My husband's 1st year resident and his hospital require him to take his Step 3 during the 1st year! He's so busy already- intern life- and now needs to prep for the exam. And we have 2 little ones at home which doesn't really help with studying much lol

My son's doctor is actually transferring into research. He is an Otolaryngologist at Seattle Children's. Dr. Bly. We got a call to change my son's post op appointment because he is leaving.

Speaking as someone who's been through the process.... 1. Of course it depends on what your career goals are, but it's been sneaky how medical programs squeeze extra years of cheap labor out of trainees. I went straight through after college without a fifth year of med school, PhD, or extra research years, and by the time I was done with fellowship, I was 31! So many people get pressured to spend extra time during training because they think it's necessary for their careers, and they end up not getting their first attending job until they're in their mid 30s. Surgery USED to be a 5 year residency, haha. 2. There are often excess meetings in medicine, which are especially frustrating as a doc because your time is so valuable and in short supply compared to others. However, Zoom has made the meeting stretch into days and times that you otherwise wouldn't have been able to do in-person meetings and you have fewer reasons to not be able to join based on location, etc. It's an art to limit those when possible. 3. I knew that it wouldn't be sustainable or healthy for me to consider surgery because I was tired of getting up at 4:30-5 AM in med school! 4. Thankfully they no longer make us to annual fit testing. As long as I don't gain/lose too much weight, I'm comfortable assuming that the same size mask that's fit me for >10 years will still fit 😀
