I’ve definitely seen influencers talk about sunscreen and anti-aging but I find it hard to believe most people use it solely for that purpose. It’s like “it keeps my skin safe and if, in doing that, there are also anti aging benefits, great!” Plus I’d imagine most people who use sunscreen on their kids are doing it purely for safety purposes not for vanity.

Exactly lol and I relate, as someone clearly neurodivergent but what kind idk. Obsession has been my brand in life. Hyperfixation on everything, and especially catastrophising. My OCD lends itself to that. If I don't do this thing, and do it perfectly, something TERRIBLE will happen. But "Christianese" likes to use the word idol because it says anything we think about *more* than God is an idol. The words obsession, addiction, disease, neurodivergence, hyperfixation etc... All in the lexicon of psychology... Are 'not Christian enough.' But a Golden Calf is!

It's very clear their problem is with patriarchy and consumerism and not vanity. Why is it always a problem with women wanting to look good a feel good about themselves. Back when Milena was starting KZbin she wore thick lashes and whatnot because IT WAS THE TREND. Now... it's the trendy new think to be minimal and people are realizing less is more with skincare too. She was influenced by the media and noticed how difficult the upkeep was of that life style and said God told me and I know better so I'm telling you. Seems weird to me

I have dermatillomania and I habitually and compulsively pick at my skin, sometimes for hours if I'm not snapped out of it. It's the reason I still struggle with acne and have scarring on my face, as I can't leave my skin alone. One of the things that keeps me from picking is putting on foundation, even if it's on a weekend and I'm not going anywhere. Serums and moisturizers help to heal my skin from the damage I've caused. You should wear whatever you like and put on your skin whatever you feel comfortable, full stop. I also LIKE to wear a lot of makeup ☺. But I'd be curious to hear Milena and her sister's thoughts on something like a mental health disorder like that, where sometimes it's not "vanity", it's necessity.

Wants wisdom from older women…then goes on to reduce the said women to their appearance. The fact that she had to “work through” things in order to find a 70 year old person beautiful tells me everything about her priorities Edit: AND that she’s not listening to anything older people are saying bc she’s only thinking “wow look how their face lines move when they talk”

Right? Like, the argument could be equally made that sunscreen usage is part and parcel of looking after the "temple of god", ie. the human body that is in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit. I don't believe this nonsense anymore, but you can literally make any verse mean what you want it to mean in the moment.

This comes as absolutely no disrespect for Christians, because I know you are one, but some of what she's talking about and attributing to the lord just feels like the natural progression of her life. She said her nails were annoying for her new hobbies so it seems logical she would subconsciously want them off. The confidence growth she mentioned from 20 to 30 is also very normal. I understand that god is an active force in the minds and hearts of those who believe in him but like you can also just grow and change as a person which this sounds like to me.

You said it so well. I’m about to turn 33 and have gone through so many of the ‘changes’ she mentioned. I wore heavy makeup in my 20’s because I had a lot more free time and energy. I rarely wear makeup now (mostly bc of energy). The way I dressed has changed, the shoes I wear, the things I spend my money on, and yes even my nails - I used to get long acrylics, now they are bare and natural. I’m an atheist, so it has nothing to do with god, it’s just the way my body, time, and interests have slowly changed.

On the discussion about the importance of feeling worthy whether we make changes to our physical appearance or not (around 20 min): I do feel that your points are very thoughtful, but I would strongly caveat them as mostly applying to people when their appearance is generally accepted and valued by society. When you have traits that aren't accepted or treated with respect, I think it's a really tall ask for you to feel worthy as you are. So just wanted to add that caveat that although we all deserve to feel worthy and ideally would feel worthy, it is painfully understandable why people might struggle a lot to feel that way, and I think we need to be supportive of people coping with current societal standards as best they can, while we try to overturn them. ❤️ Of course, I think we all agree that there are additional caveats around changing your body to better reflect yourself, but I think the underlying conversation here was really about the influence societal beauty standards have on us.

About what you said about not making changes out of self hatred. I worked for a plastic surgeon. I’ve also had cosmetic surgery. What really impressed me was how my doctor and the doctor I worked for, really put an emphasis on what is realistic to expect. Basically look; you’re not going to look perfect, no one will, no one can, if you want to improve something that can be done; you need to have a realistic expectation, you are not going to wake up and every part of your life is perfect now. You are improving one thing, everything else is still going to be the same… I know not al doctors do this, but thankful the ones I’ve interacted with have. I also think they do it because they want happy clients, someone hating how they look because of surgery results is not going to be a good recommendation… people only need to see one unhappy client to decide to never see that doctor. Setting clients up for realistic expectations is important for the doctors success long term, and the patients happiness post surgery. Also … things take time to settle! Every girl I know who has a breast reduction panics, hates it, thinks they made a huge mistake, think their breasts are too hard and perky, but having had one myself I remember those feelings and I remember how after a year things really did settle and look natural. Nothing is instant.

My problem with the whole "God knitted me together perfectly in my mother's womb," saying is that a lot of us suffer from genetic disorders, genetic diseases, chronic illness, congenital anomalies, etc. A lot of us suffer on a daily basis and to say God made it that way, doesn't sit right with me. I also don't believe in perfection. That's not a real thing. It's not attainable. It's not something to strive for. Everything has flaws. It's inherently part of existence.

Their comment about the lack of wise women in church may be true to their experience, but is definitely not true overall. I’ve been blessed by so many older Christian women who have lived through such different experiences. It’s sad that they haven’t had that in their lives, but it’s unfair for them to say that those women are rare. Maybe the churches they attend attract a younger demographic.

I cannot imagine the stress of thinking that everything I do, that I consider to be "self-care", is actually vanity. A skin care routine isn't necessarily for vanity. (Your skin is your largest organ, and it's not vain to care for it.) Same with many other activities, eg; shaving, makeup, nails, exercising, etc. I think it can be a scary, slippery slope from doing things that make you feel good, to completely neglecting yourself out of fear that doing anything for yourself, including self-care and hobbies could be considered selfish and vain.

My issue with "Christianese" (as Drew GMS says lol I love it) is the need to attribute *every single thing* to God, even if it's something you can attribute just to you. Halfway through and all I've heard so far is the belief she was struggling with beauty standards and the insecurity surrounding it to be perfect / up to standard / influencer beautiful. And instead she developed a sizeable amount of self confidence and is learning to love the body she's in, with her face, and invest time in things that make her happy rather than increase performative pressure. I'm Christian myself, so yes I do turn to God with all of those things in prayer. I pray for self confidence, self love, better body image, contentment in my own skin with my own face etc. But I still do attribute so much of that to my own self work going to therapy and trying to shed toxic societal mindsets I've soaked up. Trying to define myself by the girl in the mirror rather than what a tabloid says I should. I find it immensely saddening with a lot of the evangelical movement seeing oneself as a fully blank canvas. Everything is God. Every work is God. Every good thing is God, every bad thing is Satan, and every act of self growth is God. Is there no agent to say hey, I'm a highly intelligent person who has done a lot of work too? Or is it "vain" to recognise one's own accomplishments and feel proud you've put in some hard legwork?

They didnt say thay but the way they enphasis purity gave me that vibe

33:53 not diagnosing her at all, but as someone with adhd it sounds like she’s describing pretty typical adhd traits but making it about morality. This is a message that can be very damaging to neurodiverse people. My guess is she heard this because it’s very common in conservative Christian spaces

Nice thought. For someone having for example like you said adhd, or anxiety (which I have) or other diagnosis within the spectrum or mental health. I think if you haven't figured out yet how your illness works, sometimes you indeed tend to see thoughts and/or actions as something right and truthfull, but actually it's your illness acting/speaking up. . And you tend to link it to another thing. Cause you haven't quite figured out yet it's possibly linked to your illness. I recognize that a lot within myself

@@lrzbhnsn and these spaces often discourage people from getting mental health help. Instead it teaches to spiritually bypass and try harder. The further removed I am from the spaces the more nefarious it seems. I think there’s a lot of well meaning people heaping shame on the neurodivergent.

Win for the week: Spending more intentional time with my kiddos doing crafts! I'm also still pregnant with my rainbow baby which I'm always grateful for everyday :) P.S. I think I totally understand what Milena was talking about when she said sunscreen can be vain for some people. It really depends on the girls you hang out with but I never hear girls being concerned about skin cancer lol; they're usually only obsessing over how the sun will effect their facial countenance over time. Nothing wrong with that but it can honestly get out of hand sometimes haha

Her saying that sunscreen is vanity because it's for anti-aging purposes is one of the reasons I left the skincare social media/KZbin community. I enjoy skincare, I like learning about the science behind it and experimenting, but there is an extremely toxic and harmful obsession with "anti-aging" in that community. (I put anti-aging in quotes because it's really not a thing. We all age, regardless of how many products we put on our faces). I grew up in the desert and sunscreen was necessary so your skin doesn't get burned, peeling, painful, permanently damaged, or develop cancer.

In some ways, perhaps from a different perspective, it sounds like being in bondage from thinking about vanity- even in trying not to be. It sounds sad and especially with so many other things to consider idk. Everyone’s faith journey is different so it could just sound that way to me but I also get what she’s saying to an extent. It’s just also the obsession in not being vain.

It’s so frustrating to see these Christian influencers do this thing. This thing where they wane on and off about whether they’re speaking for their own health, just to get their own personal convictions from the lord off their chests and to wax poetic about how, when, & why they make the life decisions and choices they do. Or, if they are actually acting in a guidance, modeling, and/or pastoral role and preaching for their audience to change their own ways and follow the lead. It’s actually so transparent that these influencers are really doing the latter. And my hope would be for them to just freakin’ own it! Say from the top that that’s what you’re doing and that’s what your goal is. Literally, to influence. There’s less wrong in being honest about it than there is for being contradictory and hypocritical in your videos. I’m talking to Milena, who committed this chief offense by the book in the video; GirlDefined, B.Dawn, and Paul & Morgan are all also really noteworthy perpetrators of this offense, repeatedly. It’s so aggravating. It’s deceptive, confusing for the most earnest of the followers, and unnecessary. It chips at the influencer’s credibility right out of the gate when I hear or see this dance of motives happening. I don’t know if the influencer transgressors are truly oblivious and ignorant of this tendency of theirs; or if they are doing it on purpose.

Ugh the idea that you would be sad because your child wanted to change something about themselves…. This is why these people are so dangerous to the trans community. They put more importance on what their god believes, and not on what the living breathing human in front of them believes. I would be heart broken if my child felt they could not be the version of themselves they want to be, because I would be disappointed. I was born with a congentical issue, small things like Botox, veneers, etc all helped me to look more “normal” and you can say you should love yourself the way you are …. Ok but even if I love myself the way I am, I WILL be treated differently, I WILL be stared at, I WILL be up against peoples biases about people who look like I do. I think god wants us to be happy, if we are not harming others then I think he’s probably got bigger fish to fry. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I feel like this is reaching, like I get it if this is a certain issue for some people, but it’s not the general idea of how people view beauty, skin care etc. I have a very strong feeling that they had some kind of maternal figure in their lives when they were young, who was obsessed with looks and aging And since they’re getting older, maybe their style is just changing, but it’s been instilled in them to reject aging? I’m making this up also, there’s nothing I’ve seen to totally confirm this, it’s just a feeling. Another thing is, why do we need to pick ourse and other women apart in this way? We also enjoy having nice bodies so we work out and will choose clothes with out favorite colors and glitters etc. Does that all need to stop too? I’m tired, lol 💤
