Before I went into the Army, I was a CG Auxiliarist & I volunteered to do the radio watch standing at the CG station near my house every weekend and holiday. The Coasties I relieved were always glad to see me, cause they got off from doing it & could do whatever they wanted for the time they were scheduled to do the watch. You'll appreciate the CG Auxiliary!

When I went to basic training in 1977 it was 12 weeks training 1 week forming for a total of 13 weeks. We walked to the range and fired real M16's and 45's at real targets. Bunks were not as nice as the bunks they have today.

Military Journeymen they called it PEP (Positive Enforcement Platoon) when I was in. Same shit. They’d march around with red belts with a nazi salute (no kidding) and say “PEP! PEP! PEP!” 😆 good times. I’m glad I flew below the radar and never got lumped in with them. Now I feel old!

If you're lucky you get to get stationed there? I went right across Munro Ave. to the Vig. The detailer then did me a solid and had me walk across the parking lot to Sta. Cape May. 5 years, never left CM.

I was in the RK program where I went to Cape May between my junior and senior year of high school. When I started my senior year I realized how immature the students were after boot experience! Afterwards one weekend a month followed by "A" school, one month of OJT at an MSO then back to being a weekend warrior. Watching this video it looks much worse then when I went there. No verbal harassment in the mess hall, no overhead swinging line up and over the head, and the only time we used the rifle is when we were marching. M-16 and pistol at the range. Our boot camp was 9-weeks. One week for driving various vehicles. Went to both chapel services to stay away from the barracks! Was company yeoman and had my own office! I was in Echo 101? Back in the day those who couldn't swim went to remedial swim classes after dinner. Obviously no computers. The week after me was the first all-female company with a female company commander (Golf company). In the RK program/reserves I requested guaranteed A school. I think it might be the same now.

July 1968 "Sir, yes Sir" constantly being screamed at: talk back & you find yourself carrying a bucket round your neck, half filled with cement all day, whenever you passed or faced with boot camp officer you took it off, did push ups "Sir 1 sir, sir 2 sir, & continue you till they told you stop: bucket back on, keep jogging. You no wash your clothes right= a week washing cloths all day. Talking back got you in disciplinary quarters, wearing double clothing in all day & barracks of painted windows closed with 85> 95 degrees, daytime with another dragging ships anchor chains round the barracks: chain links as thick as your forearm. I saw three guys go nuts, put in straight jackets. If whole company was lousy, round and round, lifting those wood M1 rifles across your chest, up about your head, back down & up again. By end of 9 weeks, nothing alarmed you, no matter how much they screamed at you, come up behind you to startle you. I was 5'10" & 195 lbs of flab at start and 145 lbs upon graduation. Changed me tremendously. USCG is a great way for young men out of high school, with nothing to do.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'll be heading to bootcamp with the CSPI - SLRP program this summer. Is the water cold when you're in the pool training? Do you get to use phones/computers on days off? How strict do you think we should keep our work-outs or diets in order to prepare for bootcamp?

LoL. I still can't go to Cape May and enjoy myself. O131 !! It was changed a ton since my old days. Less mean now. They destroyed us mentally. Less of that now. The things they said then would get them court martial now. Fun? LoL. NO. As I said I can't go on base to visit and not feel nervous. I loved my time. Coastie forever. Wish I stayed in longer. Career even. Got out to be a cop... HUGE mistake !!!! Stay in !!! It's the best job I had to date. Semper Paratus....

@@jamesschultz I just loved the Coast Guard more. It's a great place to work. 20 years into my law enforcement career I would say the culture has changed and well not for the better. Too much media and Politics attacking your profession is a tough pill to swallow. You don't go in looking for thanks or acknowledgement but, to be hated for risking your life to make others safe? Just not why I became an Officer. I don't see this "attack" on police ending anytime soon. I wish you best of luck and I would say hang in there the job used to be a calling... Perhaps you are hearing that calling, and you maybe one of those that change the world. I hope you are. We need more young people willing to battle the lies and attacks to bring back that place of respect the profession deserves. Semper Paratus no matter where you are needed !!!

You can use your cellphone a couple times in boot camp.

Dream sheets typically have 3 top choices and you have a tiny box to explain where and why. It’s not always guaranteed but I explained anywhere on the west coast preferably California and got Eureka, California. Figured that out about halfway through training from the emails mentioned previously LOL

It depends how far back you get reverted. Typically it's a week, but if they decide you need more time they could revert you multiple weeks.
