be done with floating-point numbers (real numbers stored in scientific notation), while others are done using integers. This is because floating-point numbers can allow for non-integer values while integer math is faster and simpler. Floating-point numbers can be really small or really big, and if it gets too big, it gets stuck at positive or negative infinity. Integers have a much more limited range, and if they get too big, they’ll “overflow” from the maximum allowed value to the minimum allowed value. (The opposite happens if they try to go below the minimum allowed value, called “integer underflow”.) So what happens is that, for some calculations, floating-point values get converted to integers, calculations and comparisons are done using those integers, and then the results are either used directly (for comparisons) or are cast back into floating-point numbers. In other cases, you compare a floating-point number to an integer. Because a floating-point number can get much larger than can be stored as an integer, we often end up with integers over- or underflowing during the math, which means that a lot of different values get converted to the same integer. As a result, you get a lot of repeats. Now, I can’t say for sure, but I believe that how SM64 PUs work differs from how Spyro PUs work. SM64 PUs have collision but the camera doesn’t work properly and the PUs are invisible. Spyro PUs look the same outside of animations but lack collision.

@@Lycanrockin Same, my first thought was that it was probably used in cutscenes to make sure they can control all objects that appear in them
@BRUTALSHANZ19889 жыл бұрын
I firmly believe that the duplicate map is designed for the Cinematic Cutscenes and the Portals are there as loading zones for the animations within the cutscenes of Spyro himself and many others to be fully loaded into the real map data soon shortly after the main map data gets loaded. Like when you head through a Portal you would see that animation with the gems being counted etc.Well that so happens to be in a empty partition of space high on up from where the main level begins.
@mbfhk988 жыл бұрын
Maybe they wanted to avoid having to hide all the extra stuff that is normally in the world like characters and gems during the cutscenes so they just used a plain copy of the map instead.
@DraciaNightcat8 жыл бұрын
I used to think that too, but did a bit of research online and it seems to be a coordinate glitch. When you swim off the side or high up, the coordinates wrap around/overflow/underflow/something-or-other and it causes the level to reload but without collision or objects. I don't remember the specfics, but what I got from it was it's not an area used for cutscenes so much as a weird quirk of flying far off the normal coordinates.

Cat Tobin Or parallel universes. In Spyro.
@DELTARYZ7 жыл бұрын
it's literally an almost identical bug to the parallel universe glitch in Super Mario 64, the key difference here being that they have no collision (SM64 PUs do). Essentially the coordinates variable just overflows and starts drawing the map again.

the reason there is a duplicate world is because when the sprite loads, it has to have somewhere to load from, so it puts in a random part of the world boundary. in now a days games there are able to transfer sprites right from memory but because of hardware limitations ate the time, this was not possible.

from what I've seen in Spyro 3 I've deduced that Insomniac basically decided to reward glitchers with extra lives by placing them in areas where there used to be a portal; I'm basing this on the glitch cave in firework factory and the distant island in midnight mountain, both of which contain an extra life (4 in the case of the island in midnight mountain)

I remember pulling off a glitch in Spyro 2 that extends your life counter to beyond 99, much like the Crash video you did. I got it by obtaining skillpoints that don't spawn butterflies (perfect bosses, speedway time trials). Getting a regular life drops your counter back to 99 however. Doesn't even the extra life sound that way. I'm not sure if I remember it correctly since it's been years since I had the patience to grind that many lives, but I know I've gotten beyond 99 before.

13:03 If you haven't freed Sheila the Kangaroo yet, an arch will appear below where the portal to Sheila's Alp would be. If you swim through this, you can enter her level without paying Moneybags, and beating her level will free her. You can free Sheila, Sgt. Byrd, and Bentley by doing this; there are tutorials for Skipping Moneybags that'll show you how. Spyro 3 handled portals that were supposed to be temporarily inaccessible by putting them below their destinations and lifting them up, not by conjuring them out of nowhere. It's the same for cutscene assets, like the whale's stomach and the cage from the cutscenes where Hunter gets trapped, all of which can be seen out of bounds at 14:54. It's awesome to see how everything is *right there* if you know where to look.

I used to play the Demo a bit, but I never actually had the Spyro games, nor have I really played them. I was always a Crash Bandicoot person myself. But yet, every time I hear or see Spyro(Specifically the PSX games), nostalgia slaps me in the face. Also, the duplicate world in the air in Spyro 2. I don't think anything "causes it to happen", it just..happens. The makers of the game put the world up there. There's probably a reason it's there. Even modern games do things like that. A lot of time there's entire duplicate levels, hallways, worlds, etc somewhere outside the main game area. They tend to be used for cutscenes, or if there's a portal type thing in the game that you see the world through, it'll show that duplicate world instead of the real one so it doesn't have to re-render the solid objects and npcs/animations/etc. There's also other reasons for stuff like that, but that's the main ones I've seen. Think of it like the Ghost Town in Grand Theft Auto 3. A little section of city that has no solid objects, and is in an area you were never meant to get to. It was used for the intro cutscene so the cutscene didn't have to render all the solid objects, NPCs, and traffic that would normally be there in the main game area. Also, personally, I'm fine with long episodes. But if you don't want to make longer episodes, I'd at least like to see some of these games, like Spyro and Crash Bandicoot revisited in a Part 2. Especially if there's more glitches to find. I mean..this video was fun, but a majority of time was spent just showing different ways to swim on land, or to walk underwater, or whatever. Interesting and all, but I would have liked to see some of the other hidden rooms and things. I know at least one of the Spyro games has a hidden room you can't normally get to.
@MikeyTaylorGaming9 жыл бұрын
TXF that is kinda weird! But cool nonetheless :Pokemon Yeah I believe it is cutscenes where and the final credit roll take place from what I understand after the making of the video :) The format has all changed recently, one game per video to fit more glitches in, but Spyro didn't have too many more as far as I was aware, they're the biggest I could seem to find if I remember rightly! Next episode is out tonight and is a huge 28 minutes long, great glitches and much better editing and scripting than this :) hope you can catch it! Mikey

3:22 the same glitch of dry cannon apears in stone Hill, but Is more complicate to realise (is with the dragon of the tower of the level) you have to roll with Spyro to a certain part of the tower where the dragon is (but only works if you release it the first time (I mean, when you start playing from the begin), if you already relised it and you want to try, it won't gonna happen again) it only works when the dragon is trapped, not after relise it

There's another way to swim in air in Spyro 3. There's a place in the panda level with a waterfall where, while paddling on the surface of the water, you can dive into the edge of the waterfall and you'll be swimming in the air.

It’s not a glitch, but I always get to the top of that ladder in Glimmer using the superfly portal at the end of the level. If you go through it and charge all the way back to the cave, you have JUST enough time to fly up there before the powerup times out!
@MiguelRPD8 жыл бұрын

@KravenErgeist10 жыл бұрын
The duplicate worlds in Spyro 2 are probably there deliberately to be used for the ending credits, where they fly through the worlds. Since they're rendered a little differently, as you said, it was probably easier for the developers to do it this way than to program the actual home world map to have a conditional state with no moving parts. There's probably a duplicate world for every map that gets a fly-through during the ending credits (and likely for the other two games as well). There's probably a similar explanation for the portals above the home world as well. I'll bet they're there so that when Spyro is flying "between" portals in-game, they have a generic background to use during the loading screens.
@MikeyTaylorGaming10 жыл бұрын
I had considered that they could be used in cutscenes as that would make a lot of sense actually, there IS in fact a duplicate for all stages I think, there are many levels you can do the Swim in the air glitch on and you can find them all about 5-10 minutes of upwards swimming. If you look right at the end of the Spyro 3 glitches in this video ( 14:50 ), the room I'm examining out of bounds is actually a room where hunter is held as a prisoner during a cutscene too, a little to the left/ behind of that is the 'Inside the whale' area too, which you can swim into but then can't escape! Still not a clue about the portals though, I'd read it's just an odd programming that causes them to be there, but your explanation sounds good too :P They all have the correct backgrounds in relation to the portals in that world too which is interesting!
@Abbendymion9 жыл бұрын
Sooner or later you come up with the 'fly in the air' glitch, specially at Aquaria Towers or Dino Mines. Though it's frustrating you can't flame anything =P. Also, as Jags said, duplicate instances of textures are present in levels to make it easier for the engine to load them in place. Another notorious example of this technique in early games was MS Fury3, a shooting PC game. Though this duplicated textures are frequently applied without 'surface' or 'solid' object, and located so far away in the world so you can't reach them or see them. (Like when you make out-of-canvas draw in Power Point or Illustrator or similar for 'palette' purposes.

As for the swim in air glitch leading to another world, what I would say probably happened is that you've most likely exited the original area with all of the collision, and the game is probably trying to figure out what to render. My guess is that it may be accessing the memory for the objects underneath without the code for the collisions intact. I'm not sure what the code looks like, so I can't say for sure, but it's my best guess. If that is the case, it's pretty impressive that the game doesn't simply crash when you go so far out of bounds. Also, a note about proxying - proxies exist in all the games, not just Spyro 3. In fact, speedruners tend to use a pretty well-known proxy in Hurricos, to avoid the first jumping puzzle. I don't think there's more that are useful enough for Spyro 1 speedruns, but there are a bunch in 2 and 3

It's possible to use the Spartan helmet proxy jump in Midnight Mountain to fling high in the air, and from the height you can glide to the secret platform with 3 butterfly jars that was supposed to hold the Super Bonus Round portal. It's really hard to pull off, and I couldn't do it last time I tried (about a week ago) but I definitely did this in almost every playthrough as a kid. If you get the helmet to shove you backwards, angle left into the wall. If you hit the right spot, Spyro will be be forced to follow the upward angle of the wall. Last week I was able to get this to happen only once, and I messed it up by holding Square too long and just charged back down (into the abyss). I'm surprised this isn't more well known, I'm pretty sure I got this from the internet, but while I can find references to the proxy jump, I can't find anything saying anybody else has ever used it to gain height, only to zoom horizontally across the map.

There is also a glitch that I found where, in that seahorse level, if you go to that circular area where you find hunter and the seahorse king, if you swim in circles around it at the VERY edge, having Spyro swim diagonally against the invisible wall, he will slowly go further into the wall and eventually go into an ‘out of bounds’ area. Since my siblings and I were little when I found this out, we called it “glitch world.” XD
@Lugmillord8 жыл бұрын
11:30 haha, so you can reach Parallel Universes like in Super Mario 64 but the mechanics seem to be inversed. Looks like the level coordinates overflow but the collision detection doesn't. In Sm64 it's the other way around. As for the cave at the end: I don't think it was removed but rather forgotten.
@MikeyTaylorGaming8 жыл бұрын
+Lugmillord I know of PU's in Mario 64 :) but I'll never be covering them... Maybe there's collision detection on the QPU? that's how it works on SM64 I believe, right? :)
@Lugmillord8 жыл бұрын
MikeyTaylorGaming In SM64 the values for collision detection overflows at some point due to a small datatype. But the position uses a larger datatype which doesn't overflow so the level model doesn't repeat. Here in Spyro it looks kinda inversed but that's just a guess. So you may find another copy if you keep going upwards.

I found another glitch that you should've mentioned. If you rapidly press the camera and charge buttons(all at the same time), you can have the camera focus 100% on spyro during any boss fight in the second game. It was natural to have the camera to be 100% be focused on spyro during the first game at any point. They removed the glitch in the third game though

you missed one in spyro 2. in the stage Aquaria Towers, once you refill all the water in the stage and can swim to the area above the main area, where you can play the manta ring game with hunter, theres a way to get out of bounds. swim to the edge of the area where the invisible wall is. charge against the floor so spyros head is straight down, but press towards the invisible wall. you will slowly slide through the barrier and end up outside the level. if you swim too far, the game will freeze. but this glitch can be used to swim anywhere in the level and even rescue a baby seahorse without opening its tower correctly
@alinorafoster8 жыл бұрын
I discovered this as a kid. I use it every time I play to skip that annoying king seahorse mission. If you swim below the map you can find several surfaces of water at varying heights. If you hit one, it will act as if you're swimming on the surface. If I remember right, you can't dive and it's impossible to get back up. So, the only thing you can do from there is to jump off the edge of the water and die.
@MikeyTaylorGaming8 жыл бұрын
+shadowsa2b Yeah actually I've seen this in a Speedrun at AGDQ! Didn't know about it at the time, the videos weren't of high standard back then of course XD Anyways, yeah, the seahorse that you rescue is the last one too, so you don't have to bother rescuing the others as the game assumes you've already rescued them to get to that point right? I'll probably re-do the crash and Spyro videos in future anyways :)

+Orblitzer Ahaaaaa! See many people have commented saying cutscenes, but you could be right there.
